News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Ask the Flying Monkey! (June 24, 2009)

Television’s past gay teens include characters in the TV movies The Price of Love (1995) and Doing Time on Maple Drive (1992), and supporting characters on the TV shows My So-Called Life, Desperate Housewives, Dawson’s Creek, The O.C., and the soap opera One Life to Live (where the gay teen was played by none other than Ryan Phillippe).

There have even been a few (likely) gay pre-teens, on the short-lived Oliver Beene and a couple of times on Will & Grace, as in a 2005 episode when Jack helps Will’s gay-seeming 10-year-old nephew put on a Christmas show.

Oh, and The Sarah Connor Chronicle’s Thomas Dekker once played a gay pre-teen. No, not on Heroes (where his teen character was de-gayed amid much controversy), but on an episode of Grosse Point, a 2000 sitcom on WB:

Q: I am a big fan of Ivri Lider and I love listening to his songs in Hebrew, although I can´t understand a word of it. My question: Are there any other out, non-English speaking musicians in the world? Moltes gràcies el mico volador! -- Johan, Barcelona, Spain

A: Plenty – for example, Spain’s José Galisteo, Iceland’s Jónsi Pór Birgisson, and Sweden’s Andreas Lundstedt. But like Ivri, most also sing in English.
