Ask the Flying Monkey! (June 24, 2009)Q: Can you name a mainstream action or science fiction movie where San Francisco’s Castro District is depicted in any way? – Emory
San Francisco's Castro District A: They have to be action or science fiction? The truth is, despite the fact that countless movies have been set in San Francisco – everything from The Maltese Falcon (1941) to The Princess Diaries (2001) – other than last year’s Milk, few movies of any kind have been filmed in the Castro, probably because it was too “working class” before the 1970s, and too “gay” afterward. But plenty of movies have been filmed in the neighboring Mission District, including 48 Hrs. (1982), Fearless (1993), Clint Eastwood’s The Enforcer (1976), Morgan Freeman’s High Crimes (2002), Steve McQueen’s Bullitt (1968), and, of course, Vertigo (1958). And can I just say? If I’m ever on a quiz show (or confronted by a riddle-asking Sphinx), there damn well better be a category called “incredibly obscure gay media trivia”! Q: In your April 14 "Ask the Flying Monkey," you discussed whether or not the two men in a Progressive insurance ad were meant to be a couple. In this Slate article , Progressive's chief marketing officer addresses this rumor and says, "the ad was not written specifically to be gay. But if people interpret it that way, it's fine with us." So there's your answer. – Thomasima, Alabama A: Good to know. Thanks.
A recent Progressive Insurance ad Q: Oh wise and winged simian, I recently saw a local theater production of Zanna, Don't. Now before I get crucified by the theater cognoscenti in your vast reading audience, let me add that I know the show is a complete cotton-candy confection. But I was wondering if you knew if there were any plans to turn this show into a film. – Brian, North Hollywood, CA A: You have nothing to apologize for here! I wish we could banish forever the idea that “serious” books and movies and plays are somehow more “important” and worthy of respect than “funny” or Just Damn Enjoyable ones. My favorite plays of all time are The Glass Menagerie, Quills, Angels in America, and … When Pigs Fly and Avenue Q, the latter two among the most enjoyable experiences of my life, theatrical or not. But I could find no plans to turn this campy cult hit into a movie, and the rights-holders never got back to me with the response. Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! Anton Yelchin as Chekov
I was excited to see Anton Yelchin at the top of the page when I visited a few minutes ago. I've admired him for awhile, but I gathered he was straight awhile back. I don't know anything about the original series, but while Yelchin doesn't look like the old Chekov, I have to say he was my favorite character in the movie.
Anyway, I thought the question was going to be whether or not the character was gay. I'd like to see a gay character on the Enterprise in the sequel, and seeing as Sulu would be too wink-wink-nudge for me, I'd like for it to be Chekov, or maybe Scotty. All the others were shown to be straight in the first film.
Gay people aren't allowed in space.
It's actually more of a franchise issue
Wouldn't want Playmates caught up in the culture war.
That said, is Trek just going to bring in/reveal gay characters when it's 'safe' to do so or simply reveal there was a Castro planet all along?
What would you have them do...?

Wow...
Pavel Andreievich Chekov, Sir
From IMDB:
*Yelchin's parents are both former Russian figure-skaters and now coach or choreograph skaters in the US. (He has the look of a figure skater come to think of it.)
*He likes reading and chess and playing piano.
*Both he and Walter Koenig (Original Chekov) are Jewish as well as originally from Russia.
Between the reading/chess/piano combo and the Figure Skater parents this boy SHOULD be gay! I can only dream...
I adored Anton Yelchin as Chekov
Yelchin was just so cute
Xana maybe?
I have heard that there are plans to take XANA DON'T on tour so they may be looking to go the indie route for financing. Somehow Naked Boys Singng did it.
I am more excited by the news that Cher is returning to the screen in BURLESQUE, a musical, with Christina Aquilera and directed and co-written by out actor/director Steve Antin. A better choice than a TV version of MAME.
That's all I am saying...
INSIDEGUY
Steve Antin's directing and co-scripting?!?!!!
In the marvelous biography od David Geffen, The Operator, there's a picture of Geffen Cher and Steve Antin taken at Arena. Geffen is chatting with Cher and has his arm around Steve -- who's staring right at the camera with the most incredible "Look what I'VE got!" expression on his face. Their relationship was, to put it mildly, tumultuous.
Nice that he and Cher are still pals, but then that's Cher all over.
Oh Brent
How can you leave out this character. There was even an interview with the actor here on this very site.

And Hongkong singer/actor Leslie Cheung(R.I.P.),who was gay and had a very stable relationship. He was also mentioned several times here on AE before.

Don't feed the Monkey
Or at least, don't feed him any of the candy I may want. I've always been accused of being a chocoholic, but the reality is that my heart belongs to Willy Wonka, with Nerds, Gobstoppers, Laffy Taffy, Runts, etc. Since I recently quit smoking, my desk looks like a dentist's nightmare, with a bag of Wonka Mix-ups, LifeSaver Gummies, Strawberry Milkshake Whoppers (these things are truly heaven), and the pound of Twizzlers I'm eating each day. So if the Monkey notices a sugar shortage in the Northwest, it's because it's all being shipped here.
Concerning some gay SF/fantasy - while it's primarily straight, all the Southern Vampire books that True Blood is based on have gay representation tossed in fairly organically. I've noticed gay humans, vampires, faeries, and wereanimals scattered in the books, including her latest Dead & Gone. These books are what I tend to call "beach books" because one good day in the sunshine, and I can finish them off. I hate to follow the pack and read something popular, but I've found Charlaine Harris to be a fun, engaging author.
Galisteo
As i know, Jose Galisteo is not out of the closet. Yes he is gay, i know it even two weeks before he even reach the top 16 of operación triunfo. It was some kind of controversial, because he had a lot of gay internet profiles. But maybe because he is such a hottie (he is the hottest guy of all editions of OT) he decide to stay in the closet.
Ot 5 was a weird edition, 3 of the male contestands are gay, but only one came out. Jose always give neutral answers, he never confirm but he never denied. Dani (when both were in the show were rumours about them being together) did the same path, even when he makes a very controversial video for his first single, when he kissed a man and a woman.
The last two editions were different, and we have openly gay contestants
Gay teens
Well, Hollywood definitely likes coming out stories...
... and more and more teens are coming out. Hollywood likes to thinks it's topical and with-it.
On a more cynical note, I think the focus on teen coming out stories (while important) means producers don't have to depict or even discuss actual gay sex. The focus can be on the emotional journey of the coming out process (which appearantly only involves flirting and maybe a kiss that goes awry). And when the person coming out is a teen (ie. under 18), there's no need to discuss sex unless it involves unplanned pregnancy.
No, that definitely seems
No, that definitely seems to be the case. Off the top of my head, I can only think of that there was a rather adorable couple of elderly lesbians in the Doctor Who episode "Gridlock" in the 50+ range, but 20-40's is a little more prominent, but teens are the most common.
i like him too...
Ivri Lider-i like him too after i heard he sing the song "The Man I Love"for movie "Bubble".but i can't buy his cd here.(i just watch his video on youtube.)
I'm a HUGE Ivri Lider fan
You can get his music on iTunes and also at israelimusic.com, if you can access either of those.

THANKS...
gay teens
Oh, don't forget the six-part BBC series "Beautiful People" when talking about programming focused on gay teens. I just started watching the show, which is, I believe, the gayest series I've ever seen---and it's simply hilarious as well. I'm very pleased that they're shooting a second season...
I'm like a superhero, with no powers or motivation...
Ivri Rocks!

Summer Reading
I'm currently reading The Family Man by Elinor Lipman, and I would definitely recommend it! The main character is a gay man in his 50s or 60s who reconnects with his step-daughter from an ill-advised marriage 25 years prior. It's very much a comedy of manners kind of thing, a bunch of colorful characters and has a cute gay romance subplot. It also, (IMHO) does a really wonderful job of expressing some heavier topics, like coming out to a parent and a gay man's desire for a family, with humor and sensitivity. I haven't gotten to the end yet, but I've completely enjoyed the ride thus far.

What's with the random love
Sweden
I don't know but being Swedish, I think its pretty sweet.
"To make a bad day worse, spend it wishing for the impossible." - Calvin of Calvin and Hobbes
Sweden deserves love
Stockholm has to be one of the best places I've ever been. Plus, the Swedes really do all look like Abercrombie models and because that is the norm there none of them seem to have attitude because of it. I can't even begin to describe how out of sorts I felt in Lino one night with all these men who in the U.S. would probably never even make eye contact with me being very, very friendly.
Plus the wonderful folks in the Riksdag just legalized same-sex marriage.
All gays should make a pilgrimage to Stockholm at least once.
(I'm Swedish (not by
(I'm Swedish (not by birth). It was just funny)
Oh yeah, the Swedes are "unusually" attractive. My straight European and American friends all remarked on how hot all of our girls were when they came over one summer and I was, like, "You call that hot? Meh." (the girls they were swooning over were "mediocre" to us who've lived here for a long time). :D
The wonderful people in the Riksdag, all except the (Christian) Kristdemokraterna. While our wingnuts are less nutty, they're still wingnuts.
Swedes
To quote from Jon Stewart's book America, in an end section discussing the rest of the world (in this case Scandinavia):
"This dilemma is perhaps most thoroughly manifested in Scandinavia's bikini teams, which consistently rank among the world's hottest, even though the region's beaches suck."
As for the Christian Democrats, yes you have wingnuts. But since they have their own party, as does virtually every other ideological group imaginable, they amount to how many seats in the Riksdag? There are a lot of times I wish the U.S. had more diverse parties instead of the two schizophrenic can't decide if they're right, left or center messes we've got here.
Just for a laugh
The best thing about the
The best thing about the Christian Democrats is that the people are getting sick of them. According to most polls, they're probably going to get voted out of the Riksdag in the next election the last time I checked (I'm a bit behind on the polls, but still) (Let's ignore the fact that The Swedish Democrats might make it into the Riksdag)!
And if anyone were to spew any of the BS the wingsnuts of America spew in Swedish newspapers or on Swedish TV, they'd be laughed out of town. I mean, just take gay marriage. It was such a non-issue among us Swedes that we saw virtually zero public debate among the top politicians on the issue and, from what I can tell, the Swedish Democrats didn't even dare to argue against it on religious grounds.
That's right, Sweden's so darn secular the religious right doesn't dare to use "The Jesus Card"!
So am I and so do I :D.
