Ask the Flying Monkey (November 11, 2008)Q: What is John Cameron Mitchell doing with his life these days? – Megan, New York, NY A: Ah, Hedwig and the Angry Inch! The Monkey can’t praise Mitchell’s landmark transgender rock musical highly enough (the movie version was good, but the stage version was even better).
John Cameron Mitchell in Hedwig The Monkey was less taken with the experimental, sexually explicit Shortbus (2006), though it wasn’t just the sex romp some people made it out to be.
Mitchell (left) Mitchell tells the Monkey that he’s currently holed up in Puerto Rico. He’s working on different projects, but isn’t ready to announce anything just yet. Q: November is National Novel Writing Month, an all-out, wild ride frenzy to write a 50,000-word novel in thirty days before the end of the month. This is the third time I'm participating. In light of the recent poll of the fifty best gay books, perhaps NaNoWriMo will inspire some of us to begin writing the next wave of the world's fifty best gay books. I for one know it'd be awesome if I were not the only AfterElton.com-er to one day make the list here because of NaNoWriMo. – Amansviri, North Carolina
A: You’ve already written two and a half novels at age 19 (which is listed in your profile — no, the Monkey is not stalking you)? The Monkey is impressed. The Monkey believes that just finishing a novel is a great achievement. And, in fact, last year over a hundred thousand writers participated in National Novel Writing Month — but only 15,000 actually finished. The Monkey has actually known quite a few writers who did participate, then went on to sell the resulting book to a publisher. The key to writing a good book? In the Monkey’s opinion, it’s not to write what you think will sell or be a “better” version of something that’s already out there. Instead, write the book that you’d love to read but never have — the story that only you can tell. But if anyone is planning on participating this year, they better get moving — the contest started eleven days ago! Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey!

Really, the two characters show a need for each other that most definitely goes beyond the parameters of a typical, or even a close friendship. Sadly, the creators have also pretty much stated that this will probably come to nothing beyond what it is now. "You’ve already writtenSubmitted by

And as soon as one of them gets published, I want my first interview to be no other place than here. Then you can give my book good reviews, and I can promote your books in other interviews, and we'll all celebrate the profits together. Well, it sounds good to me, at least. And you give great writing advice, too. Unfortunately, with how vocal my characters can become, unless it's the story THEY want, I don't get much writing done at all. Then again, what they want is usually what I want--even when they want something that's not exactly what I want--so I suppose it all still applies in the end. Vale v'shalom. But i have to admit i did really like the Turk/JD relationship, but aside fromt hat I also love that they made JD out to be gay, but not in a "he's so gay eww" kind of way just in that, he's JD and we all think he's kinda gay!
I do kinda wish we had a xena-esc relationship to follow, but then again the problem with the xena/gabby relationship was that we all knew but it wasn't really shown (as far as I can remember, but I did miss loads of the final season) and the one time i do remember them actually kissing it was when Xena was inside Bruce Cambell, (not the normal thing to write of a morning!!) Subtexty Gay CouplesSubmitted by
Dave Doty (5119 points) (1116 posts) on Tue, 2008-11-11 06:15.If we did have a couple like that, wouldn't everyone just come out of the woodwork complaining about "coded" gay characters?
That said, they sometimes seem to be going that way with Lenny and Karl on The Simpsons, but other times totally contradict that.
In comics, Apollo and Midnighter were a subtexted gay couple for a long time, until Ellis finally made it explicit in one of his last issues before he left The Authority. Admittedly, it was a very heavy, hard to miss subtext.
I remain convinced that Jim and Plato had sex in Rebel Without a Cause. I can point to the specific scene cutaway I think led to it, even. (Jim goes into the school bathroom. Plato quickly looks around, as if to see if anyone is around, then follows him in.) In that instance, the subtext completely transforms the interpretation of everything that happens in the film.
And, of course, there's Brick and whatsisname from cat on a Hot Tin Roof. And, well, every character in every Tennessee Williams play, ever.

Fuego (255 points) (59 posts) on Tue, 2008-11-11 08:00.“It began as a friendship, became more intimate and moved to a physical level but Dali found it difficult and couldn't carry on. He said they tried to have sex but it hurt, so they couldn't consummate the relationship.” The Monkey isn’t sure what that means, but, um, okay, whatever. What the filmmaker means by this is that even though, in real life, Salvador Dali and Federico Garcia Lorca were madly in love with each other, intellectual soul mates of sorts, they couldn't have sex. They tried a few times, but apparently it was physically painful for both of them. Animosity eventually began to grow between them. My favorite quote by Dali about the relationship is this: "He was homosexual, as everybody knows, and he tried twice to screw me. I was repulsed, of course, because I am not a homosexual, and besides, it hurt. But I was quite flattered vis a vis prestige. I figured he was a great poet, so I owed him a piece of the Divine Dali's *beep*" Absolutely ridiculous, right? He was "repulsed," but they tried it twice? He wanted nothing to do with it, but he felt like he owed him "a piece of the Divine Dali *beep*"? It cancels itself out. As for the hype around Pattinson, I honestly do believe this man will be a star, unlike Ben Barnes. Ask Jerri (96 points) (20 posts) on Tue, 2008-11-11 09:38.I, too, was disheartened to discover that Smith didn't actually kiss his male co-star but got as close as he possibly could without doing so (and proudly proclaimed that fact in an interview many years ago.) That said, everyone grows, especially actors (isn't that what they do?) He has been open about not being a great actor and simply working very hard to get it right. Most importantly (and oh, that I could find a clip!), he was on Oprah a few years back (with Jada), and Oprah asked him if he had any career regrets and he said that he regretted not kissing the guy in "Six Degrees" because (I believe) he owed it to the character. And c'mon, at that time, he was a twenty-something rapper who had only recently started work on a "gem" called "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air" and was getting acting advice from a freakin' Oscar winner (who looked like Denzel Washington!) I'd listen too.

So i don't really think he's a homopobe, he was young and given bad advise. WHat we need to remember is that it was his career that he thought he was protecting. nordic balance (not verified) on Wed, 2008-11-12 15:02.QUOTE "The black community is about as homophobic as you can get. " As has been articulated over and over on this website and other, the 70% of African American people who voted for prop 8 in California DOES NOT represent All African Americans nor does it represent All African Americans in California. 70% of those African American who Voted (predominantly women who are predominantly CHRISTIAN) are the folks you're talking about. Only 6% of the overall California population. YES, It is relevant to point this out because CHRISTIANITY is the determining factor here, not race or ethnicity. There is no BLACK or African American genetic predisposition to be homophobic, there is no community ethic for Black or African American folks to be homophobic. Christian Black and African American folks are No More or Less homophobic than Christian folks of any other race or ethnicity. The problem is that there is such a small numbe of Black/African American folks in the state of California that it's easy to quantify them. The percentage of Whites and Lations overall in California who voted for Prop 8 is what carried the day. I would hate to judge a "COMMUNITY" based upon what such a tiny number did or didn't do. You could accurately say that those women who voted in favor of prop 8 are homophobic but you can just extend that to the ENTIRE Black Community. Again, my point is that CHRISTIANITY, not RACE or ETHNICITY is what the 70% represents. I think it's important NOT to make blanket statements like ""The black community is about as homophobic as you can get. " when not only is that not true, but it assumes that there are NO African American or Black Progressives or Gay Activists or Gay Allies. It's just not a useful or factual statement to make.

In the mean time, here's a little treat: He looked at his hands and tried to steady them, but to no avail. Defending Ben BarnesSubmitted by
Darrien (3325 points) (704 posts) on Tue, 2008-11-11 15:07.Although there might have been a lot of hype around Ben Barnes, he's spoken in the past about his desire to be an actor first. As a very general rule, young British actors have that drama-school education that says they have to prove their acting prowess and experience before they'll be accepted as an equal by other actors. Look at Kate Winslet - immediately after Titanic she avoided Hollywood movies and instead went for small-scale, interesting acting challenges in movies that a lot of people won't have seen. Off hand, the only young Brit I can think of who enthusiastically embraced Hollywood without serving time in the indie and stage trenches is Orlando Bloom - and even he took to the West End stage earlier this year in a relatively small role to prove that he deserves to be thought of as an actor rather than a 'star'.

Yes, NOES 2: FREDDY'S REVENGE star Mark Patten is Gay. He's not acting any more. NOES 2 beat HELLBENT to the "First Gay Horror Movie" by 21 years- it's *so* homoerotic. Sample dialogue:
