Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (January 15, 2010)

HEY,AT LEAST IT BEATS THE SNOWPOCALYPSE!
Hello, all! I'm here in Southern California where it's beautiful and sunny outside! (Hi, Dennis, Ed and Snicks! How goes the Snowpocalypse?) At least I hear it's beautiful outside. I don't know for sure as I'm actually stuck inside the hotel scuttling from ballroom to ballroom like Gollum (and looking about as pasty). But instead of my "precious" being a golden ring, I'm after news about any gay/bi characters and other tidbits you might be interested in.

For instance, can you believe ****** was seen at a party **** with ***** ***** and ***** and they were all ******. I know! Shocking!

Show me the gay character! I want my gay character!

I've been here a week so far and have five more days to serve on my sentence before I'm released back into Brent's protective custody. So what are my thoughts this far? Funny you should ask!

HITTING ALL THE RIGHT NOTES ... MOSTLY!
Glee was first introduced to critics two TCAs ago and after that first panel, which featured most of the cast, I went up and introduced myself to a couple of young actors no one had yet heard of named Chris Colfer and Kevin McHale. The duo were standing there by themselves taking in all the craziness of their first TCA while the the other journalists went after Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison and some of the other more well-known cast.

Flash forward almost exactly twelve months and not only is Glee a huge hit, but Kevin, and especially Chris, now have no trouble attracting the attention of journalists. Indeed, at the FOX TCA party on Monday night, I had to wait a solid thirty minutes for Chris to finish his television interviews and then run the gauntlet of print reporters before I got to chat with him.

Of course, he liked chatting with me best.

Non divas Chris Colfer and, Kevin McHale

So has all of this attention gone to Chris and Kevin's heads? Are they now celebs with a capital "C"? Is Chris channeling Kurt's inner diva?

Not in the least. Both guys are as down to earth as ever and so appreciative of how things have changed for them in the past year. Indeed, Chris was sweet and adorable as I teased him about the best the part of the year being his having won our Gay of the Week crown just like he told me he wanted to back at the first TCA. "Oh that's the highlight absolutely," he said laughing.

Unfortunately, such humbleness isn't true of all the cast. After doing the red carpet, one young performer I shan't name, told me they couldn't answer any questions because they were sick and rushing home. What should I see an hour later but said performer sitting on a couch texting away with a plate full of food in front of them. Newsflash, Young Hollywood, you may have a hit show now, but it's an ensemble and you aint' the star. Let's check back in five years to see how many folks remember your name.

It's not just actors who can be a little, um, full of themselves. Some publicists also have a very inflated sense of self. When I pointed out one Glee cast member to another journalist who wanted to interview them, their publicist got all up in my face because I dared to actually "point" at their client.

Um, hello? Super crowded, super noisy party where hand gestures pretty efficient way to communicate. And while I really like your client, they aren't so special they manage to outshine the dozens of folks around them like a beacon of uniqueness.

That being said, one of the nicest surprises about Hollywood has been the fact that most actors (and even most publicists) are incredibly down to earth and nice.
