Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (February 06, 2009)
FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE!
A couple of movies are opening this week that have a bit of gay appeal. He's Just Not That Into You stars (among many others) Drew Barrymore, in what's supposed to be her finest performance since Doppelganger. Her character is an ad buyer for a gay newspaper, and is surrounded by gay friends played by Wilson Cruz, Leo Nam, and Rod Keller.
Drew and her gaggle of gays Also opening this week is the telekinetic actioner Push, which looks a little like last year's dud Jumper. So what does it have to recommend it? Chris Evans!
Push it. Push it good. P-Push it real good. (my apologies to Salt-N-Pepa) On the little screen there are new episodes of Ugly Betty (enjoy it while it lasts), Desperate Housewives and Brothers & Sisters this week. Best of all, B&S even features the appearance of Saul's boyfriend played by John Glover. And word comes from on high (namely, Michael) that starting with this week's Brothers & Sisters, we're only going to be recapping the episodes that have enough Kevin and Scotty to warrant a full recap. Otherwise, check back on Sunday night for Steven Frank's shorter but no less hilarious IMHO recap of all the Walker shenanigans! I can't say I blame Steven at all for doing shorter recaps when necessary. Imagine having to sit down to recap only to find out it's a ... Kitty episode. (Shudder). Out on DVD this week is the 2-disc director's edition of Yentl (with commentary by the director herself, Barbra Streisand). Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist has some interesting gay supporting characters, and Zach and Mirni Make a Porno has Justin Long as a gay porn star, and Jason Mewes doing the full Jay.Also out after a very successful theatrical run is Noah's Arc: Jumping The Broom, the feature version of the groundbreaking Logo show.
And finally, let's bring it back to the sports theme with these sweet pics of athletes embracing.
Well, that's about it. While the jugglers and knife-throwers were entertaining Michael, he drank some grog and ate a mutton leg, and has drifted off into nappy-land. Now's my chance to make a run for it!
Wish me luck, and please, have the BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER! Submitted by on Thu, 2009-02-05 20:53. |

Err...
Just curious if there's going to be any more coverage of RuPaul's Drag Race? I've been looking for a recap, but haven't seen anything yet?
On a side-note, only one person comes to mind when I think about why I watch tennis with sucj high enthusiasm... Serena Williams! I don't know about y'all, but I love her if not for the mere fact that she's a strong black diva with one of the craziest fashion sense ever! Oh, and she wins championships too!
Good job!
Atlanta Braves
I'm a die-hard Braves fan. Have been since I was a young sprig growing up in Georgia. So, you can imagine my utter disappointment when the Rocker & Smoltz incidents occurred. Though hardly surprising.
Unfortunately, as much of a fan as I am of the team (and game), the Braves, by way of location, also have the most Deep South fanbase of all the MLB teams. Meaning that they have the most, um, how do I say this political correctly...they have the most "redneck" opinions at times (oh well, I tried). At least, that's my experience, right or wrong.
I subscribe to a Braves fansite, and have gotten myself embroiled in several gay-themed threads on the board. (Yes, I'm out on the board, and try my darnedest to represent, ya'll. But I'm a lone voice talking over all the burps & beer cans.) Don't get me wrong, there are some VERY cool and enlightened posters there (mostly from the North or West Coast areas, I have to admit), but a great number speak openly of their distaste for gays, often removing their internal filter for such a debate. Though they often spew their vitriol quite eloquently. Many are highly educated even, but I guess just the convictions they've grown up with simply cannot allow them to compromise their beliefs with their education. It's frustratingly sad for me.
I will say this. From just a couple years ago, many MANY more of the posters now believe in allowing gay civil unions. Even if they are still staunchly against gay marriage. That's quite the step forward for that fanbase, trust me (small sample size that it is).
VL
I disagree with your down-arrow for Verbotene Liebe (Forbidden Love, for you english-only boys).
This week has had either Olli or Christian interacting with other characters on the show. As the show gets ready to ramp up a story for Olli in March, it shows that Olli & Christian aren't just important only to their own relationship. They are woven into the fabric of the show.
That Olli refers to Carla by her first name (isn't she a baroness?) is important (he's only a mere queer bartender, after all). He's also involved to a degree with Carla's flirtation with his gay lover's gay cousin Stella. I know this isn't AfterEllen, but Carla's champagne with the random lesbian before Stella's surprise arrival, and an unexpected later kiss between the women ... and the upcoming direction of Stella's romantic attentions (SPOILER...MARCH) was good for the community, though not exclusively for the boys.
VL had a very good gay week. I respectfully disagree. :)
Olli, lesbian match maker
Olli, lesbian match maker and gossip hound extraordinaire was pretty funny. But I guess that's Olli for you, he makes even those small scenes pretty fun.
I do think that the perception can be a bit diluted sometimes because Nanna waits for a few episodes to accumulate and only then does the translation. That said, if it remember correctly, the day Olli came back (Tuesday) that really was their only apperance that week. They were on three times the next week mostly in supporting roles (Olli asking Stella about her kiss with Carla, Christian discussing with Gregor whether Gregor was too mean to his magical helicopter girl).
It guess it all depends on how one defines at the thick of things. Both Stella/Carla and Gregor/Luise are going to be THE big deal stories (and are already are in screentime alone) in the near future.
Sandra Lee
Not that it has anything to do with the 'mos.... NSFW!
But did anyone else hear Christian Bale's crazy 4 minute 35-time f word tirade this week??
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLXVuy0h29c (rated R for vulgarity!)
Or better yet, the wicked "Bale Out" remix that surfaced within days... it's actually a sweet song to dance to :D

I dislike actors who are jerks to the GLBT community, but I also dislike actors who are jerks in general...
Jumper was a dud?
I swear to God, hand on heart, that no less than 11 completely different people have told me that Jumper was an amazing film that would easily find itself into their Top 10 (though not in so many words). Granted, I've never seen it myself but I can't help but think that all those people could be wrong. Especially considering 3 of those people are the most intelligent people I know.
What did other people think?
Jumper was good
Most of my friends liked the movie and so do I. I thought the effects and story were good. Yes Hayden Christensen isnt the best of actors, but he wasnt bad. The girlfriend should've been different though.
However Push does look like an awesome movie so I'm seeing it this weekend.
Jumper trailer was amazing
Based on just the trailer, Jumper looked amazing. Sadly, the actual movie, when viewed in its entirety, was a bit of a dud.
I was anticipating the film but came away very disappointed. I thought the storyline was a complete mess. The effects were certainly cool, hence their ability to come up with an effective 2 minute promo clip. Still, you might find it entertaining if you approach it with lowered expectations.
Also out on DVD this week . . .
Rent - Live on Broadway, The Final performance was released this week.
Nicely done...
Well done Snicks, they should let you out of the dungeon more often - and I'm sure Michael wouldn't mind attending more snowy hot tub sessions with Jo to make it happen.
Tim Hardaway in still in Miami - he owns a car wash. I try not to be too amused by that. When he came into our store needing to replace a car stereo someone had ripped off I made sure to be as unhelpful as possible once someone told me who he was. I can't help but be amused that after his rant, he's hands on running a car wash to make ends meet these days. And a cheap b*astard too.
Jumper was awful. I bought the BluRay thinking it would have cool special effects, but it was just terrible. Hayden is adorable, but he can't act his way out of a wet paper bag. Push has to be better, since Chris Evans in anything is just better by default.
In Hardaway's defense, he

Great column!
I stopped reading on page 5
No, but, amazingly I really enjoyed it!
And I loathe sports! Very entertaining, Snicks!
Of course, the best part was seeing crush-worthy Eric William Morris with smirky Billy Magnussen on page 9!
Please don't stop recapping
When Brock Lesner was a kid..
Fantastic Column
Amazing job!
What sport do I have to play, now, Dad?
I was never really into sports--wait, does tetherball count?--but I did start to enjoy tennis. I took a class in college, and I watch tennis on TV every now and then. I played baseball and basketball in my fourth, fifth, and sixth grades, but we don't need to talk about that...
Regarding Sandra Lee, I'm not a huge fan. I don't drink alcohol, and it seems as if she has it with or adds it to everything she prepares. "I'm just having a bacon cheeseburger and some wine tonight." "I think I'll spruce up this green salad with a little vodka dressing." "What this hot chocolate needs is a capful of Kahlua!" It's funny 'cause it's sad.
Mitcham
Soccer stories
SNICKS
I think you misunderstand!
Snicks is hardly a callow youth...I'll use the ellipses here...I think he was in the Army in Korea? ...Certainly before "Don't ask, don't tell"...I would say perhaps before they got rid of the draft?...only because there were far more opportunities of sex in the military at that time period...but I might be wrong.
But you are right he sure is cute, both physically and personality-wise (does anyone ever use that type of phrase anymore?)
Wonderful column
Wonderful column snicks. Congratulations, I loved it!!
Loved the section on homophobic sports stars and where they are they now. I didn't know that Hardway was running a car wash as his career. And I find it so sad about Mitcham and the lack of sponsors because he is out and proud. You can see why so many gay sports personalities prefer to just stay in the closet. Lets hope in the near future being 'out' won't matter in the least.
I have to respectfully disagree with you regarding the down arrow for my beloved couple Olli and Christian. Both were featured three times this week and in one of the episodes together at Charlie's resturant. Plus, it looks like they will be involved in future storylines. Sadly not a major one for them just yet, more supporting for Gregor/Louise and Carla/Stella.
rugby union?
the south african in me is outraged at you having forgotten rugby union on your sport chart thing haha
