Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (May 29, 2009)
DOES HE REALLY NEED TO SAY IT? A lot of folks were disappointed last week when Adam didn't rush right out after losing to Kris Allen and tell the world he's a big old 'mo. Personally, I think that would've been crappy to do to Kris as that would've been all everyone talked about. Whether you think Kris deserved to win or not (and most of you definitely don't!), he did win and deserves his moment in the sun. Besides, it's not as if Adam hasn't had a ton of press anyway and won't be around a lot longer. After a number of interviews this week where Adam said he thinks all the speculation about his sexuality keeps things interesting, he did finally say that the "elephant in the room is pink", which seems a pretty clear statement about his sexuality.
Yet, as some readers have pointed it out, it's almost as if Adam is forbidden to use the word "gay." So should Adam just be completely upfront about the issue when talking with the traditional media (and, no, what his status is or comments are on Friendster doesn't count) or is his roundabout "pink elephant" approach completely fine? I'm of mixed minds. On one hand, by seeming to dance around the topic, he is sending a message that there is something risky or off-putting in being public about his gayness. And if he does have a serious boyfriend, it seems odd that he was never mentioned on Idol where we heard and saw plenty about Allen and Gokey's private lives. On the other hand, Adam is a pop singer. He hasn't signed up to lead a movement. Nor has he denied he's gay, which would really be off-putting. But on the other other hand (I've got three. Call it a gift! Or a delusion) Adam is able to be who is as a gay man precisely because so many others have been open. Face it, as Fox proved with So You Think You Can Dance, the world still isn't exactly 100% accepting of gay men. But now it's your turn to have your say. What do you think?
And speaking of polls and Adam, here are the results of last week's question about who should've won and why Adam lost.
Can't say I disagree with these results. I definitely think it was a combination of factors as well. Editor's note: Just as I was about to publish the column, AfterElton.com reader Ed sent me this link where American Idol Kara DioGuardi said during an interview set to run tomorrow on The View that she doesn't think Adam was ever "in."
