Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (June 19, 2009)

WHO IS RIK MAKAREM AND WHY ARE JOHN BARROWMAN AND RUSSEL T DAVIES ALREADY FIGHTING OVER HIM? AND HOW DO I GET IN ON THE ACTION?
On Wednesday, I had the unexpected pleasure of getting to interview John Barrowman about the upcoming five episode Torchwood miniseries Children of Earth debuting next month on BBC America. While I won't be publishing the whole interview until next month (sorry!), I will mention a couple of items John and I discussed.

First off, I think John has to be my favorite person to interview which is why he is our first threepeat interview subject. (Naturally, when I told him that, he had to make a joke about threeways!). He's funny, self-effacing and, unlike some stars, utterly appreciative of how Torchwood and its fans have dramatically changed his life for the better.

John was actually at home gardening while we talked (I could hear his dogs barking in the background) and one of the things I asked him about was Rik Makarem, who plays Dr. Rupesh Patanjali in the upcoming series.

AfterElton.com: I was looking at some publicity stills from the show and I have to ask who the heck is Rik Makarem and how did his character, Doctor...
John Barrowman: I can't tell you, and his name on the show is Doctor Rupesh Patanjali, and Russell and I are already fighting over him.

John and Russell are fighting over moi? Hmm....

AE: I was just going to say, how does that character not come between Captain Jack and Ianto at some point?
JB: You'll just have to watch. Rupesh is ... I really can't tell you anymore than that, but you're just going to have to watch. There's a bit of flirtation going on, but I know Rik outside of work, and again, Rik flirts like crazy with me, he's a tease — which I love. One of those guys, again, that [someone's sexuality] doesn't matter to him. He's a wonderful actor, and you'll like the character. There'll be surprises and shocks.

AE: I haven't heard anything about him, but man is he attractive. He's going to be very popular.
JB: Oh yes. And he's got a great body. Unbelievable.

While John wouldn't tell me anything more about Rik's role on TW, I poked around and learned Rik himself is a 27-year-old martial arts expert (that explains the rockin' bod!) and a well-known model who had never seen an episode of Doctor Who until David Tennant took over the part. 

Something tells me Rik is going to being a very big impression on Torchwood fans! BTW, Rik is single and I found nothing indicating he's gay or straight, so as of now, we're all in the running! On your mark, get set, go!

BTW, I promise the rest of John's interview is fun and interesting although I'm afraid there were no wardrobe malfunctions! Perhaps you can check out Comic Con in San Diego next month where John, David Tennant and Russel T Davies will be appearing on a panel. No telling what might pop up there!
