Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (June 19, 2009)

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS presents the 19th Annual Broadway Bares fundraiser at the Roseland in New York City Sunday nights and some tickets are still available. This has to be one of the most fun ways to raise money for a good cause and I encourage you to go if you can. Lord knows, I would if I could!

But don't despair if you can't! Just as we did last year, we'll have exclusive pics from the event right here Monday!

AfterElton.com reader Thomasina tipped me off to this FunnyorDie.com video with Will Arnett and Amy Poehler. It's cute, but not exactly the freshest thing in the world as the commenters at FOD so vigorously point out!

Just as I was finishing up this week's column, eagle-eyed AfterElton.com reader extraordinaire Ed K. sent me an email tipping off to this picture:

We've got pride! Yes, we do! We've got pride! How about you?

As far as I can tell, this is unintentionally so hilariously gay, but gay it is and just in time for Pride, too!

Ed found the pic on this site and apparently it's is an advert for a very rare collection of Green Lantern figures from the Darkest Night saga from Hal Jordan. No, you can't get them now; you'll have to wait until Comic Con next month in San Diego and even then, you'll have to jump through all sorts of hoops so you can buy them, store them on a shelf where you'll never let anyone ever touch them until you become senile, go into a nursing home and your loved ones — not knowing how extremely rare and valuable these gay Green Lanterns are — give them away to your next door neighbors who give them to their dog as a chew toy.

What can I say? Life's a bitch and then you die.

Last week I explained how folks could update their Latest Member Headlines (which tell what you're up to at the moment and show up on the front page of the site as one of the five most recent) but it turns out that it can be a bit tricky if you're doing it the first time.

To update your status just go to My Account, hover your cursor right next to your name (which should be to the right of your photo/avatar) and click. That should cause a box to pop up and voila! You can tell other AfterEltoners just what you're up to. If you still have trouble, just shoot me an email at editor@afterelton.com and we'll help you out ASAP!

Speaking of email and PMs, I just want to tell folks who do take the time to write with comments, suggestions, tips, etc., that we do read every single thing that comes through that box and make every effort to write back with an answer or just our thanks.

Unfortunately, some weeks we can't answer every email, but we certainly appreciate all of your input and hope you'll keep writing us!

And now I'll shut up so you can have the BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER!

Weeds & Nurse Jackie

Guillermo Diaz already signed on a new show so I wonder how big his part will be in this season of Weeds. I would love him to show up again at some point but based on what they showed so far (the character is in prison) I`m afraid they might kill him off. :(

Nurse Jackie is a pleasant surprise. I didn`t expect there would be TWO gay characters in the main cast. The upcoming lesbian stuff according to Afterellen is also a big plus. And quite a few hot guys of my taste. Yum! I wasn`t very into Peter Facinelli`s looks before, but on this show he`s super cute. Oh, and that "kiss each other" line really caught my off guard, I laughed so hard!

OMg its Peter

OMg its Peter Serofinowich!!! Funky Pete from Shaun otD and the voice of Darth Sidious? in StarWars and his show can be really funny. I think Sarah Alexander was

I think Sarah Alexander was in the US remake of Teachers, but neither would be that well known outside of BBC America.

Which is a pity, because they're both awesome. And that clip is even weirder if you know who they are, because as well as looking like Will and Amy, they also have pretty similar careers

Ed Kennedy's picture

Great actors, small places

I know I adored Sarah Alexander from Coupling, but then that was BBC America (and the box sets I own). She's got amazing comic timing.

I could have sworn last night when I was watching Royal Pains on USA (the show is just OK, sort of MacGuyver crossed with House crossed with Gossip Girl. But the mansion porn of the Hamptons houses is so worth the hour each week), that I saw Guillermo Diaz on the show, but the IMDB listings only have the main cast shown, so I can't be sure, and Diaz tends to look physically different to me depending on the role he's in, good or bad guy.

I gotta say, I don't miss not seeing the Gay Babies this week. Let them go enjoy their childhoods. Great column.

AddisonDewitt's picture

Apparently!

Sarah Alexander rocks. My favorite Coupling episode is Night Lines where she is freaking out about her preganancy and she calls Sally, he best friend, to calm her down... insanity ensues when all the characters (minus Jeff since he left in Season 4 boo!) end up on the line.

Guillermo Diaz on "Royal Pains"

Guillermo Diaz played a financially strapped dog walker who gets bitten by one of his charges, after Evan (cutie Paolo Constanzo) riles the mutt. Hank (even cuter Mark Feuerstein) treats him on the spot and advises him to go to a hospital.

The character's lot-his difficulty in paying medical bills-is put in contrast with Hank's other client in the episode, whose mother is almost ridiculously wealthy.

I think the episodes are rerun a couple times over the weekend and become available online on the Internet Movie Database afterward.

Merlin

I watched Merlin last year and have very mixed feelings on it, particularly because I really liked it most of the season, and then the last two or so episodes mucked things up so badly, screwing up an entire season of plotting so effectively, I don't even know if I'm interested in coming back for the next season. Also, the "subtext" is way overrated. Yes, I can kind of see what people are talking about, but Merlin and Arthur are rarely ever even in the same scene together, and the development of their sort-of friendship is so clunky and inorganic that when they go from hating each other to Arthur risking life and limb to save Merlin a few episodes later, I was like, "Really? He feels that strongly about his servant this soon?" Sorry, I really feel like the gay angle of this show is a bit grasping-at-straws. Yes, there's the element that Merlin is "closeted" with his magic, but on the other hand, almost every other person shown using magic besides him is basically evil or using it irresponsibly. So if you take magic as a literal parallel of gayness, you'll have just as much of a problem as if you take the vampires-as-gay metaphor in True Blood literally.

Yep, what he said. I take

Yep, what he said. I take issue with a series which seems to be saying it's ok to kill children if they might do something bad in 30 years's time, or whatever.

Also, any show which makes me hate Anthony Head must be intrinsically evil (as well as misogynistic for other reasons) - Basically King Uther and Gaius are like King Philip of Spain and Torquemada. I'm supposed to applaud what is, to all intents and purposes, genocide, here? It's even implied that Gaius, out of all the magic users, got to live because he led Uther to all the other wizards out there which . . . makes it SO MUCH WORSE! Dear Merlin, you are made of fail!

Oh, and what was your reaction when you found out what terrible no good horrible thing Nimue had done which made Uther persecute all the magic users? I was rendered speechless and my hate for the show increased exponentially! SO MUCH HATE!

I actually quite enjoyed it...

It's certainly not the best-written, -acted, -shot, -plotted, etc. shows, but I thought that sort of added to its camp value. It's hilariously bad, but it doesn't take itself too seriously. I thought the Hoyay was very enjoyable; even if it made no sense (literally every episode begins with Arthur & Merlin hating each other, one gets into trouble, the other risks his neck to save him, and they end having a grudging respect for each other that is magically wiped away next episode), some of it was so blatant I can't imagine the writers put it in unintentionally. As to the comments of the user above, I think maybe you misunderstood the message of the series-- Uther is categorically evil and intolerant, and as he is basically the villain of the piece, the show doesn't condone anything he does. We are meant to hate him and the program of genocide he is implementing, and "our heroes" work against him. Also, the little boy you mentioned is saved by the protagonists, none of whom decide he should die.

Yes, Uther is evil...

...but at the same time, everyone he accuses of using magic for evil or wrong, actually IS. The witch in the first episode, Nimueh, the Druids, etc. The show on the one hand implies that Uther is wrong to suppress magic, but on the other, all the magic people we see are either villains or misguided. And that little boy who is saved...He's Mordred and he's going to grow up to kill Arthur, as per the legends.

MASSIVE SPOILERS FOR MERLIN

I know who Mordred is, thank you very much, as I know more about Arthurian legend than the writers of this show. My point is that in a tv show where Arthur and Merlin are the same age, Uther brings up his son rather than fostering him, and Guinevere is the DAUGHTER of a BLACKSMITH and so doesn't have a chance in hell of marrying the King of England, what chance is there that Mordred, of all people, is going to follow any of the legends?

And all the magic users are evil is because the show makes them evil: as most of these are women, I jump to my own conclusions. Oh wait, I don't need to jump, I just need to take a small step and conclusions are there.

Let us see what great crime Nimue committed to make Uther decide to wipe out an entire class of people, children included (remember the horribly burned young man who saw his parents roasted as a kid?). Well, Arthur's Mom couldn't have kids and Uther went to Nimueh and said, fix that for me will ya? After warning him many many times that magic is not that easy and that there is a price to pay, eventually she gives in, and hey presto! Baby Arthur! Except mommy dies in childbirth, widely known as the number one cause of death for women in ye olde times. And Nimue might have (unwisely) pointed out that there is always a price to pay. And, that was it. I might have screamed THAT'S IT? at the screen a couple of times.

BTW, that isn't in any of the Arthurian legends, so that's is one  retarded plot point the Merin writers came up with on their own. Bravo (golf clap).

BBC Merlin actually does go back to the pre-Mallory legends.

In the oldest stories Merlin and Arthur were contempories (Merlin was a young child when Uther established Camelot), Uther reared Arthur himself, and Guenivere was the daughter of a "Roman".  They also went back to Uther and his original knights being the first nobles, so nobility is still a new thing that not many people are used to (see Lancelot), and gave Geoffrey of Monmouth a shoutout by making him the Court Historian.

As for Nimue and Uther, OMG that's Classic Greek Trajedy.  Uther's hubris in defying Fate/the Gods/the Balance of Nature causes his wife's death, but of course there's no way he can blame himself so he blames the messenger.  His subsequent villainy grows straight out of his guilt, but since he can never admit to his guilt over the death of his beloved wife he can never recognize his villainy.  That is perfect High Trajedy!

More Merlin spoilers

My problem with that, though, is that throughout the season, Nimueh (as the "Merlin" writers spell it) was more of a morally ambiguous character. She wasn't evil. She was just reacting to what Uther had done to her and her people. In the finale, though, all of a sudden, she turned into this mustache-twirling villain, tempting Merlin to join her and rule the world. They took an interesting character--someone who was the conflict, but you were also actually on her side, since she opposed Uther--and just transformed her into a completely out of control villain.

It would have been interesting....

...to see Nimue try to pull the sympathy card on Merlin in the finale, but since she's already tried to kill him multiple times I doubt he would have bought it.  Instead we get Nimue the terrorist:  however sympathetic her reasons were at the start, she's gone too far to turn back.  Which ultimately puts her in the same position as Uther -- and possibly the Dragon as well.

Thanks

Thank you for pointing that out, Crabby Lioness. I saw an interview with one of the writers or directors of Merlin and she said that a very definite decision was made to not only use many different English versions of the Arthurian myths, but also to mine similar mythologies elsewhere in the world. She also said that they wanted to explore the faerie world in more detail: to examine the frequently psychotic nature of faeries that existed in the ancient legends but seems to have been lost over the years. I hadn't seen the connection between the way the writers are doing things and Greek tragedy until you'd pointed it out. Until now I'd been looking at the programme and seeing sly allusions to Webster and possibly Marlowe.
Crabby Lioness's picture

Got a link?

Thanks Darrien.  I've been looking for interviews with the production staff and haven't found many.  Do you have a URL for that piece?
Darrien's picture

Unfortunately no

It was either Richard & Judy or This Morning, or The Paul o'Grady Show, but I wasn't paying that much attention. Sorry about this - it was a case of just flicking channels and listening to an interview. It didn't seem important at time. Intuitively it was Richard and Judy but I can't make any promises about that.
Crabby Lioness's picture

Thanks anyway.

That tells me to look at the video files.  :)

Funny or Die Clip

No, it wasn't the most original idea, but it did bring a smile to my face...until Will Arnett's last line. Was that really necessary?

Not Offensive

I didn't find the last comment offensive in the least.  Knowing how Will Arnett and Amy Poehler stand on gay issues, I think it was more a commentary on the hypocrisy of some closeted men.

Okay, this made my morning

Will Arnett macking on another guy. Hot! I have the biggest crush on this guy. Even it was clearly straight-boy kissing (no tongues) I still loved it. OH! Will!

Dave

Thanks for the link to the Dave Koz interview. I've been a jazz fan since I played the sax's in high school (early 70's). Dave also has a daily radio show and I listen to him quite a lot. His Christmas shows are not to be missed.

Jaded

I know I haven't posted here a lot but I've been an avid reader for several years. But Michael, I have to say that IMHO, I see you as becoming more and more jaded about things. We've known for years that Stossel is pretty much a D-bag, but several people I know who identify as "gay" will use the word preference. The explanation is that they find women attractive, have had "relations" with women, but very much prefer men. It was great for 20/20 to profile Adam and be so open about his life. But you intentionally had to post the "negative" side of it. And the reference to Bollywood and the gay punchlines followed up with the notion that its OK when gay celebs or gay-friendly celebs do it...isn't that kinda like saying its OK for black people to say "The N Word" but no one else can. I know that correlation can be seen as very different, but I'm just trying to make a point.

I really like this column a lot. I just would hate to see it evolve into a column where instead of celebrating the week in gay culture/entertainment, it becomes finger pointing of everyone who said one possibly negative thing.

Michael Jensen's picture

Thanks for the feedback. It's appreciated and

while I certainly have a different take on some of what you said, the only point I would argue is what I said about Bollywood.

Perhaps the post could've been written more clearly as I don't see the jokes on US shows being the equivalent as to the Indian ones except being told by gay people. The entire vein of humor is usually different with the joke not being gay panic -- such as was demonstrated at the Indian awards -- so much as gay in nature. A perfect example would be the Jon Stewart/George Clooney example from the Oscars a couple of years ago which was gay but also very gay-friendly.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.

I don't see it

Rik Makarem's appeal, that is.

Looks like he's got a nice body, but ever since the first filming pics showed up I was pretty much bewildered by all the fan girls squeeing about the new guy :) I will have to see him acting to judge him.

I hope it's not just another case of RTD (and Barrowman) going gaga for a hot young guy who couldn't act to save his life like Lachlan Nieboer (Grey in Exit Wounds).

Wrestlers

I'm not sure how I feel about that segment. On the one hand, I think it's great that these guys aren't ashamed of what they did, and in no way should they be kicked of the team just for that. But on the other hand, maybe it really wasn't just that. My initial reaction to Paul was that he was super attractive, but I became less attracted through out the interview because he came across as a spoiled kid who likes power, and is using this scandal for his 15 minutes of fame.

You too can be saved by the blog! www.savedbytheblog14.blogspot.com

I may be straight, but I'm not narrow.

Crabby Lioness's picture

Merlin isn't about good and evil. It's better than that.

It's about grief, guilt, regret, revenge, misplaced blame, displaced anger, love, duty, ambiguity, honor, pride, greed, rebellion, and acceptance. Above all, it's about consequences. That's not territory that American kiddie shows cover, but I believe that is what makes Merlin far more interesting than just the hoyay. Merlin is ultimately about relationships. To take just one instance, there's the relationship between Arthur and his father's foster daughter Morganna. Brought up as brother and sister but widely expected to marry, they still haven't figured out for themselves if they are siblings or potential lovers, and that is a conflict they wrestle with over the course of the first season. So if you're looking for simple escapist entertainment, you won't find it here. But if you like a little bite with your stories, this is for you.

Speaking of hoyay, here's a LOL recommendation for Merlin from The Stranger on the benefits of having a gay wizard boyfriend. http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/i-love-television/Content?oid=1705561

R.I.P. Pushing Daises

Everyone screams better television and shows like ACCORDING TO JIM run for years. Creativity and ingenuity have nothing to do with it. The networks are in trouble and they know it. Free TV viewership is way down. Don't get me wrong, I love THE MENTALIST, and not just because Simon Baker is the Sexiest thing on television, but it is just a samo-samo contrived Cop Show. TV Executives should drop the word "Creative" from their titles. Because they all in a hurry to make the money up front rather than support a show that could build an audience, Times have changed so should the Networks.

That's all I am saying...

I hope Ryan Renyolds stays out of the "romcom of death" area. He's so sweet and seems like a great guy, I had to have him lose his carrer over one lame movie. He's going to do the Deadpool movie, so there is hope. Yeah.

Nurse Jackie & Eli Stone

Just wanted to say, briefly for once, that I think 'Nurse Jackie' is the freshest show on television in years. Edie Falco is brilliant and the first two scripts have been full of surprises.Just deleted the return of 'Eli Stone' from the dvr, which I used to enjoy if only for the SF locations and all the men's adorable cleft chins. This episode was absolutely unwatchable. I know a little about the law, and the entire setup was unethical plus the courtroom scenes were a joke. This one can say goodnight. Everybody in it, particularly Victor Garber, deserves better. ABC sends yet another one over the shark.
