News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (June 26, 2009)

IN MY HUMBLE OPINION

KINGS: While I'm back to appreciating the show for being something truly different, I'm also truly annoyed that David's hetero relationship gets all sorts of screentime while Jack's homo tryst gets short shrift. Given that Jack appears to be headed for barely there status, I'm less and less sorry the show will soon be off the air.

KATHY GRIFFIN MY LIFE ON THE D-LIST: While the first half of the show lagged with Kathy's rather anti-climactic Grammy loss, the second half was wonderfully nuts. Paula Deen was a hoot and I loved she not only had her own gay (the tipsy Brandon), but her own drag queen. I never thought I'd want to hang out with Paula, but now I'd love to.

IMPACT: I'm a disaster movie junkie so anytime the planet is in peril, I'm so there. I thought the show got off to a great start by not really going where I expected it to. Too bad I can't say the same for the second half airing on Sunday. If you've seen Deep Impactor Armageddon, you've seen this movie and with a bigger budget.

WEEDS: Mary Louise Parker's deadpan delivery of her lines — "That's my sister. Her you can shoot." — is just hilarious. I also loved the medical marijuana storyline and the town cop who sees right through Silas and Doug wants his cut. And doesn't next week look intriguing...

NURSE JACKIE: Loved this week's episode what with the whole "chicken soup" theme and the elderly couple dealing the husband's mortality. Special hattip to Merritt Weaver as Nurse Zoey Brakow who steals almost every scene she is in. And if you want more Haaz Sleiman, who plays gay nurse Mo-Mo, check him out in The Visitor.

THE REAL WORLD CANCUN: After what was a relatively intelligent season of The Real World last year (keeping in mind we are talking about The Real World), I was expecting Cancun to slide backward into drunk hot tub sex. But if the first episode was any indication that isn't the case. Even better, the straight guys on the show are about as cool as straight guys get. Especially refreshing is Bronne who totally digs this season's gay guy Derek Chavez. Check out our brand new interview with Derek here! Oh, and C.J. is pretty easy on the eyes as well.

MERLIN: I'm just not feeling this show. It looks cheap, I don't think Merlin is adorkable, and you need a super powerful microscope to find any of the supposed hoyay. Supernatural this is not. But I suppose it was that stupid snake shield that really turned me off. At least Eve Myles was appealingly evil.

But since everyone says it gets better, I'll give it another episode or two.

TRUE BLOOD: OMG, what's going to happen to Lafayette? Okay, I actually know the answer to that, but that's certainly what I thought when I first saw the episode. And how about Michelle Forbes as Maryann? That woman's smile makes me want to run screaming from the room. Whereas as Eggs (Mehcad Brooks), well, he has an entirely different effect on me!

I know just how I like my Eggs served!

RAISING THE BAR: As I said last week, I appreciate that the show had Peter Paige in a gay storyline, but the whole thing felt too retro with the gay-bashing theme. Instead, it would be nice to give Charlie Sagansky get something to do — say, like a love life or an actual storyline.

Next page! Transformers' Beoufcake and Sadler's hot french accent.
