Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (July 03, 2009)
BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!
Our own Ed Kennedy will be driving the brand spanking shiny feature which will recap each of the day's soaps that don't get liveblogged. We won't be covering each show every day, but will cover whichever show has something of gay interest. Look for Daytime Drive By to debut Monday afternoon! Speaking of soap opears, Michael Logan of TVGuideMagazine interviewed yours truly for their article about the explosion of queer characters on daytime. This week the Monkey answered a question about commercials featuring gay M&Ms. One of the ads we showed sadly had Yellow and Red breaking up, but it turns out this story actually had a happy ending as you'll see in this clip.Ah, true love! (Thanks to Whitetee for letting us know about the clip!) Speaking of love, AfterElton.com reader Cassafrass recently got in touch with me because she would like to chat up a bunch of gay men. Maybe I should say chat with. She is a writer who wants to write for gay men, but first she'd really like to hear directly from us what we'd like to see in our gay fiction. If that sounds like your cup of tea, why not visit Cassafrass' website and fill out her questionnaire! Also the uber gay-friendly musician Rob Thomas has a new album out that might be worth checking out. Finally, it's the Fourth of July here in the States this Saturday, so we're taking Friday off as a holiday. But we'll be back bright and early on Monday with Everything Bagel to get the week started. Now I'll shut up so you can have the ...

Fort Worth incident
I was thinking the exact
I was thinking the exact same thing o.O
Someone please clarify this for us?
Yea its weird
I did a triple take on the sentence when I read it in news reports. Several people were arrest for PUBLIC intoxication inside a private bar. This sounds like a case of a law no right person thinks exsists becuase its so unenforceable, but cops enforce it randomly.
It reminds me of the time I was issued a summons once after taking a standarized test at school because I was waiting for a friend who wasn't done yet at the park across the street. Apparently there is a NYS state law that mandates I am forced to go home directly after school. ><
There does seem to be a serious investigation taking place and the patron who was seriously injured is now stable and getting bettter, so there is some good news out of the lunacy.
I was kind of surprised...
I understand the point of the visit, "officially", was to make sure that bartenders weren't over-serving patrons - a lot of states have laws about that, and bartenders and the bars themselves can be criminally liable for that if there's a DUI or something. But I've never heard of them turning it on the patrons for arrest. And I've been exceedingly intoxicated in Texas bars before.
Let's hope the investigation goes the way it should this time. But I have my doubts.
YES
It is illegal in TX is admit a drunk person into your bar. It is illegal to serve a drunk person. It is illegal to overserve your patrons. Patrons can be cited for intoxication in or out of a bar--or the appearance thereof. Texas follows Dram Shop Laws, where both the bartender and establishment can be held criminally and civilly liable for serving alcohol to a patron if something should happen to them (alcohol-related) after they leave your establishment. If you were the last bartender to serve them, very likely it is your ass on the line.
If the place you serve drinks in Texas doesn't require you to be TABC certified, it is their ass on the line.
TABC can enter any establishment at any time either undercover or stating their presence. They can check to make sure that your liquor bottles contain more than 1oz of liquor. If not, you get a ticket. They can check anything and everything in the bar follows the law and TABC rules and regulations. They can cite patron conduct lewd or otherwise. If your hand is on someone's clothed genitals, they can cite you.
The TABC is like the secret police. They have their own authority and jurisdiction. Whether or not they have the same power as the police is unclear to me, but I have been in a bar where the TABC raided. (I was working at the time) They brought the police with them. People were ticketed, the bar owners were ticketed and fined.
God Bless Texas!

Sally Kern thinks we can dismantle the world economy, yet we can’t pass the Matthew Shepard Act. I wish the gay agenda was as powerful as Ant-Gay Agenda claims, one can dream. *Sigh*
So the queen did kill Jack’s BF? I thought it was murder with a suicide cover-up at first, but my friend said he committed suicide as a weird way to force Jack to come to term with himself and I just assumed he was right. Is there ambiguity to which happened or was it a murder cover-up?
I sure Derek defended him because his guitar broke. While its obvious Joey went over the line, in the end he was the only one who lost something and it was something he couldn't replace that was dear to him.
i thought the same thing
Damn you for being a horrible tease, Michael!

Those darned British are hogging the coolness for themselves. I managed to get the first two, I'll look into a way of shring them if anyone wnts. I don't however, have The Dead Line, which was by far the best.
"To make a bad day worse, spend it wishing for the impossible." - Calvin of Calvin and Hobbes
the first two
Were available right after the airing (I think they're blocked now), but today's play wasn't.
I listened no problem when it airs and then asked my friend *coughs*ukbasedproxyserver*coughs* for help ;)
Radio Plays!
Someone in the UK was kind enough to upload them all for those of us in other countries: click here for the download page.
Be ready for a breathtaking monologue from GDL an some beautiful Jack/Ianto bits in the 3rd clip. :)

Thanks very much for
Thanks very much for the link.
Those plays were fun, and you're right, the Ianto/Jack bits in the third one were lovely.

"When the Queen had Prince Jack's boyfriend killed..."
Did I miss something? I don't think that's what happened - I don't see how she would have had time, given that the mail was still being delivered. I think he actually did kill himself, and that made sense, so I didn't see any reason to look for a conspiracy.

Gene Simmons
I agree with you. I don't
I agree with you. I don't like Gene Simmon's opinion, nor do I agree with, but I would be a hypocrite if I didn't think he had a right to say it.
The whole football players and Bruno thing is interesting. I realize that the boys are young, and some are minors, but didn't they have permission forms? Personally, I want to hear their thoughts on the photoshoot, because they obviously seem pretty open-minded, and this looks suspiciously like a case where parents freak out over something their kid does, even if the kid is OK with it.

I may be straight, but I'm not narrow.
Will Young
when will young came out after winning Pop idol, it was a lot of controversy, teen girls crying an a lot of articles saying that he killed his career even before the start.
But the truth is his first album sales were good (better that Simon Cowell favourite Gareth Gates). People said then that it was the influence of being the winner of Pop Idol. But his second album (which was far better in terms of quality) give him another status, and great sales.
Maybe USA society is not so inmature as a lot of people think. I follow AI with regularity since seventh season, and this one i follow a really good blog almost daily. Most of female Adam's fans know he is gay from the very begining and they couldn't care less. Adam has the strange quality to catch people¡s attention, and i predict if the album is good, he will do it very well, and he is one of the few idol contestants that has enough appeal to do it well in europe. But success after the contest is very difficult to predict. I totally hate Jordin Sparks during idol, and against all odds she is doing quite well in the US, and has some success in europe
Will Young Redux
Yep, Will Young has done remarkably well since Pop Idol. For a long time he was the biggest selling Idol winner from anywhere in the world (I don't know if he still is) and still manages amazing sales across Europe and Asia (though not so much America). The thing is he established a solid fan base that was mostly made up of middle aged women (who would love him as a gay son-in-law), tweenies who held him up as an unconquerable sex object who'd probably sign their autograph book even if he wouldn't sleep with them and, of course, the gays. And that audience has stayed with him despite/because of/irespective of him using more explicitly gay lyrics in his later albums.
I really liked what Adam Lambert in AI said about America. I know that some eople here think Americans are incredibly stupid (and just to be controversial, most of those comments seem to come from other Americans), but the fact he reached the finals despite being obviously 'different' just reinforced my opinion that Americans are basically really nice people.
And yet again, you're totally right that Adam Lambert will be defined by his songwriters. If he gets the right songs he'll be a superstar and if he doesn't he'll be forgotten. When it comes down to it, people remember the songs that chart their life more than the performance initially.

I wished no such thing! I just said if it happened....
