News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (July 6, 2007)

FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE

Nothing at the box office this week, I'm sorry to say. DVD brings Wild Tigers I Have Known, a coming-of-age tale written, directed, and produced by Cam Archer with Gus Van Sant as executive producer.

I don't usually talk much about theater, but next Tuesday brings the debut of the Broadway musical Xanadu which is being touted as the gayest thing since, well, the movie version of Xanadu. We'll have our review on Wednesday for you, but first, on Monday, we'll have a very rare review with out Broadway star Cheyenne Jackson who skated to the rescue of the show after the original Sonny, James Carpinello broke his leg in two places. Ouch!

Cheyenne talks about why he is out and what it has meant to his career, what makes Xanadu so gay, and which Hollywood actor he'd most like to shoot a romantic scene with.

The Fourth of July holiday blew a bit of a hole in the middle of the viewing week, but there were still a few notable things on the air. One was an edition of ABC's Primetime Live: Family Secrets that looked at the story of Prince Manvendra Singh Gohil of India.

Singh Gohil is Indian royalty, so last year when he gave an interview to a local paper in which came out as gay, it was big news all across the country. I thought Primetime Live handled the story quite well, portraying Singh Gohil as a courageous man telling his truth to the world and making the world a better, more tolerant place. The only anti-gay comments came from the prince's father who, frankly, looked like a bigot. Otherwise we mostly heard from Singh Gohil himself and saw the great work he is doing in HIV prevention. Hats off to the prince and to ABC for telling his story.

Big Brother 8 debuted last night on CBS and a second episode airs on Sunday night. As we discussed over on the blog, there are two gay contestants -- Dustin and Joe. One of the twists this year is that viewers get to "manipulate" one of the contestants. Could be interesting to see what that would mean for either Joe or Dustin.

As I mentioned above, on Monday's ATWT Luke tells Noah he is gay. It should be interesting to see how Noah takes that news. On Tuesday night's episode of Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List Kathy entertains the convicts at a prison and gets ready to host the GAYVN Awards -- you know, the awards for "adult" movies.
