Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (July 10, 2009)

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!
I don't know how I missed this, but last month USA Today interviewed the very funny Cloris Leachman and Betty White who go together like peanut butter and chocolate. For example:

As White enters the suite, the actresses warmly embrace while Leachman introduces the man behind the mascara wand. "We're so sorry he's gay," she says with a shrug, "but he is." Suggests White, with a wicked glint in her eye, "Maybe we can convince him.".

If anyone can, they could!

The gay guy is mine! All mine!

Ronnie Kroell is only 117 votes out of first place to become the spokesman for UrbanDecay's Lip Gloss for guys. Not sure why he wants that particular honor but vote for him now

How's this for depressing? This post on Transracial discusses a poll saying Black Men Nation's Most Unwanted Sexual Partners.

Has Graham Norton overstayed his welcome? Judging from the reaction to his new Saturday night BBC gig, the answer might be yes.

So let me see if I have this right — car companies are fine using beautiful women to flog cars, but a couple of guys in speedos is too provocative. Let me guess — a straight guy decided this, right?

Australian television is going to get a gay couple as part of the reality show Australia's Perfect Couple. Hmm, why am I worried this won't be a perfect reality show? Oh, wait — it's not on Bravo!

Details to follow!

Bermuda might finally be making some progress on gay rights

Greg Berlanti talks drama

The actor who plays Joe the Bartender on Grey's Anatomy (well, occasionally anyway) tweets about naked guys in lockerrooms.

Hmm, can't say I disagree with that!

Now I'll shut up so you can have the BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER!

LOL hate Bravo that much?

BGWE

There should definitely be a time limit on how long people can be naked. A constitutional amendment does not sounds out of line.

Your review for NYC Prep and Miami Social are probably the most hateful things I've read since RNC speech transcripts. I'm not saying I didn't thoroughly enjoy the first page but can any show really be that bad? You almost make me want to watch it.

I think the RR:Cancun should have gotten an Up arrow. I don't recall the guys being excited to go out to a gay bar in support of the gay roomate in previous seasons, I thought it was touching even though they ditched the girls and it aired for 10 seconds. Also by the end of Wednesday's episode the girl/guy divide dissolved, so at least that won't play out for an entire season like it did for the RR:Brooklyn. But, unfortunately everyone blamed everything up on Aiiya instead of confronting her in a calm manner, even if it may not have worked.

Katrina Gent will truly be missed on Kings, she was the only character who knew who Jack was and didn't hate him for it. Ironically she was going to let him live his life without guilt and fear by marrying him. The Queen killed his happy ending. :/

Michael's On Fire!

It has been a while since we've had a smackdown this good! And I can't be more pleased that the object of this smackdown is Bravo and its degradation into vapid Reality TV Central. Were the ratings for Inside The Actor's Studio that bad? They've certainly taken a turn for the worst with their adherence to reality TV.

And sadly, we have a bunch of resentful fags who vicariously live through these shows. They get to live through the eyes of the bully for once. Petty gay men are abundant, it would seem.

I'm glad that Lifetime stole from Bravo and degayed PR. That way, I don't have to see more caricatures of gay men. Enough with them on reality TV. I'd rather we go back to the fucking 50's if that's the representation we will get.

But, seriously, Michael, the jabs at Miami Social were especially delicious. You should e-mail that first page to Bravo.

Top Chef

I was a bit disappointed in Top Chef. Neil and David didn't even sit next to each other. They were never in the same frame. And not mentioning their relationship!?! - they wear rings on their ring/marriage finger (well, on the right hand instead of the left) . . . it was odd indeed.
Randommer's picture

Traditionally, you never

Traditionally, you never seat couples together at a dinner party, to encourage conversation. And maybe David didn't want to be credited as 'boyfriend'
Dee's picture

I totally agree with you Randommer

When Michael wrote about them not mentioning David was Neil's BF, the first thought that came to my mind is maybe David didn't want to be introduced as Neil's BF. He is still an aspiring actor and he probably doesn't want to be only known as that and the Susan/ Tim comment was ridiculous to me. They were both established actors when people started saying the partner comments. When and if David's acting career takes off, maybe he want mind then.

Asshat CanCon

Oh my, Canadian Content in the Asshat vote. Three really good choices that I could easily vote for but I guess I'm going to have to go with national pride this week.

Was checking out Twitter and found out that even Trost's local paper takes him to task over the issue.

http://www.thestarphoenix.com/news/Trost+claims+about+grant+most+troubling/1773309/story.html

What makes it look even worse, the funding was being used for such things as improved access for the disabled and improvements to websites promoting the event.

Hmmm, trying to find these embarassing photos of the Minister giving out the cheque but have not found anything yet. ICK, did manage to stumble in to some right wing propaganda articles about the funding. Usual lies and distortion of events.

Thanks for taking notice of us up here in the north --I think -- however as for Stephen Harper being asshat material the pride funding story is already old news. He's managed to screw up a G8 summit photo shoot (for the 2nd time!) and then got into a mess over a communion host/waffer at a state funeral. The man is an embarrassment. Tries to contain the more radical right wing elements of the party but they still manage to slip out sometimes.

Biting the hand that feeds.

Its a bit disheartening reading so much hate for a network that literally gives this site two thirds of its television shows to report/comment on. I can understand and agree with you on the vapidness of some of the shows, but to go and nominate them for the Asshat Award? Just a little harsh. Oh, and to say Lifetime would make Top Chef better... HERESY!

Now let's pile on Andy Cohen too

I think that Bravo deserves all this s*** but, seriously, most of it came from the mind of Andy Cohen. The housewife shows were the beginning of the end. Even someone as repellant as Jeff Lewis made for good television. What those appalling women are doing being followed around LA, Atlanta, NYC, and now NJ is a complete mystery. And to add to the debacle, then they show up in the voting audience on that absolutely atrocious 'Fashion Show.' Can't a real network find a place for something as consistently brilliant as 'My Life on the D List'? Thanks for singling out the 'network' that seemed originally to be our friend.  Even Neil Patrick Harris was poorly served on 'Top Chef Masters.'  If I were David Burtka I would be furious.

Top Chef Masters/Color Splash

Hey, what do you mean "four chefs we don't really know or care about?" Anita Lo, who totally kicked butt and won, is an out lesbian. But what *was* up with them not mentioning Neil and David's relationship? They didn't even sit next to each at the table or at the magic show. I watched the ep with my mom, and if I hadn't told her who David was, she would have had no idea. So between Anita and Neil and David, this was a very gay episode, but only to the small percentage of viewers who already knew who they were.

In other gay TV news, the sixth season of Color Splash premieres Saturday night on HGTV at 9ET. I can't wait! David Bromstad will also be competing on HGTV Showdown on Sunday night.

GM Ad

Well, the footage was removed from everywhere obvious, but I did see a few of the stills. Definitely marketed to us, and they're fools for not trying. But I also think it's marketed at woman of a certain generation - call them the Megan Foxes of the world. And alienating your customers by showing your open disgust for them is never wise, and doing it this way begs the Streisand Effect.

Lately, I've been enjoying the Coppertone Sport ad that's on TV nonstop. Sure, the guys have spent a little too much time in the waxing salon, but when I was a kid, they advertised sun block with girls with big breasts in bikinis, now we get ripped guys in spandex running on the beach. I'll buy a product that markets that shamelessly at me.

bravo is turning....

Bravo is turning into MTV for an older generation now. all these housewives show that follow wealthy ass people around.....

i just gotta say....i dont care if someone is wealthy....yeah, money is nice....but at the same time, i dont wanna turn on the tv and constantly see wealthy people in their big homes, nice cars constantlyyyyyyy.

it seems like that is ALL that bravo will be airing from now on. maybe they should change the network to "rich people with drama: watch what happens"

I also think its in poor taste during a recession. hell, if everyone had steady jobs and was bringing in enough money, then fine....maybe i would just shrug it off.

 bravo is going downhilllll.

How is one man calling

How is one man calling another man a douchebag an insult to women? I don't get it?

I love Christian Siriano, but I don't know that I'd refer to him as being "nice" on his season of PR. He was rather bitchy and mean.

And I will be checking out Miami Social just for the simple fact that Hardy from Big Brother 2 is on it. Swoon.

David's a chef you know

"Bravo" should make up for it by having a very special episode where he cooks for Neil. Actually Neil and David at Home in Studio City would make for a great "reality" series. Kathy Griffin could pop in as their "wacky neighbor" and the boys could plan a party for Anderson Cooper and Julio Cesar Recio.

Speaking of series, someone should do one for Cloris Leachman and Betty White. Who need s a premise? Just put these two FABULOUS women on together and let them loose.

Finally -- I hate Humpday with the fury of a thousand suns. Infinitely more offensive than Bruno.

Haven't seen "Humpday" but did see "The Hangover"

I am officially done with Todd Phillips movies--the word "faggot" is used as a punchline once too often, and I'm also tired of gay or effeminate men being used as jokes or threats.  I know nothing about this man personally, but I don't want to support his "art."  (I'd have been a little more forgiving if the movie actually made me laugh.)  Comparatively, I'm feeling more optimistic about "Humpday"--"The Hangover" could make one weep for the future of American manhood.

Andy Cohen

You should interview Andy Cohen and find out why he likes trash TV so much. I used to read his blog every day and found it entertaining, but then weird things started creeping in.

He would vehemently deny that the producers had any influence in the votes on Project Runway (despite the fact that there is a large disclaimer that runs on every episode saying that they do). He would promote that nasty, stupid woman who runs the gym on Work Out as if she were the Virgin Mary. He would alternately extol or complain about the taxis he rode to work every day, in the city that has the best public transport in the country--even during Universal's (his boss) GREEN WEEK.

But probably most telling is that his favorite non-Bravo show is Big Brother. The list of attrocities he has foisted on the world is legion: Blow Out, Work Out, Millionaire Matchmaker, that Jeff Lewis mess, Real Housewives of places you never want to go (who are neither real nor housewives. He gets a pass on Boy Meets Boy because he wasn't the top guy when that was greenlit. About the only good thing he's done was Project Runway, and he cocked that up so badly they went running to another network.

Someone needs to put a stop to him now! I think it's too late for an intervention, so let's hope the network's decline into nothing but trash tv and recycling the same show multiple times gets him fired.

Bravo TV

Andy Cohen does have some pretty bad shows. I try to stay away from most of the shows that are on Bravo now because they're just stupid.

Shows I like on Bravo: Re-runs of Project Runway (Oh yes they're on),Real Housewives of New Jeresy (Minus that lying Danielle), Flipping Out (Jeff is really fun to watch and seems like a really cool guy. Can't wait for the show to return in August), and Kathy Giffin my Life on the D-List (Funny, funny, funny)

Shows I hate on Bravo: Any Real Housewives besides New Jeresy, NYC Prep (Really billing as the "real" life Gossip Girl? More like a trasher version of The Hills), The Fashion show (Really SO bad...a really poor mans Project Runway), Miami Social (Not even on yet and I don't want to see it!), and The Rachel Zoe Project (She's annoying!)

Have you been to SOBE?

South Beach is renown for it's clash between the easy going patrons that creep up from the keys and the completely self-absorbed masses that reside on the coast and in the islands. I actually like that SOBE has the vapid and (sic) vain walking around half-naked on its beaches. They make for nice eye candy. Plus, if you get them buzzed they'll usually let down their guard and... So a show about SOBE without the "A Holes" would be a show about Hollywood, FL. That said I will not be watching the show. They make for good eye candy but to actually listen? care? Great column. BTW don't knock Billy Cambell for doing a crappy disaster flick. There is an entire genre of volcano, meteor, earth ending films that suck so bad you cannot help but watch.

It honestly doesn't bother

It honestly doesn't bother me that Bravo features some repellant examples of gay people. Shockingly, there ARE actual nasty, spiteful, self-absorbed, racist, obnoxious gay people in the world. Even here at AE! (GASP!)

Maybe I'm in the minority, but to be honest, I'm so sick of worrying about "gay representation." I no longer care what Mr. and Mrs. Generic American in Breadbasket, USA think about gay people... and I highly doubt they'd be watching Bravo anyway.

It's time we all woke up and realized that gay people come in all shapes and sizes, not just those that are palatable to Middle America and make us all look like saints.

Are you guys at AE

Are you guys at AE contradicting each other? I have on several occasions read that you want diversity in your gay characters, and not necessarily have them all be the nice guy, but maybe a villainous and not so nice guys as well. Then I read the start of this article and you seem to be unhappy when Bravo gives you diversity. Granted, I haven't seen the show, so it just might be as awful as you've described but you should decide on what you want. Do you want different personalities as far as gay characters go, or do you want gay men to be portrayed as nice, likable guys?
Michael Jensen's picture

Diversity is a great thing and I'm all for it, but I can't

say I'm favor of a-holes and pricks when it comes to diversity. As I said about Miami Social, the straight people are just as bad and I see no reason for the existence of this show at all.

Part of my objection to MS is the whole bitchy gay queen stereotype which exactly describes Ariel who is among the bitchiest I've ever seen.  He adds nothing to the show and, based on him here, I'd say to the world. And the same for PC who behaves horribly. That's not diversity in my book, but a network cravenly stooping into the gutter for reasons.

As for gays needing to be likeable, not at all. I mention Jeff Lewis, also from Bravo, who is a prickly, difficult personality, but I find him watchable and interesting.  Richard Hatch from Survivor was very interesting and many of the characters on day time soaps these days behave less than angelically which is great. And how about Lafayette from True Blood? He'd probably sell me to the vampires in a heart beat, but I love watching him. But he's not a raging a-hole with no social redeeming value either.

Finally, sure those of us writing here contradict each other. We're not a monolithic group speaking with one voice and someone I find abhorrent might seem great to another writer on staff. Until I fire them. LOL!

Miami & Prep

I agree with you completely about these shows on Bravo--though I still watch D-List and any of the "Chef" shows--just the ads for these shows make me want to throw something at the television.  It's not just about bad gay images it's about degrading human images in general.  I find these people repellent and will not watch them whether they're gay or straight.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Thanks for clearing that up. Being a European I have no idea what goes on on American networks, at least most of the time. You know, the bitchyness is exactly why I don't watch reality. At all. Can't stand 'em, so my sympathies for having to watch several hours of it.

Bravo Has Gone Wacko

Bravo has gotten so bad over the last couple of years it's downright pathetic. I used to love this network. What first drew me was "Inside the Actor's Studio." But then it became "Inside the Actor Who has a New Movie Releasing Studio" and "Inside Whoever We Can Get to Sit in the Chair." Really? Barbara Walters?

I never used to mind the 'annoying gay people' on "Project Runway" until the last season, when most of the gay guys were not just annoying, it became obvious that they were only on the show for their annoying characteristics and not for their talent.  I still have hope for "Top Chef."  But, the masters version didn't do anything for me at all.  And I haven't been all that happy with Kathy Griffin this season either although I still love her.  Unfortunately, I missed this week's episode and the amazing Betty White.  Speaking of that, have you noticed that they haven't been replaying Kathy's show incessantly like they have the housewives?  I think that speaks volumes to what Bravo has become!

And that brings me to the "Real Housewives" and all the other 'rich people behaving like morons and a**holes' shows that have become the bread and butter for the dying network.  I find these shows to be nothing but repulsive. Seriously, why has manufactured "drama" become the mainstay of television AND seemingly so many people's personal lives?

I personally refer to it as the "Jerry Springer Syndrome." And when I see it in real life, I have to walk away and let the "drama queens" (for lack of a better term) play their games and mess up their lives and not involve me.  So, I do the same thing with TV.  Unfortunately Bravo has become a home to promoting that type of behavior and I just can no longer watch.  It's a shame too, because, like Michael said, they used to present our community with pride and a certain "genteelness" that was refreshing.   And it was in a format the presented people who were using their talents to create something.

Yes, I understand that there are angry, vapid, annoying people in the gay community.   I've met my fair share thank you very much.  But angry, vapid and annoying is not something I care to see in real life or in "reality" TV.  When someone of that ilk is presented in a dramatic or comedic fictional format, that character can actually be someone who teaches us something.  But when presented strictly for shock value, it is numbing and boring.

That is all.

BTW...Betty White + Cloris Leachman = JOY!

Asshat in Canada? Say it isn't so!

Sadly, I had to vote for my country this week. I do believe the government's response that it isn't punishment, so while Harper isn't an ass for this particular incident, IMO, he deserves a nod for all the other asshat things he's done (trying to reverse our legalization of gay marriage, pulling out of the Kyoto protocol, just generally being an embarrassment for us, etc.) On a brighter note, looks like even the Conservatives think Trost is an ass: http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/article/663786

So was he suppose to do "gay stuff" all the time?

Just maybe he's not doing "gay stuff" anymore because he's not being offered. He is 50 years old now (even though he doesn't look it) and most gay movies I see now are cast with younger guys.

I think he still does good stuff. 4400 was awesome and he was so freaking hot in it, he was good in Ghost Town and "Revolution" sounds like it's going to be good too. I haven't seen Meteor yet.
