Best. Gay. Week. Ever! "Shameless" Casting News and Where Did the "F" Word Come From?
UH OH. IT'S GOING TO BE A STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS COLUMN. BUCKLE UP!
Man, you take a couple of days off and you get the gayest Emmy nominations ever and about a zillion other things happen that I need to catch up and comment on. How to cover it all?
Hmm, how about I just open my mind up and do it stream of consciousness style? Things might sort of leap all over the place, but it should be interesting. Ready, here we go. Prying open subconscious and...
Nooo! It's awful in here! So cold and dark and empty! Aieeee!
Oh, wait. I actually opened Mary Cheney's soul. How did that happen?
So where did the Flying Monkey (that would be Brent, my partner) and I go last week that kept me from writing the BGWE? A couple hours north of where we live are the San Juan Islands which are some of the most stunningly beautiful places on earth. We stayed in a cute hotel, rode our bikes around and read these things called "books!"
Here we are riding a ferry between the Islands.
Isn't Brent adorable? Even after all these years together, I never get tired of him.
Speaking of people named Brent, I watched two episodes of The Fabulous Beekman Boys after I got home and man, am I ever glad the only thing my relationship has in common with theirs is someone named Brent. When Josh interviewed about his Brent that he only gets to spend two days a week with him and sometimes that's too much, I thought "What the hell are you two doing together?" If that's how you feel about the person you are with, you need some serious evaluation of your life!
Am I the only one wondering how their relationship has lasted ten years?
As long as were discussing people I'd rather not spend time with, is anyone the least bit surprised that Mel Gibson is a raging bigot like we thought all along? Personally, I've never believed any of his apologies and have suspected he hated us gays ever since Bird on a Wire.
And a note to Whoopi Goldberg, just because he's nice to you, does not mean he's not a racist. It's fine if you stand by him in private, but honestly, defending him in public as not being a bigot only makes me question your judgment. I loved my grandfather and he was a very sweet man, but he was a racist. And I think a drunk Mel is the real Mel.
Oh, oh, before I forget — a HUGE thanks to Snicks who at the last minute kept the site running all by himself the second half of last week. As many of you know, Ed's grandmother passed unexpectedly last weekend, so in addition to Dennis being off on vacation and my being gone starting on Wednesday, we didn't have Ed either. But Snicks strapped on his superhero outfit and came to the rescue.
I say we all give him a standing ovation!
Our hero!
While we are on the topic of superheroes, I know there is huge interest in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World in large part because of Wallace, Scott's gay best friend. Not knowing anything about the books, I got the series to read ... and only made it through the first book and a half. What can I say? I just wasn't a fan of Bryan Lee O'Malley's drawing style and the writing didn't thrill me either.
Now before you SPCTW fans go all pitchfork-y on me, I went and watched the movie trailers and those I thought worked. The sensibility that fans love the book for, but that I didn't see, seems much more clear in the trailers. Now I'm actually looking forward to seeing the movie.
So let's just delete the hate email you were about to send, okay?
Now that I've mentioned movies, I have to bring up HBO's Temple Grandin starring Clarie Danes. Now there is nothing "gay" about this (although one could argue that back in the 60s, both autism and homosexuality were widely misunderstood) but this is one of the best movies I've seen this year. In fact, if this had been a theatrical release, I guarantee that both Danes and the movie itself would be Oscar frontrunners instead of guaranteed Emmy winners.
See this movie now!
