Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (July 18, 2008)

Dennis here, holding the reins to this week's BGWE. Let me say at the start that this hasn’t been such a great week for me: I stumbled on some poison oak doing yard work last weekend, and now I’m a blotchy red itchy mess. That's what I get for moving to the country.

Hey, speaking of blotchy red itchy messes, how about that Nigel Lythgoe?

Our own Michael Jensen managed to corner the producer and head judge of So You Think You Can Dance at the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour this week. Michael asked him why the FOX reality show, now in its fourth season, has never had any out gay contestants. Lythgoe said he wasn't at all surprised by that. He claims the subject of sexual orientation "just wouldn't come up" during the normal course of the show.

Who is he trying to kid? Sexual orientation comes up a lot. Usually in the interview segments where a male contestant is trying desperately to convince you he has the hots for his female dance partner!

Nigel went on to explain that sexual orientation would make no difference to how he treated a contestant:

"I’m never worried if anybody’s gay. What I don’t like on the dance show, to be frank, is effeminate boys that mince around the stage. I don’t care if they’re gay or straight. That’s got nothing to do with it for me."

So in other words, Lythgoe isn't a homophobe, he's a mince-aphobe. You can clearly see that in the way he judges the male contestants on the show. Come off as "straight" and he goes easy on you, but offer any sign that you might not actually be horny for your female dance partner and Lythgoe will have your head.

Here's just a sampling of comments Lythgoe has made to some of the male contestants recently...

"You're very soft in your arms, and it doesn't get there strongly enough. It's a bit twee."

"Krumping is an alpha male dance, its a lion's roar ... my granny is more gangster than you. When you came out, it was like that [stands up and demonstrates] - it was like 'Momma I wannna pee pee.' It was so weak!"
