Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (July 18, 2008)FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE Movies Good news! There's something totally gay at the multiplex this week – and I’m not talking Christian Bale in black latex (although that’s sorta gay, isn’t it?) No, I’m talking Mamma Mia!, which as you’ve no doubt already heard offers a bit of a gay plot twist involving Colin Firth's character. That’s right, the dashing Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice plays for our team in this thoroughly entertaining movie musical.
Colin Firth and Amanda Seyfried But that’s not all! In addition to Firth you have the always amazing Meryl Streep, the gorgeous Dominic Cooper, and gay-fave Christine Baranski. You also have Amanda Seyfried, who you might recognize as Veronica's murdered best friend Lilly on Veronica Mars. Or more recently, as the eldest daughter of a polygamist family on HBO's Big Love. This girl's movie career really seems to be taking off. Next up for her is Jennifer’s Body which is a horror/comedy written by Diablo Cody (who won an Oscar for Juno).
Meryl Streep & Seyfried Also opening is Dark Knight, which features a much balleyhooed posthumous performance by Heath Ledger. Our own Brian Juergens got to see it earlier this week at a preview screening (lucky stiff) and says that Ledgers' turn as the Joker totally lives up to all the hype. Check out his glowing review here.
The only other notable wide release today is Space Chimps. You can probably skip that one. Seems like the only thing it has to recommend it is some voice work by Kristen Chenoweth and Andy Samberg. I love Chenoweth's squeeky little voice, but unless he's singing "D*ck in a Box" Samberg's vocals aren't that big of a sell to me.
Next page! A gay John Hughes teen comedy, and Neil Patrick Harris rules the web.
