Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (September 19, 2008)

FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE
So let's see, what's coming up this week in terms of gay entertainment? First and foremost, if you're in New York or Los Angeles, do check out Save Me, the "gay reparative therapy" drama starring Chad Allen, Robert Gant and Judith Light. It's a frank and fair discussion of what drives people on both sides of the issue, and Light in particular is fantastic as the hard-nosed Christian woman devoting her life to "praying the gay away".

Chad Allen in Save Me

Folks in a few cities will also get the chance to see Canadian import Breakfast With Scot, which we weren't so hot on but which is nice enough for a family comedy.

Otherwise there's gay-fave Greg Kinnear haunting Ricky Gervais in the comedy Ghost Town, gay-fave Patrick Wilson being haunted by Samuel L. Jackson in racially-charged thriller Lakeview Terrace, and Dane Cook haunting our collective consciousness in the sure-to-be abysmal My Best Friend's Girl. Seriously, if any of you pay money to see that I will personally come to your house and pinch you 'til you bleed.

On television, it is a crazy-busy week for season premieres, so hang on...

First, on Sunday we've got the third episode of True Blood, which I've seen and which I can say is utterly batcrap crazy. It introduces a few new gay characters (some alive, some otherwise) and reveals a hell of a lot more about Lafayette ... much of which some viewers likely won't be very happy with. We'll definitely have lots to talk about on Monday. (As a side note, the show was just renewed for another season by HBO, so it's not going anywhere anytime soon!)

Lance Bass and Lacey "Don't Call Me David" Schwimmer

On Monday we've got the big gay premiere of Dancing With the Stars, featuring Lance Bass as the first out contestant ever (judge Bruno Tonioli has always been out). We'll of course be following closely. Monday also marks the season premiere of How I Met Your Mother (starring out Emmy nom Neil Patrick Harris, whom we just interviewed last week) and new eps of Gossip Girl, Shirts & Skins, and Raising the Bar (which was also renewed for another season this week, much to our surprise!)

Tuesday brings us a new Dr. Kyle-centric episode of General Hospital: Night Shift, which marks the first appearance of Chad Allen as his new love interest. (We'll have some fun behind-the-scenes goodies to share with you as we get closer to the date, so stay tuned!) Also, Tuesday brings new eps of  Greek, Privileged, and The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency. Catty!

Actor Matt Lauria and exec prod Oliver Goldstick

On Wednesday NBC's Lipstick Jungle kicks off a new season, which will feature several gay characters officially coming out as it progresses, starting with Matt Lauria's Roy. The second gay is a mystery (or as I like to call them, Surprise!Gay) but we should expect him to come out around episode nine, apparently.

Also returning is The New Adventures of Old Christine, which will reportedly find Christine marrying her female friend (played by Wanda Sykes) at some point, so that might be worth checking out. There will of course be a new Project Runway and a new Top Design, and we'll be recapping both on the blog to see how our Teams Gay are holding up.

Charlie Herschel, Survivor: Gabon's Team Gay

On Thursday Survivor: Gabon premieres, which of course features out lawyer Charlie Herschel. And returning with their gay supporting characters are (take a deep breath) The Office (Oscar), ER, Grey's Anatomy (out actor T.R. Knight), My Name is Earl, and of course the aforementioned and ever-fabulous Ugly Betty.

Is that it? Lordy, my TiVo hurts just thinking about it...

So anyway, I better stop yammering on and let you go so you can have the BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER!

Greek

I think you are being a little unfair to Greek. You mention that Calvin has been absent from several episodes this season - actually, he's only been absent from one. He had a reasonable storyline in the first episode this season (his friendship with Rusty), he was absent the second episode, and he helped out a bit (albiet, not much) in the third episode as the dealer at the blackjack table. And then he had the gay bar storyline in the last episode aka the fourth episode. It's the nature of TV shows that secondary characters get less screen time. If you noticed, Evan and Frannie were absent this last episode entirely, and Rebecca and Dale have certainly sat out a few episodes themselves. So, I don't think it's fair to criticize the show for treating Calvin like a secondary character... He IS a secondary character. The show has always been centered on Casey and Rusty and too a slightly lesser extent, Cappie. I suppose you could criticize the show for not having a primary gay character, but that doesn't seem fair, either. If Calvin gets less visibility than the other secondary characters, by all means, complain. But I don't think that's the case here. And at the end of the day, this is one of the most balanced gay characters on TV. Certainly the one I feel most represents me. Rant over. Sorry - I'm a little protective of the show.

Me too on Greek

Totally agree with Pops! Besides how gay was the Out phalluses theme where Beaver was crying and all soft until the boys decided to blow something up! And there was scene where Beaver put Cappie's head on his shoulder. These reflect the sheer beauty of the show and they don't have to all gay-in-your face the whole show. Plus Michael Rady is a welcome additio.

Go Greek!

I also want to chime in with my support of Greek.  It is the show I look forward to the most every week, and always has me laughing out loud.  It has twists and turns like a soap opera, but unlike a shallow series like Gossip Girl, Greek relies on its clever dialogue and characters to keep you coming back.

I love Calvin.  I find him a far more interesting gay character than any other on TV.  Like Sal on Mad Men, he may be a secondary character but he is never boring.  I also love that Greek seems to have three recurring gay characters now -- Calvin, Heath, and Michael.  More than 90% of scripted shows these days.  Plus, all of them are different from each other, and are never allowed to just be defined as the "gay character" on the show.

Plus, the whole Gender Studies Phallus bit was very funny and clever.  It goes along well with the article AfterElton published on gay creators injecting queer theory and culture into even the straight aspects of TV shows.  My hats off to Patrick Sean Smith.

GREEK geek here

I hope it's clear that I love the show - in fact, I've been the primary cheerleader for the series since the beginning here on the site, and did the interviews with Sean Smith and the head of ABC Family and almost all of the recaps.

But that said, this season has been a bit of a let-down when it comes to Calvin. I think his character is just stalled, although this ep did hint that things with Heath might be heating up, which would be something. And after all the talk about the gay bar they spent very little time there and nothing really happened ... I was just expecting more given how creative and fresh the show usually is.

And sure, the show's got a great gay sensibility that can be enjoyed even when Calvin's not on screen (usually courtesy of Cappie, who loves to make those gay-vague comments about himself), but I think Calvin's getting the short shrift this season.

Just my opinion, of course! I'm glad there are other folks out there willing to stand up for the series, as I haven't given up on it yet myself.

Isn't She Amazing?

Judith and all of those gals, (and guys), on Ugly Betty... it's like a task force of gay supportiveness! And how cool that they are all starring on one of the best, brightest, funniest shows currently on TV. I can't wait for the new season!

I know, I know ...

Been one of those weeks, and that was one show I didn't have time to catch up on. I know today we're putting up a pretty big clip, so I'll leave that one to next week's column.

Amazing

Quite frankly I am amazed at the prolific efforts going on here! The True Blood vlog is a total masterpiece except let's get a look at the shirtless camera guy! The total content of this site stunning and the balance is good from ultra queer to total geek!

Good point. I had already watched the clip and forgot that it wasn't on here so you can imagine why I felt the need to post.

The Happy Hour

It's a long running joke in Minneapolis that the bar that Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show frequented was TV's first gay bar. There was often a conspicuous sign hanging behind Lou Grant, "Happy Hour", which was the name of a side bar in Minneapolis that had been notoriously serving queers for decades.

Apples & Oranges.

I know the comparison is a little unfair, but I'll take backburned fictional Calvin, Heath and Michael and the funny notion that gays are there to comfort straight girls over a real-life gay guy promoting the idea that being gay is a choice on a GAY TELEVISION CHANNEL any day. Let's face it: Calvin is NOT and never has been a major character on the show. He's along the same line of Dale. So I'm just happy he's there and it's not all about him being gay constantly. I also like the way Heath interacts with his fratboys. So IMHO: Huge arrow up for Greek. Shirts & Skins? 3'o clock arrow at best and I feel I'm really being gracious here.

More great stuff Brian

Especially about Judith Light. I have been working on a book about the Point Foundation scholars and got to spend several days with her and them last summer. She is totally unaffected, delightful, and very funny. I have seen her on the street a couple of times in NYC and she always greets me warmly and gives me a big hug. She has done yeoman work for that underappreciated foundation so I am glad she is finally getting her due -- and a good role on 'Betty.'

My new love interest isn't into QueerTV or Queer movies

Here I am the biggest Ugly Betty fan and I can't wait to see Lance shake a tailfeather on DWTS and Chad is just making me a bit moist thinking about him all laid in a hospital gown but the man I'm really digging in real life, doesn't share my taste of queertv or queer cinema. Can our relationship survive with us being torn on entertainment? He is really special and one of the most beautiful men, I have ever met, so I am praying that I can look over this one little flaw that he possess. It kinda sucks that I'm not able to vent to or talk about everything that is going on in the queer entertainment realm. I thank God for this website because I would really be LOST.
