News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (January 4, 2008)

WE KNOW WHO DAVID AND JAY ARE, BUT WHO THE HECK ARE MITCHELL AND WEBB?
Despite the writers' strike, David Letterman and Jay Leno returned to the airwaves this week with rather mixed reviews. David actually had his writers writing thanks to a deal he struck with the WGA while Jay was all on his own. For the record, I definitely prefer David to Jay any day of the week, and Jay's decision to have the notoriously homophobic presidential candidate Mike Huckabee as his first guest left a bad taste in my mouth.

Note, I'm not saying Jay isn't free to have whomever he wants and shouldn't have a breadth of guests, but Huckabee still maintains there was nothing wrong with his comments back in the 90s that AIDS patients should be quarantined, and today says gay marriage will end civilization and that gay behavior is aberrant and sinful. Oh, but he respects gays as people. Just people without the same civil rights as he has. What a toad.

The least Jay could've done is ask Huckabee about his beliefs so the millions of viewers watching would know that Huckabee isn't just an aw-shucks nice guy, but is also a rabid homophobe.

Frankly, Jay should stick with the Ass-Hoop as seen in this clip with Ed Asner. It's much more Jay's style.

As long as we're talking comedy, BBC America just announced another U.K. series is set to cross the pond. Called That Mitchell and Webb Look, this stars BAFTA and British Comedy Award winning comedians David Mitchell (pictured below left) and Robert Webb (below right).

I've only seen a few clips thus far, but the show appears to be gay-inclusive, sometimes in a completely incidental way that is great to see. This clip about an ice cream taster feeling a wee bit insecure in comparison to his partner includes a gay couple for no particular reason.

It's really great to see skits like this. The show also has an ongoing skit about two snooker commentators Ted and Peter, with Peter recently having come out as gay. As I said, I haven't seen too much more so its possible the show could include more stereotypical anti-gay humor as well. Perhaps some of our U.K. readers can enlighten us?

That Mitchell and Webb Look debuts February 8th, but don't worry — I'll keep you posted!
