News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (October 3, 2008)

IT'S NOT JUST HETEROSEXUAL MALES WHO ARE "VISIBLY UNCOMFORTABLE"
Did you like Borat? I’m on the fence. Sure, it was very funny, but it also made me uncomfortable, mostly for its illumination of the darker corners of the American psyche. Borat got ordinary people on camera and exposed their ugliest prejudices. It made me depressed to be an American. But I have to admit I did get a kick out of that silly lime green thong...

As you no doubt have heard, one of Sacha Baron Cohen’s other signature characters, Bruno, will be getting the big screen treatment and the project looks to precisely follow the Borat formula. But where the earlier film was predominantly focused on racism and sexism, Bruno holds up a mirror to gay panic.

Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt (yes, that really is the title) won’t be out until May of next year, but it has already generated a lot of free press for a series of stunts:

  • Bruno tries to interview Arnold Schwarzenegger — gets carted off by security.
  • Bruno actually succeeds in interviewing an unwitting Ben Affleck.
  • Bruno stages caged fighting matches in Arkansas and has the fighters suddenly stop fighting and begin making out — ugly riot ensues.
  • Bruno causes a scene in a crowded airport with a public display of affection.
  • Most recently, Bruno hijacks a Milan fashion show when he jumps onto the catwalk.

I'm not sure how crashing a Milan fashion show ties into making American straight males visibly uncomfortable. Perhaps that stunt was for the b-roll?

Here's a Bruno clip (from Da Ali G Show) where he interviews a Southern Baptist minister. It's the sort of thing you have to cover your eyes for and watch through your fingers:

To be honest, as funny and fearless as I think Sacha Baron Cohen is, I'm not sure I could sit through an entire movie of Bruno's reverse gay-baiting. I'm curious what AfterElton.com readers think. Is this a movie you're really looking forward to or, like me, does it make you a little squeamish?
