Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (October 3, 2008)
UGLY BETTY'S SUZUKI ST. PIERRE IS GETTING MARRIED! Congrats and best wishes to Alec and Jamie!
MAYBE SHE'LL BRING ALONG BILLY RAY That Miley is such a scamp. How much you want to bet she ditches her own party and crashes the Gay Days event?
Well folks, that's it for this edition. One last bit of bad news — Steven Frank's hilarious weekly Brothers & Sisters recap, which we normally run on Mondays, won't be up until Wednesday. Sorry about that. ABC normally gives us an advance screener but no such luck this week. Michael Jensen will be back next week covering this column. Until then, have yourself the BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER!

I can't say I'm looking forward to the next Sacha Baron Cohen outing, but I fear it will be hard to avoid. But I must disagree about Mr. Bean. He's given me some genuine laughs over the years. Witness this TV episode entitled "Merry Christmas, Mr. Bean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWtbJ1Uf-90. The bit with the turkey is just priceless. Parts 2 & 3 are also on YouTube. Fairypotter (85 points) (17 posts) on Fri, 2008-10-03 03:36.Really...honestly!!! I love Mr Bean so much I would have married him. For me he's so adorably, goofily cute. Plus I love Rowan Atkinson. I love everything that has him in it (I'll even marry Rowan ATkinson...he only has to say yes). Regarding Brothers & Sisters, what I fnd so annoting is how Robert McCallister is given center stage while Kevin and Tommy's spouses (and previously Sarah's husband) were all shoved to the side as mantlepieces. About Bruno, I am quite looking forward to it. Sacha is hilarious and isnt afraid of being politically incorrect. Havent seen ep 2 of Ugly Betty. I am hoping that they will eventually hook up Justin and Daniel Jr. Finally, really looking forward to Madonna's Filth & Wisdom. I hope its released on Itunes here in Oz same time as in US. Have a happy gay weekend (its a long sleazeball weekend for us here downunder).

I also loved the last epi of true blood, the scenes about Jason and his penis was not about sexual fantasies (in fact this is the first epi that Jason was fully dressed the entire time)but was about humor and in that sence it sucseded because i laughed
so hard."It doesn't have to be another Six Feet Under" yea lets hope it never becomes as BORING as that snoozefest.

Jonathan (915 points) (191 posts) on Fri, 2008-10-03 08:23.I'm not watching the show because I don't have HBO, but if they're following the books, Sookie will indeed dump Bill and hook up with Eric (though she doesn't dump him to hook up with Eric), but only briefly and only while Eric has amnesia and is an entirely different person. After that she winds up with a were-tiger. Of course, that goes to hell in short order as well. Sookie is romantically challenged.

Wolfi (467 points) (126 posts) on Fri, 2008-10-03 09:39.Is the arrow up for GREEK, the best scripted show on basic cable IMHO?
I quote from your reasoning for giving VERBOTENE LIEBE the arrow up, despite their total screentime between last Friday and today being around the 4 minute mark (wait, which other soap has a gay couple that only appeared for 4 minutes this week and got an arrow down... hmmm ;-)): ", because even when our German gay supercouple doesn’t have much of a storyline of their own they just both feel completely integrated into the show's other storylines."
That's exactly what's going with Calvin. And Heath. And Michael. Wait- a teenager-focused show that has THREE gay character walking around and that is not worth mentioning?
As for BROTHERS & SISTERS - the season premieres has focused on the core characters. I expect great things for Kevin & Scotty this season, but the siblings' other halves storylines never have been something to write home about. Julia, anyone??? I think even hardcore fans of the show see her sometimes and wonder who she is, until someone introduces her as Tommy's wife ;-)!

Allyndra (465 points) (94 posts) on Fri, 2008-10-03 11:20.I was really upset when I heard that Miley Cyrus was grinching Gay Day at WDW. I worked there when I was younger, and Gay Day was a tradition, like the Christian teenagers' Night of Joy. (Guess which group had more disruptive behavior and public indecency. It wasn't the one wearing red shirts.) It makes me sad to think of them getting shuffled out the gates to make way for Miley, especially since Pleasure Island is closed now, putting the kabosh on what used to be the traditional night time celebration.
I believe this is Disneyland, not Walt Disney WorldSubmitted by
Joseph (7150 points) (1457 posts) on Fri, 2008-10-03 11:31.The Miley Cyrus event is happening at Disneyland in California; their Gay Days occur in October. The Gay Days at Walt Disney World in Florida occur in June. You worked there, too? I was at WDW in the early '90s, and, yeah, the Night of Joy patrons were far more disruptive than the Gay Days crowd. I'm very sad about Pleasure Island closing--man, the memories I have of that place! Check out my blog: http://radicalsexy.blogspot.com/ Well, if it's Disneyland itSubmitted by
Allyndra (465 points) (94 posts) on Fri, 2008-10-03 12:38.Well, if it's Disneyland it doesn't impinge on my nostalgia as badly, but it still sucks. I was at WDW from 1996-1999. I remember the people working Night of Joy always had to be warned ahead of time about the kids who would sneak away from the Christian rock concerts to have sex in the bushes. I was sad about Pleasure Island closing, too. I think they're going to turn it into more shopping, like the Marketplace, which just sounds lame. I loved the Comedy Warehouse and the Adventurers Club, and 8TRAX was my first ever dance-club experience. ![]() NUKE VERSUS CALVIN (et al) HUNH?Submitted by

seanb (1479 points) (306 posts) on Fri, 2008-10-03 13:17.I thought I was the only one who saw that or felt that way. I pretty much agree with your well expressed thoughts. I'm upset with ATWT, but because of the amateurish writing and dumb plotting. Oddly, the Nuke stuff generally is better written than many of the other plotlines. (The Paul/James/Meg thing was laughable.) I'm fairly new to the site, but I recall seeing comments from people about how they would be having sex all the time if they were in Luke's shoes, and would be sleeping with Reg, and Noah, and Casey, and all the gay guys in the hot tub. And then the same people turn around and complain that people think being gay is all about sex....
ATWT can't do right.Submitted by
Wolfi (467 points) (126 posts) on Fri, 2008-10-03 13:53.I think the reason there is a double standard is that the IMPLICATION is enough. There's no denying that even on VERBOTENE LIEBE or HOLLYOAKS we have never actually SEEN anyone engaging in a sexual situation that went beyond a kiss. The fact is: None of those shows have shied away from implicating that two young men in their late teens or early 20s that are in a relationship would have sex with each other and frequently. The same with Calvin, who may not get the same amount of screentime AS THE CORE CHARACTERS ON THE SHOW (let's face it - Calvin is 2nd row at best). The fact is that the show does not shy away from the fact that an attractive out college student would have an active sex life. In a way, all ATWT would have to do is have Luke and Noah lie in bed together after a commercial break, half naked and have one say: 'That was great.' And we'd be done with it. I'll be the first to say that I find AfterElton's continous attacks against Nuke to be getting tired. Yes, ATWT has done a lot wrong in the past - but at the end of the day, Luke and Noah have been together continously for over 1 year, the characters show each other they are deeply in love and the actors have chemistry beyond belief. So what if there entire screentime this week was only 4 minutes? That's almost 9% of the actual run time without commercials. Not too shabby for a show that has so many parallel storylines to get through in its timeslot. -- Well, in all fairness andSubmitted by
zanefan (1416 points) (327 posts) on Fri, 2008-10-03 14:42.Well, in all fairness and in spite of the volume of coverage given to shows like ATWT, AfterElton (like many publications, both online and paper) still tends to have a level of contempt toward soaps. I've commented on this in the past. There's a sense of "gosh, this show's really terrible and we know NO ONE really watches it and/or takes it seriously, but there's A GAY on it, so we kinda sorta have to cover it..." It kind of makes me wonder if it might be time for a semi-regular column on AfterElton geared toward serial drama (kind of like the Gay Geek, who treats all things geekish with a level of respect and admiration...) Trust me, there's a LOT of gay men interested in the art and history of the soap genre.

Joseph (7150 points) (1457 posts) on Fri, 2008-10-03 15:50.A column or a vlog devoted to the gay soap characters could be a terrific idea, especially with the return of Bianca on All My Children and the possibility of Kyle moving up from the Night Shift to the daily General Hospital; that would be 3 shows with gay characters, with occasional comments about Verbotene Liebe.... Multi-Region DVD playersSubmitted by
YankeeMate (80 points) (20 posts) on Fri, 2008-10-03 20:32.If there's a DVD-Rom in your computer, you already have a multi-region DVD player. I've ordered tons of international DVDs (like the Bionic Woman seasons) that have never been released in the States. View, baby, view!
Just be careful, though, because there's a limited number of times one can switch back and forth between regions before the player "locks" itself into one permanent region. I'd reserve playing domestic DVDs on your stand-alone player and using your DVD-Rom for playing one particular region. Unless you have multiple DVD-Rom's then you can reserve a different region for each Rom. Yep, you're tied to the PC to watch Australian Kath & Kim but if you're spending all your free time hunting YouTube for viral videos, might as well pop in one of those unreleased in the States Footballers Wives DVDs and up the picture quality. Frank (635 points) (128 posts) on Sat, 2008-10-04 05:39.I don't know what this comment is refering to, but you just have to use the VLC media player for watching DVDs on your computer and you don't have a problem with any regional codes anymore. I haven't even installed a DVD player on my comps. Fortunately, in Germany we don't have that problem because pretty much every DVD player you can bye over here is set on Code 0 these days even though they don't announce it because the movie production companies don't like that. Fredo777 (245 points) (65 posts) on Sat, 2008-10-04 13:45.I loved this week's Ugly Betty + agree that the premier was lackluster. Eddie Cibrian is foine. I do hope they keep him around for a while, though I hate that his character's a cheating bastard. Feh.
Still, I forgive him that for the same reason that I forgive JDMA for not always being at its best: because I'm a shallow bitch. Not really, but I am impressed enough with sexy guys to put up with a bit of crap.
As for ATWT, I love Luke's new haircut. It's rock star sexy. I would also like to see some more intimacy between Nuke, though. I'm not sure if this was already brought up a few weeks back but I also wish that the writers had taken the opportunity to have Nuke attend Allison + Aaron's wedding, sharing a romantic moment where they mentioned that maybe one day they'd be getting married. It would have been very timely + relevant to the state of things in Cali now (Prop 8).
On Project Runway, Jerell is a trip. I loved his catty line last episode about Kenley wanting his tulle (I'm paraphrasing): "...she set her eyes down on that tulle on MY table, but it was not going down like that..." Hilarious. I truly wish they had given Kenley the boot this week. Oh well.
Dancing With The Stars: I'm voting every week for Lance + Lacey (I'm a fan of Lacey's because I saw her on SYTYCD? + dug her moves on that show, too). Lance, as my favorite "hag" pointed out, has gotten hotter since he came out. Mayhaps it's just the added confidence that comes with being comfortable in one's own skin. At any rate, I think they're cute together + like the energy they bring to the show (despite Len's constant hating).
Admittedly, I watch entirely too much TV + could rant + rave more but I'll leave it at that (for now). Eugene Hutz with Madonna directing??Submitted by

I am looking foward to seeing this film and thank you soo much for making my day. Not sure if Madonna is a great director but we'll see. She's amazing anyway. =] The priest made me cringe. If his church is really the way he is, I rather live a sinful and ungodly life.
