News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (October 10, 2008)

ANSWER: DAVID FOLEY AND DAVID BLUE
QUESTION: NAME TWO DAVIDS PLAYING GAY ON ABC

Great news for you Ugly Betty fans pining for the return of David Blue as Cliff, Marc's love interest! He's back as of the October 30th episode when he drops by Mode for a fashion shoot.

And for those of you wanting Uncle Saul to have something to do other than glower at Holly on Brothers & Sisters, an upcoming episode is going to have one of Saul's nephews setting him up on a blind date with Dave Foley!

That ought to be interesting to watch as Dave definitely doesn't seem like Saul's type. But lest you get your hopes up that Dave's character becomes Saul's love interest, word is that Dave only sticks around for one episode. So I guess it won't exactly turn out to be a love match. Some of you might recall that this won't be Foley's first time playing a gay love interest on a hit show. He played Stuart Lamarck on five episodes of Will & Grace as Jack's boyfriend.

THINK OF IT AS INDIA'S I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY. BUT HOPEFULLY BETTER
Next month brings us Bollywood's first big "gay" film Dostana, about two straight fellows — played by Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham — who pretend to be gay in order to rent an apartment in Miami. Complications ensue when the apartment owner's niece (Priyanka Chopra) falls for one of them and then Abhi, an actual gay guy (Bobby Deol) falls for the other one. I know, I know. It sounds like a bad episode of Three's Company.

An Indian website has posted a clip of the stars and director talking about the movie.

If this were an American movie, I'd be annoyed as all get out about the dancing around the gay stuff, but given this is a Bollywood film and India is still quite conservative, I think there is actually a lot to admire here. While much of the promotional material does focus on the heterosexual aspect of the movie, the principal's involved aren't shying away from discussing the fact that it contains gay content. About the two men's relationship Abraham said, "There is amazing chemistry between the three of us and more specifically between me and Abhishek and that's what people have to look out for."

Said Karan Johar, the film's producer, "Dostana is a romance. It's more about the chemistry between Abhishek and John than their chemistry with Priyanka. Of course Priyanka has a huge part to play. It's a romantic comedy with a big edge. The edge is the gay angle which I believe we have pulled off with a certain amount of dignity and humour."

It remains to be seen how much dignity is actually involved and I'm feeling cautious as so far we haven't seen much about Abhi; and given that I've seen his part referred to as a "cameo", I doubt it'll be much and worry it'll be a cliche.

Nonetheless, given that Hollywood is still producing dreck like Chuck and Larry, I can't be too hard on Bollywood for not having yet made their own Brokeback Mountain. Then there is the fact that John Abraham is hot and the movie doesn't look to be skimping on the beefcake any!

John Abraham looking much, much hotter than either Adam Sandler or Kevin James could ever hope!
