Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (October 10, 2008)
MY MARCUS WAS NAMED DAVID. SO DOES THAT MAKE US DAMIKE? OR MICHAVID?
Charm on Survivor; Gabon, Robert Sean Leonard and Hugh Laurie A reader commented they found it rather pathetic that Charlie was being so open about his crush on Marcus and that got my inner Carrie Bradshaw wondering, "In 2008, is it okay for a gay guy to openly crush on a straight guy?" I suspect this is relevant to many gay men at some point in their lives and the answer has obviously changed over time. In the late 80's, I was totally in love with a straight guy named David, but I wasn't out to him or anyone else at the time. Did he suspect I might be gay and in love with him? Possibly. Was my falling for him bad for me since there was precious little chance he'd ever return my affection? It certainly was frustrating and even heartbreaking to a certain extent, but I'd also argue it helped get me used to my feelings for guys. I'd also posit that the fact he couldn't reciprocate my feelings spurred me to get on with coming out so I could find a guy who would. So what do you think? Is it bad to crush on a straight guy?
