News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (October 10, 2008)

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!
This week a British "newspaper" claimed that a same-sex kiss on the British show Eastenders' nearly caused a riot of angry Englishmen to burn down BBC headquarters. Turns out the complaints weren't that bad and the BBC basically told irate viewers they were a bunch of wankers should get over themselves. Or something like that. BTW, here is the kiss that supposedly "shocked" those delicate English sensibilities.

Outsports.com had a couple of interesting items this week. First up, the bad. Perhaps some of those upset about the gay kiss on Eastenders were the same ones hurling anti-gay slurs at English soccer player Sol Campbell. It seems fans angry about Campbell's switching teams (soccer teams! Campbell is straight) decided homophobia is the proper payback so they chanted homophobic comments during a recent match. Looks like the Brits didn't ships all their louts off to Australia back in the day.

In better news, Outsports also reported on Jamal Brown, a recent Dartmouth College graduate who shared his very different experience after coming out to his track and field teammates. But who knows what might have happened had he transferred schools before graduating. I hear those Ivy Leaguers can be brutal when they want to.

By the way, have you donated to No on 8 yet? No. Sigh. The Flying Monkeys are getting very upset. Donate now! Speaking of No on 8, Rod 2.0 noted that the cast of Noah's Arc recently held a fundraiser in Oakland to help get the word out. Doug Spearman, Darryl Stephens, Jensen Atwood and Rodney Chester all did their part to help out.

Speaking of Darryl Stephens, did you catch his recent Instinct cover? The recently out actor discussed the dilemma's faced by out actors, not to mention out African-American actors. Said Stephens:

I’ve read a lot of very negative responses, not necessarily to my work, but to my choices, from gay bloggers. There is a lot of hypocrisy in the criticism from the people who just don’t know what it’s like to put yourself out there. It’s f**king scary. It’s not like sitting at home on your computer.

Rod over at Rod 2.0 says Stephens has a valid point but also points out the irony of a show considered groundbreaking in its portrayal of gay men of color starring closeted men of color.

Speaking of actors of color, The New York Times Magazine did an indepth profile of Queen Latifah last weekend and when the subject of her sexual orientation came up, Latifah said:

I don't have a problem discussing the topic of somebody being gay, but I do have a problem discussing my personal life. You don't get that part of me. Sorry. We're not discussing it in our meetings, we're not discussing it at Cover Girl...nobody gets that.

Backing away from the angry queen...

And speaking of The New York Times, they recently did a story on straight men coming out about loving cats. That's great and all, but I want to know how they know that. Is there a question on the census I missed?

Finally, AfterElton.com reader Randommer tipped me off that Ireland's RTE has been running a new series called Raw that is gay inclusive. So I popped over there today to watch a few episodes, but you can only watch if you live in Ireland. Boo, RTE! Anyway, here is a pic of the gay characters Geoff (Damon Gameau) and Pavel (Krystof Hadek).

Geoff and Pavel

I looked elsewhere for the episodes, but couldn't find. So AfterElton.com's Irish readers, what do you think of the show? And where can we watch it!

Oh, one more thing! Donate to No on 8!

Now I'll shut up so you can have the BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER!

No public canoodling

"The mountain has wings."

I'm with Dot on this one. No public canoodling! Of course, as there are no canoodles around, how's about a kiss, ducky? It's about time Eastenders got back to basics. I just wish Nigel Harman was able to join in the fun.

If you look at Bollywood

If you look at Bollywood, it's usually useful to substract 10-15 years when you try to judge the Zeitgeist. After all this is the same industry where several top billing box office stars (Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan) still refuse to kiss their female screen parterns on the lips (funnily there seems to be no rule against snorting their boobs). Where 10 years ago you had 30something actresses pretending to be virgins (because they weren't married) and it was generally assumed that an actress could not be married and still be a top billing actress (that audiences would find it improper if a married was pretending to be in love with her screen partners) and that having a baby would essentially end your career (because audiences would perceive her as a bad mother if she had small children and still worked).

Only recently (2003-now) actresses like Kajol and Aishwarya Rai have challenged the notion and begun to prove that you can be married (and even with kids) and still be a top billing actress. I still remember that a movie that came out in 2003 was advertised as a scandal movie because a straight couple was cohabiting before marriage (of course she gets pregnant and of course he marries her in the end), particularly because the movie was made by YashRaj which is sort of the Disney of BW. In short there are a lot of oddities to the Bollywood market that make it still quite different from Hollywood (though the difference seems to be shrinking).

That said, I'm very curious to see how Karan will be able to deliver on this promise of "dignity" (particularly since there are different reports now on what exactly the plot of the movie is; which isn't really unusual for BW, where people often aren't exactly sure till the opening day what exactly the movie is about). [Karan did say the movie was targeted more at the Indian communities in the US and UK rather than at rural India; And Karan most notably helped alternative gay/AIDs themed movie My Brother Nikhil find a distributor within India: [lead actor] Sanjay is a good friend of Karan Johar, an icon in mainstream commercial Indian cinema, who was one of the first people to have seen the rough edit of the film.

I remember waiting anxiously outside the edit room. I must have smoked at least 20 cigarettes, I was so nervous. But he came out and congratulated me and said that he was so moved during the last 20 minutes he cried.

He immediately called Adi ([major producer of YashRaj] Aditya Chopra) and recommended the film to him. Adi saw the film on VHS and the next day, he agreed to distribute the film nationally. In that sense, people have come forward to help the film and having a Yash Raj banner backing the film gives it reach and respectability no one else could offer us. http://www.rediff.com/movies/2005/mar/23onir.htm]

At the very least I'm up for seeing John Abraham in a cute sailor suit. And I'll definitely be watching to see how a movie like this does at the box office (regardless of how gay it ends up being, the gay angle was openly being played up by the promos from the start).

Despite Ralph Fiennes' first

Despite Ralph Fiennes' first name being pronounced "Rafe", I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be spelled like that.
Michael Jensen's picture

Sign number 10 Michael was still

writing the column at 10 PM. He spells Ralph Fiennes name Rafe even though he knows better. Thanks for the catch.
Darrien's picture

Pretentiousness or what?

Spelling it Ralph and pronouncing it 'Rafe' is an affectation of the upper, upper-middle and associated wannabe British classes. Fiennes' full family name is Twisteleton-Wickham-Fiennes (possibly without the hyphens) and they seem to be a fairly upper-middle class lot (explorers, publishers, airline chairmen, etc), the chances are that Mr Fiennes is declaring his class roots proudly. An alternative view might be that he and his ilk never managed to finish that adult literacy class...

Great BGWE, and great post LolaRuns!

In addition re: Bollywood, I just have to say the understatement of the week award in the article was saying India is "still quite conservative".... in addition to the items listed above by LolaRuns which we would consider not quite conservative, but spectacularly conservative, is this wee fact:

BEING GAY IS ILLEGAL IN INDIA.

The government quashed an effort to decriminalize homosexuality just 2 weeks ago.

http://www.hindustantimes.com/StoryPage/StoryPage.aspx?sectionName=&id=edfaa62f-698c-4cc5-b1b2-6bd0e0f26aa3&&Headline=Centre+against+legalising+homosexuality&strParent=strParentID

so ANY movie in Bollywood that is inclusive in any measure gets a big thumbs up!

Charm, huh? well, I guess that's better than Charcus or Marlie.

And can I just say for the record that Rob Lowe is looking mighty fine!

don't get hopes too high for Dostana

Bollywood comedies have a tendancy towards slapstick humour and easy targets. I don't know what the overall message of the movie will be, and it might be something good. However, I'm preparing myself for a lot of cringeworthy moments.
LolaRuns's picture

Karan's Kal Ho Na Ho

I actually thought that the humor in Karan's Kal Ho Na Ho (the one where Preity Zinta is torn between Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan in New York) was actually quite well done. And since Karan has oversight over this project and it is explicitly targeted at NRIs I have hope that it will be more KHNH type humor than Johnny Lever/Bobby Darling type humor, regardless of what the good or less good message is.

About RAW.

Sorry about the geoblock, Though I have to say I never actually knew you could watch the episodes online till you pointed it out. It must be in Beta stages or something. Anyway I might have missed an Episode or Two recently but I did like what I saw. It's a lot more confident about itself than most of our programming output, which tends to feel very insecure about itself, and it's much better directed too. Geoff and Pavel do seem to have an interesting relationship growing. Plot-wise It's all mostly stuff you'll have seen in better shows like This Life or something a decade ago though.
Randommer's picture

Heh. I only know it's

Heh. I only know it's online because I don't have a TV anymore. Their relationship kind of went into a nosedive this week, but that was mainly Geoff's fault (and Mal).

Skins

I've been won over by Skins, and I thought Anwar's father was awesome. His reaction to Maxxie aside, I was thrilled to see a Muslim man of deep faith shown as human, annoying his son and doting on his wife and sneering at his brother-in-law. There are webisodes available, called Unseen Skins episodes, which are worth watching. The first series doesn't have much Maxxie (although the Careers Advice ones are hilarious and worth watching regardless of being Maxxie-less), except for a cute moment in the 4th one. Series 2 has some really good Maxxie webisodes, but they also have spoilers for series 2 of the show.

Maxxie is in the Secret Party, and thanks to the equal opportunity approach to random drunken hooking up, he gets to make out at the party like everyone else.

You are right about the Unseen Skins

But the best real Skins is coming up, The first episode of the second season is so sweet and Maxxie's Dad totally rocks!

Definitely Need More Slice of Life Gay Representation

I agree with Michael wholeheartedly that there needs to be way more ordinary slice of life gay representation where gay couples are shown matter of factly just living life to the fullest, being romantic and all the other moments straight couples take for granted, like sitting in bath tubs watching the sunset in a Viagra commercial (okay, just kidding on that example, sort of. :P Yet those types of situations are routine for heteros in media but rare for gay couples). It's not surprising many str8 folks view "gay" as only meaning "sex" because that's what media too often reduces it to mean.

When was the last time you saw a gay couple sitting on a porch swing just holding hands and enjoying an afternoon with friends and relatives? I particularly enjoy movies that thoughtfully show slices of life, like when The Family Stone shows the gay son and his husband just walking hand-in-hand out in a winter wonderland at night.

Kevin James

"John Abraham looking much, much hotter than either Adam Sandler or Kevin James could ever hope!"

I strongly have to disagree. Abraham looks like one of the typical boring shower gel models who have never captured my interest while Kevin James is quite hot. Really bad choice of film projects and lame sitcom aside he is not bad to look at.

Darrien's picture

He started out as a model

John Abraham used to be India's top-paid male model before he turned to acting, so there are a tremendous number of very modelly photos of him swanning around the internet - very likely including shower gel! As an actor, though, he's been trying to widen his range and (as far as Bollywood lets him) has succeeded in changing his image to look far more like a man and less like an object. If Bollywood ever gets round to making its own version of Brokeback Mountain, putting Abraham or Abichek Bachchan in there with Saif Ali Khan would guarantee a film with some excellent acting because they've all got the thespian chops and the edgy attitude to carry it off.

I love any article about Darryl Stephens

The man doesn't have to act. Just have him stand there and I'll give him an oscar. :) Eric

RAW IS A FABULOUS MINI SERIES

There is quite a lot of content that has to be cut out of the YouTube clips so I'd say send a personal message to TubedOutNow2 to inquire about the "less" editted Pavel and Geoff related clips that she couldn't post on YT due to content restrictions.

I'm 5 episodes in and already hoping the come up with a second series.

I'm already mad for Geoff and Pavel.

Great acting all around. Wonderful multi-ethnic, international cast.

Completely compelling characters and fabulous yet complex burgeoning gay love story.

CHEERS!
