Best. Gay. Week. Ever! Give Me Chocolate or I'll Cut You!

ANOTHER ONE TWO BITES THE DUST
After making it until nearly November without losing one of our new TV 'mos, the ax fell this week on not one, but two gay characters. Getting pinkslipped first was Alejo on ABC's The Whole Truth followed by Sam Adama on Caprica

And that just sucks IMHO. While neither show is perfect, I have to say it's disheartening to live in a world where Charlie Sheen gets to wreak havoc and Two and a Half Morons still continues to rake in bucks and ratings. Meanwhile, two of the more interesting and well-developed gay characters in quite some time can't even manage two dozen episodes between them.

But the news isn't all bad. As I mentioned in the last column, this week saw the addition of Jesse on HBO's In Treatment. Trust me when I say Jesse is going to make United States of Tara's Lionel look like a total piker when it comes to being a controversial, in-your-face gay character. If you don't get HBO (or even if you do, of course) check out our recap as presented by Ugly Betty's Justin Suarez, Glee's Kurt Hummel, plus United States of Tara's Marshall Gregson and his erstwhile boyfriend Lionel.

Other good news includes the fact that ABC ordered four more episodes of Brothers & Sisters for a full season order of 22 eps which should give Kevin and Scotty time to work out that little glitch in their relationship — namely that Scotty had an "oopsie" and cheated on Kevin who was pretty PO'd about the news. But the ABC press release for this week's episode says that it's ... Paige who helps bring them back together.

Hmm, that has me a little worried as it could go somewhere pretty saccharine, no? But as I've already said, I'm fine with this storyline and am curious to see where they go with it. (BTW, the Flying Monkey [aka Brent, my better half] and I  had a bet going on whether or not Scotty actually cheated and it looks I won. Not to gloat or anything...)

I've also been enjoying Showtime's The Big C with the amazing Laura Linney. Yes, that was Doctor Reid Oliver playing one half of a gay couple a few eps back. And while Newsweek's Ramin Setoodeh probably hasn't been buying it, I have to say that even though they are both gay, John Benjamin Hickey and Cynthia Nixon have been knocking it out of the park as a straight couple on the show.

And kudos to Mr. Hickey for having the cojones to show off his rocking bod!

And speaking of gay actors, this week I reported a tiny bit of scoop about Chad Allen appearing on this Sunday's episode of Dexter. Don't click if you don't want to be spoiled (though, to be honest it ain't exactly a huge spoiler).

Speaking of Chad, I just want to say how much it stinks that he isn't getting bigger parts than this. Here is a guy who has been an outspoken advocate of GLBT issues and is a damned good actor, and it's hard not to wonder if he hasn't been penalized for being so visible (after being outed back in the 80s).

There was a lot of discussion this week about Zachary Quinto's declining to address his sexual orientation when asked by the New York Times. That is certainly Quinto's right and we here at AfterElton.com firmly don't believe in outing in any way, so that's pretty much all of what I have to say about Quinto.

But I just as firmly believe that every GLBT person who is able to live a life today that is more free and open than ever before has an obligation to do their part to make things better for those who come after us.

That's why I'll always champion out actors like Allen and Cheyenne Jackson and Jonathan Groff, and won't spend much time thinking about those who benefit from the sacrifices made by others yet live in glass closets.

Next page! My new role model is Becky from Glee!
