Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (November 2, 2007)

FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE!
It's doubly a drag to report there is nothing to see at the box office this weekend as there so easily could have been. John Cusack's Martian Child is set to open nationwide and is based on the based-on-real-life story of the out writer David Gerrold of Star Trek fame. Alas, for a variety of reasons (that are disputed by various parties) the movie was sorta/kinda de-gayed when it was adapted from Gerrold's novelette. We wrote about the controversy here and again when we interviewed screenwriter Jon Tolins about the issue. Whatever the reason for the change it's a shame as the original story is about a single man's struggles as an adoptive parent — and a story about a gay parent would definitely have been something fresh.

Not a whole lot on DVD either. Project Runway: The Complete Third Season is out on Tuesday as a warm-up to Season 4 which launches this month. Also out is the indie flick Rock Haven which tells the tale of of 19-year-old Brady, a devout Christian boy who falls for his hunky neighbor. Hey, maybe that could be one of Be Real's stories!

Logo airs Alien Boot Camp tonight which includes the ten minute pilot for Tinseltown, the Henson Alternative show featuring the gay Muppets! I love the Muppets and always imagined Kermit was gay so it's great to finally have the real thing. Without further ado meet Bobby Vegan (left) and his partner Samson Knight (right).

Bobby is an actor, Samson a producer. One is "hammy", the other is "bull". Get it? Bobby originally found fame in the 1985 sitcom The Other White Meat and the two have been a couple for twenty years. Together they are raising their thirteen-year-old foster son Foster. I've no idea what Foster is — a frog? A pigeon? I don't much care, but I really hope this gets turned into a full series ASAP!

Also on the telly Friday night we've got a new episode of here! TV's Dante's Cove. Since you couldn't possibly be trying to follow the plot, I'll just give you the real skinny on what you want to know: Jensen Atwood gets buck naked in this ep. Check on Monday for our recap of the show!

Rufus Wainwright drops by Graham Norton's show on Saturday night. That could be interesting. Oh, and there's a new episode of Torchwood, but given that Jophn Barrowman was apparently out sick the week they filmed it, you should only bother if you're really into the show. As for me, I'm just hanging on until we get to the good stuff.

I've got some good news for gay fans of CBS' The Amazing Race. It turns out there is a gay male contestant on the show this year named Ari. (There is also a lesbian couple.)

Ari is twenty-years old, is a waiter in Long Beach and is competing with his best friend Staella. (No that's not a typo!) Ari's bio states he is "catty" and he says he is "mean, rude and hilarious, and enjoys dancing and talking trash to people." I thought Perez already had a show!

Something tells me Ari's going to go over just swell with the other contestants. Oh well, at least I have my excuse to watch now.

Sunday night also brings new episodes of Desperate Housewives including Bob and Lee all gussied up for Halloween and a new Brothers & Sisters. This week Kevin will likely help an old lady cross the street and take Sarah's garbage out.

Wednesday night is a new episode of The Sarah Silverman Program and then all gay Thursday brings us Ugly Betty, Survivor: China, Drawn Together, ER, and now possibly Smallville! What's a TV columnist supposed to do!

BTW. if you're getting frustrated by the recent slow pace of things with Nuke on As the World Turns, you might while away some time watching the story of Coronation Street's utterly adorable gay character Todd. We've written about him before (and just had the good news Todd looks like he's coming back), but some industrious person took the time to compile all of Todd's storyline into one long clip. Enjoy!

Now I'll shut up so you can have the BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER!

B&S can't win for losing

I thought some of the writers here last season complained about Kevin's stories being about his love life, Kevin being selfish, and now his stories are not about his love life and he is helping everyone, and people complain about that. I'm sure they will be back soon enough to Kevin being made to look like a jerk to prop up the sainted man in his life (with the way they deify the McCallister brothers). I agree with you about Todd on Coronation Street. He's adorable and has a good history with the show. How nice Amazing Race has a bad stereotype this season. Awful, awful cast.

Stereotypes

Doesn't it seem like every time we take a few steps forward (with Mark's new love interest on Ugly Betty, for instance) we take several steps back? We've got Chris Crocker getting his own show on Logo (I can see VH1 or MTV but Logo??) and the nasty stereotype on Amazing Race. Plus the highly unlikable gay couple on Desperate Housewives. Leave it Marc Cherry to bring a gay couple on the show and make them awful. Oy.

<p>On the bright side, I squealed a little when you mentioned Pushing Daisies. That and Dirty Sexy Money are my two favorite shows right now. I adore Daisies. Is it just me or does anyone else suspect Emerson (the detective) might be gay?

Right

Marc Cherry really does have a knack for reinforcing negative stereotypes about gay men and making people hate gay men. It's sad how shows run by gay men seem to be so anti-gay (Nip/Tuck, DH). At least we have Brothers & Sisters.

That was a dirty trick,

That was a dirty trick, springing a picture of Screaming Chris Crocker on us.

Thanks for the summary Michael

I am in a similar state of mind as Josh, stereotypes seem to abound in most of these stories. A catty, bitchy gay waiter, never met one of those in Toronto (hahaha). The gay couple in Desperate Housewives are not exactly positive role models for gay men, but then again I would not consider any of the straight people in that show exactly positive role models!

I used to consider Chris Crocker a somewhat (!) effeminate gay man, but in the latest photo if I did not know better I would swear he was a woman.

The latest reality show that Logo is considering putting on does sound kind of interesting, I have always wondered though why any sane person would want their most important life moments plastered all over the boob tube for others to gawk at.  Are they that desperate for attention and notoriety or is it money?

Cheers

JBE

Chris Crocker on Logo

The good news is that since it's on Logo nobody will see it. Thanks LOGO! You make the gay community proud each and every day!

Everything Doesn't Have to Be GAY

RE: Torchwood I'm not going to bash TW just because we haven't had a significant "Jack has a gay encounter" episode. This show is far more interesting than the one-note XFiles became. The nice thing about the show is that we aren't being given everything all at once, but they are slowly developing character. Owen had his gay moment early on, defining him mostly as a highly sexual individual; Gwen had her gay moment, albeit under the influence of alien persuasion; Tosh certainly had her gay moment, actually a whole episode worth; and we know that Jack will have his. Let's keep this show on the air, not just because of the gay content, but because it is good.

I didn't mean to imply I was bashing it just

because it isn't gay enough. I'm simply not enjoying the show itself much and without the gay aspect, I'm really having trouble finding a reason to keep watching. Last week's story with Suzie coming back didn't work for me. This week's didn't either with the way it ended. The only one I've truly enjoyed other than the first one is Countrycide. I know the show is working for some folks, but frankly I liked the X-Files way better.

Awesome V-Blog!

You could make some money with that and sell it to the Seattle Tourists Bureau. That was awesome. Now you have to come to Boston and come around with me to so we can do one for gay guys visiting Boston! :) Justin

Not the ''Smartest'' casting

I'm not sorry to see Jesse go on ''America's Most Smartest Model,'' but in truth, he should've never been on. All the other guys have washboard abs, so how mean is it to put Jesse in that company? And out of all the black male models they looked at, was Jesse really the best representative? Or was he just set up to fail for good TV? I blame the producers and whoever cast the show, which isn't exactly a bastion of diversity. Out of 16 models, there are only two blacks and maybe one Latina? And no gay men or women? (Or out ones?) Clearly, there are smart models out there, but I imagine the smarter ones chose to avoid getting cast here ... or the producers set out to showcase the dumber ones so it could ridicule them.

Coronation Street Clip

Thanks for posting the Todd/Karl Coronation Street Clip. The actors portraying the characters really had a nice chemistry and it was nice to see how the writers developed them as a couple and that was in 2004. Three years before Craig Dean met John-Paul McQueen on Hollyoaks. It just makes it all the more sad that here in America, soap opera viewers had to wait until the year 2007 in order to actually see a gay male character (regardless of age) have and/or pursue a romantic relationship with another gay male. I just hope that if and/or when the Writer's Guild strike is over, the writers have something more for the characters of Noah and Luke (and the viewing audience)in their relationship on As The World Turns.
