Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (December 7, 2007)

YOU FOLKS REALLY DON'T LIKE LENA, DO YOU?
Part of Dennis' very funny Brothers & Sisters recap this week included a poll presuming that if Kitty's wedding last week had ended with a Dynasty-type massacre, who would readers most have wanted to see survive?

Coming in dead last with less than 1% of folks wanting to see her live is poor Lena, the secretary/tramp steadily working her way through the Walker men. (Good luck with Kevin, Lena!). Not much of a surprise that Kevin and Scotty where the characters most folks wanted to see live with 15.3% and 14.9% of the votes respectively. But I was rather taken aback to see that poor Jason McCallister only garnered 4.91% of the total. That put him dead before Holly, Rebecca, Justin, Nora, Sarah, and Saul. That's gotta hurt!

One of the big concerns when Jason packed his bags for Malaysia was that Kevin was eventually going to cheat on him and ruin another relationship. In our poll last week most folks were glad to see them back together, but I'm curious as to whether folks think Kevin did something wrong or not.

Finally, it's going to be such a long wait until there is a new episode of Brothers & Sisters that I feel it's my duty to at least dole out some info to tide you over. First off, despite rumors to the contrary, Scotty will be appearing after episode 2.11. And here is an asterisk puzzle to keep you busy — but it's gonna be a hard one!

After ****** ************* tells ***** that ***** ***** him, Jason ********* *** ******* and *** *** have ** ***.

FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE!
I've already mentioned several times that The Golden Compass opens Friday with Ian McKellen as a talking polar bear. Woody Harrelson's The Walker also opens in limited release as does Rockmond Dunbar's Dirty Laundry. And I haven't heard much about Strength and Honor, but it does star Richard Chamberlain.

On Tuesday, Matt Damon fans have the DVD release of The Bourne Ultimatum to look forward to.

Honestly, the television pickings start to get a little thin from here until January unless you're into some animated specials and football games. Maybe you'll have to actually talk with your partner!

Friday night ABC's Women's Murder Club features a plot about a mudered drag queen. Presumably these are her friends. Notice I didn't say they were good drag queens.

(Photo Credit: Vivian Zink/ABC. Not to be copied.)

I bet it turns out the victim is a young fresh-faced thing new in town who happened to get a spot in the club's line-up impersonating Paris Hilton only to "accidentally" upstage the "star" attraction, an older drag queen, after tripping her and breaking her leg. Or am I confusing this with Showgirls?

On Saturday night Graham Norton welcomes the always interesting Glenn Close on his show. How I Met Your Mother has a new ep with the always watchable Neil Patrick Harris, then Tuesday brings us another new episode of guilty pleasure The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency.

Wednesday has a new ep of Project Runway and it's the one with the dramatic revelation by Jack. Maybe he'll be announcing he and Dale already broke up! There's also a new ep of the always of gay-interest Pushing Daisies that includes a part for Grant Shaud of Murphy Brown. I always had a bit of a crush on Miles Silverman.

Wednesday also brings us to sides of the cultural coin. On the lowbrow side (and I mean low-brow) is the CW's Crowned: Mother of All Crappy Reality Shows Pageants, a mother/daughter beauty pageant competition with Carson Kressley as one of the judges. Honestly Carson, wouldn't you rather keep your dignity and sell shoes?

If you're not trying to massacre your brain cells by the gazillion you might instead check out PBS' P.O.V. series featuring the documentary by Frieda Lee Mock about the always wondrous Tony Kushner. Called Wrestling with Angels, the program delves into the life and brain of Kushner and you'll be glad you watched it.

No Ugly Betty on Thursday, but we do have the first of the final three episodes of Survivor: China as Big Gay Todd edges ever closer to that million bucks!

Now I'll shut up so you can have the BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER!

I must admit, he does do a good job...

...at playing someone you love to hate.

Brian Kinney

I agree! Brian Kinney was the best gay character of all time. He wasn't an effeminate stereotype but rather a forceful dynamic successful businessman with a heart that he kept carefully hidden. His character was as three-dimensional as any gay character I've ever seen. That show was a breakthrough in countless ways.

A better way to protect spoilers and still allow people who want to be spoiled to view them is to have the spoiler text the same color as the background and then all people have to do is highlight the hidden text with their cursor.______________________________________________________ Come on Michael, tell us what happens with Jason and Kevin. Or more importantly, does Kevin do something deliciously cruel to the insufferable Senator McAllister?__________________________________________________ Brian Kinney was a cartoon. I'm sure many gay men would like to be him in regards to the unfettered promiscuity, but that kind of person almost never happens. I mean the way he dismissed last night's conquests the next morning was really graceless and ultimately tedious. They were nothing more than sexual devices to him. Also, I never found Brian Kinney to be complex at all, in fact, I thought he was boring. I mean how often did he change his routine on that show?________________________________________________________ Speaking of cartoons, Jack McFarlane, anyone? He was the caricature to end all caricatures. Yes, that's a bad thing.

.......

alright...brian was a smart ass, spoke his mind...and yeah, didn't care what people thought. I actually admire people like that....ok, being a smart ass isn't a great quality..but sometimes i thought his remarks were quite funny...he did cross the lines sometimes and there were times i thought "oh geez, shut up..." - -

i do wish he had ditched justin for good though. like...forever, goodbye. please say i am not the only one who was extremely annoyed by justin...

Jon's picture

He very much cared what people thought

No one is more insecure than an "I don't care" type of person. He was nasty and cruel to his friends, flaunted himself to them, and paraded his boring relationship with the twink precisely to get a reaction.

I never fail to be amused at the type of poor or boring characters can get praise as long as they are not effeminate.

Liz T's picture

umm....

you said, "No one is more insecure than an "I don't care" type of person"

tell me HOW does that make someone insecure? i AM that kind of person and i feel secure with who i am...i didn't see brian as insecure....actually, if there was one thing he was insecure about, it was about him being a good father or not to gus. with that aside, he seemed fine with who he was as a person. er, i know he was also insecure about his age as well. ok, other than that....i can't think of anything else.

Brian's Securities and Insecurities

He was secure in his:

1. Looks.

2. Sexuality and sexual prowess.

3. Career (he was good at what he did I must admit).

4. Taste (he simply bought very expensive stuff knowing gays would be impressed by that, can't say that has ever interested me but to each his own).

He was insecure due to:

1.  Fear of getting old and unattractive (common one that).

2.  Being emotionally vulnerable or involved with someone else (family background).

3.  To certain extent being a father (another common one, likely did not want to repeat his father's mistakes).

Overall I felt he was more secure than insecure.  I have met people who would score 0/7 on the above characteristics!  One reason why he could be so self-centred and obnoxious was the fact that the sub-culture he lived in (the big city gay culture) is obssessed with appearance and sex (the more the merrier).  He received a lot of positive feedback from other guys and frankly it went to his "head" (and other parts as well).  This is a characteristic I have seen with some frequency in the gay fast lane.  Tragically, sometimes these people can come to a less than happy end.  One of the best looking guys in Toronto in the early 90's is now so changed in appearance I supposedly would not even recognize him (AIDS) even though he is only in his early 40's.  Fortunately, Brian Kinney managed to aviod that bullet.

Cheers

Is this accurate?

You criticize Kevin for saying he isn't sure what his relationship with Scotty is, but you don't mention that Scotty is the one who told him he wanted to make sure the relationship went slow and had no real labels. Then we get a poll about whether Kevin was wrong to sleep with Scotty, two weeks after the episode aired. I know Kevin is not a saint, but he's not that terrible. I guess I should be happy things here have improved from some of the invective hurled at him last season.

Gale Harold must be loving all of this!

All of this Brian Kinney talk prompted me to throw in a QAF DVD (season 3, the peak.) It confirmed for me what I've said elsewhere on AfterElton. That character is just fascinating. Dark, mysterious, why is he the way he is? Those characters, the one you have to figure out for yourself, without the writers handing you the answers, are always intriguing.

But I think more than anything, I'm fond of that character because of Gale's insane acting capabilities. I re-watched the scene where Brian orders a whore in the physical likeness of Justin. There is so much going on in Gale's eyes. Without saying a word, Brian spoke volumes (gently stroking the escort's blonde hair, the wanting that spills out of Gale's facial expressions). Disaffected and longing, wow. Other actors on that show could do 2 minute monologues and be nowhere near as captivating. If anybody else had played Brian, we may have never have liked this character as some of us do. I'm glad I reminded myself as to why I'm a believer.

Gabriella's picture

I was actually pretty happy

I was actually pretty happy to see Brian Kinney topping the poll as he is one of my favorite gay characters of all time too. He's a better representation of gay men than... let's say- an effeminate Jack MacFarland.

So when is Brothers & Sisters airing anyway? I cant wait to see the return of Eric Winter. I hope him and Kevin get back together!

Brian Kinney

The thing that has to be considered about Brian Kinney/Gale Harold, is that he has an enormous female fanbase as well! And I'm talking crazy, "He's the only man on the planet" kind of fans! Queer as Folk also has has huge international following, with fan pages and fan communities all over the world.

Trust me, I'm on a German QaF board, for example, and there are some people (especially women) who get seriously crazy about those actors, especially about Gale Harold! And while I didn't vote for him, I know of many who did, because the poll was mentioned on our message board and when he's up for any poll, our users are sure to vote for him.

I think many QaF boards around the world probably drew attention to this poll, so I'm not at all surprised, actually, to see Brain Kinney on top of this list! I'm not necessarily a fan of his, but like I said, to many of my fellow female Qaf fans he's the hottest thing since bread came sliced ;-)

Kanye West...WTF

wait a second...Kanye West GQ man of the year...ARe u kidding me? That big baby whiner...always complaining about how hard he works and how he deserves to win grammy awards...that Kanye West. He can't even come up with anything original. The song Stronger is a rip off of Daft Punk. Give me a break!!
Art's picture

What do you want broken?

OF COURSE HE'S GOING TO THROW A FIT!!!! HIS MUSIC IS A MILLION TIMES BETTER THAN THE PEOPLE HE LOSES TOO!!! You remember waaaaay back in 2004 when he lost the AMA award for Best New Artist to Gretchen 'Redneck Women' Wilson? What the hell has she done lately? Don't worry, I'll wait for the answer.

Stronger is not a 'rip-off' of 'Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger', it contains an interpolation of it. In order to do that, West had to get the express permission of Daft Punk, and they were more than willing to let him and he thanked them by PUTTING THEM IN THE STRONGER VIDEO!!!!

Kanye West is the most popular rapper/artist in America right now and he's taken an incredibly defensive stance for the gay community, while being A RAPPER. Credit must be given there.

And, oh, yeah, he's made some of the decade's most popular music.

Number 1's he's either produced, rapped on or both:

Izzo by Jay-Z, Stand Up by Ludacris, Slow Jamz by Twista & Jamie Foxx, Gold Digger and Stronger by himself. Let's see....thats 5 number ones.

Then, lets go and look at other hits he's done: Good Life by Kanye West, You Don't Know My Name by Alicia Keys, Go! & The Corner by Common, Used to Love U by John Legend, Dreams by The Game, 03 Bonnie & Clyde by Jay-Z and Jesus Walks
by Kanye West.

He is changing what hip hop looks and sounds like and has brought artists like John Legend, Common, Lupe Fiasco and Consequence to popularity. He's more than deserved every award he's lost, and if he doesn't win the Grammy for Album of the Year 2007, it will be a complete travesty.

Kanye West is amazingly talented. In the words of former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka, get your mouth shut.

I moved a few months ago and no longer get BBCA. I am a huge James Marsters fan and completely bummed that I won't be able to see him on Torchwood. Would you guys be able to post video clips of his episodes or at least links to video clips?

Television

You didn't mention American Dad in the gay-content shows. They had a surrogate episode last week and tonight they had one on the Log Cabin Republicans. It was kind of poking fun at stereotypes, but sent the message that being gay is not a choice, being a republican/democrat is (it also poked fun at log cabin republicans). It was amusing because it expressed some of my own thoughts. I wonder if the writers are democrats. It was an interesting episode. -----I also want to comment on Brian Kinney being #1 on the list. I get it, he was very charismatic. I believe he was complicated because he acted like he didn't care, but then showed glimpses of caring. He had this hardness that some can relate to, but not pull off themselves. You never really knew him, even when you thought he was a jerk. I also think a BIG part of it has to do with Gale Harold. He could say and express so much with just his eyes and mouth, adding another dimension beyond just the lines. The character of Brian would not have had the draw it did with another actor in the role.

Most of those who find

Most of those who find fault with Brian Kinney find fault with sexuality. They say that he used people, that he was nasty to his friends. Why don't you all man up and accept the fact that the people in his life either found him worth the hassle or that they were in fact the ones at fault. What is up with this blame culture that we live in? If you get used, you let it happen. If you endure nastiness and insults on a continual basis, aren't you the misogynist? Brian Kinney didn't ruin lives. Brian Kinney lived his own life without apology. Those who may have been bulldozed in his path had fair enough warning of his approach. They chose to stand in the way.
JBE's picture

That sounds

to me like blaming the victim.  Hopefully you won't be saying next that some gays deserved to be bashed because they act effeminantly.  The point I am trying to make is Brian Kinney was responsible for his behaviour towards other people, living ones life without apology frankly to my mind amounts to living a selfish and self-centred existence.  Then again our society awards people like that so I should not be surprised that some people indulge in the behaviour.  The only redeeming feature about the character is that he evolved near the end of the show, he actually started growing up.

I have managed to avoid for the most part the Brian Kinney's of the world.  I would rather surround myself with human beings, not egocentric individuals that constantly need their self-esteem stoked.

Cheers

Editor Could Use One

Between your clumsy, feeble reference to "stolen elections" and exemplary intolerant attack on the Catholic League's warning about "The Golden Compass," you offered this typo: "the religioous aspect." FYI, Catholics are not "fundies."

On page 5 you are missing an important verb in this sentence: "Can you believe my partner doesn't he's the least bit adorable?" Freudian slip?

I recall another typo somewhere in your posting but it isn't my job to find them all.  I'm not the editor.
Lyle Masaki's picture

Hmmm

Could you point to where Catholics (a group that includes people with a diverse variety of views on various issues, even if the major media only likes to give one side focus) were called fundies? I see talk of some religious leaders, the ones objecting to Pullman's books, but I'm having trouble seeing where Catholics in general are called fundies. I don't believe the Catholic League (or specifically its leader William Donohoe, who I do think is a fundie) speaks for what all Catholics are thinking and I think it's completely wrong to suggest that calling Donohoe a fundie is calling Catholics in general fundies.
Michael Jensen's picture

Thanks so much for pointing out the typos.

I really appreciate that.

BTW, your assertion that I call all Catholic fundies is way off base. What I said was "What you might not know is that the movie has the panties of certain religious fundies wadded up more tightly than Joan Rivers' forehead."

So you'll notice not only did I not call Catholics fundies, I went out of my way to say "certain" religious fundies thereby acknowledging that not all religious fundamentalists are attacking the movie.

And if you happen to remember that other typo please be sure to let me know so I can fix.
