Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (February 15, 2008)
AND YOU THOUGHT THE "MISTLETOE" MOMENT WAS BAD While I have frequently reminded folks that CBS' ATWT is the only current American soap opera with gay teen characters, much less a gay teen couple, and that they have done a lot of things right, I am totally baffled as to why the show would include a Nuke storyline along with four straight couples only to then not have Luke and Noah kiss while every other couple did. Especially when they came thisclose to kissing. It seems utterly bizarre and makes it seem like that they are terrified of a kiss.
Still, the episode did include Noah giving Luke a card saying "You're the best thing that ever happened to me". It then proceeded to have them stroll about with their arms around each other, had them meet cute in an alternative timeline, walk around Greenwich Village including along "Gay" street, come out to each other, and even promise to wait for each other until Noah got out of the Navy. I mean that whole segment was pretty darn romantic. Clearly the show's writers must have been told not to show any more kisses and are pushing back as hard as they can with "suggestive" sandwich talk and near miss kisses. I'd ask ATWT about it, but given the answers I got to my last set of questions for How has ATWT handled its gay storyline, I can't say I see much point. Some folks have called for us to stop liveblogging and/or covering the show, but I don't see that point to that. I'd say it's our job to keep covering what the show is doing right (and it is doing some stuff right) and what it is doing wrong — like chickening out over kisses. But no doubt some folks will stop watching and I'm curious to find out how many so here is a poll about just that.
