Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (March 21, 2008)
FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE! Bill Murphy, Matthew Montgomery
Friday night brings two new series to here! First up we've got Cover Guy which is being touted as It’s America’s Next Top Model for us 'mos. Then there is The Ben and Dave Show, which is a radio talk show that you can watch. I'm sure it probably works great as a radio show, but as a television show? Um, not so much. Also on Friday night is another episode of Lifetime's Your Mama Don't Dance which neither my mama nor I watch anymore. But I will watch out politician Barney Frank on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher. Saturday night there is a new outing of David Bromstad's Color Splash as well as new episode of Torchwood on BBC America. Titled "Something Borrowed" its all about a wedding, but don't let this photo get you all excited about something happening between Jack and Ianto. Ianto Jones on Torchwood
Sunday has Nate Berkus hosting Oprah's Big Give while Joshuah is still hanging around on Big Brother 9 and Shameless' gay storyline is still moving along. Still no word on Neil Patrick Harris' How I Met Your Mother, but maybe Britney Spears' appearance on Monday will boost ratings enough to get the show off the bubble of cancellation. Your best bet on Monday night though is the return of Greek on ABC Family featuring the out Calvin (Paul James). Check back on Monday for our interview with Greek's creator Sean Smith as he fills us in on all the details of the upcoming season -- including Calvin's new love interest.
Mario Cantone (pictured right) shows up on Wednesday's Men in Trees and if you already thought gay characters were on TV to help out straight folks, wait until you get a load of Teri's new storyline. I'm not saying it's bad, but I sure wish he still had a relationship with a man involving his heart as opposed to other vital organs. Make Me a Supermodel is a reunion special. No doubt there will be lots of commentary about Ronnie and Ben's bromance. And George Michael himself shows up for a trial on Eli Stone.
BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE! Moviefone has a poll up asking for votes on which actor looks sexiest in a swimsuit. I'll save them the trouble of counting votes and tell them to just give it to Daniel Craig now.
The National Black Justice Coalition is hosting their annual "Power of Us" Conference in Baltimore, Maryland from April 24-25-26. Participants include Carey Sherrell (The Apprentice), Marcellas Reynolds (Big Brother) and Ray Cunnigham (College Hill). Sign up now! Marecellas Reynolds, Carey Sherrell, Ray Cunningham
Book fans are discussing both the Lambda nominees as well as the Publishing Triangles' selections. Among the Lammy nominees is our own Brent Hartinger (who is also my partner) up for Split Screen, the third book in the Geography Club series, as well as Michael Thomas Ford for Changing Tides. The Publishing Triangle nods include Bob Smith's Selfish & Perverse for debut fiction and Brian Malloy for Brendan Wolfe. Congrats to all the nominees! The Gay Recluse queered up Arthur C. Clarke's obituary, but not everyone was amused. HBO decided to pass on Lily Tomlin's 12 Miles of Bad Road even though six episodes were already filmed. Poor Leslie Jordan just can't find a show that lasts. Check out this very funny bit about why straight folks have gay friends. Finally, The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times recently ran articles about the homophobic behavior of some straight fans at sporting events. With the just underway NCAA basketball tournament taking center stage, I'd like to keep track of any anti-gay chants or signs taking place at games. If you hear or read about any, please send me an email at editor@afterelton.com so we can keep track and write about this. Now I'll shup up so you can have the BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER! Tuesday night we've got more of the out Greg on Beauty and the Geek, the return of Bruno Tonioli on Dancing with the Stars, more Big Brother 9, and The Big Gay Sketch Show on Logo.

Neil Giuliano, President of GLAAD is a f**kwad extraordinaire
First off, please watch the language. Second, that comment by
You're kidding
I'm really surprised that you didn't enjoy Stardust---I loved that film! Oh, I was not at all crazy about the DeNiro character, though. (The best bit of that subplot was that his crew knew he was gay, and didn't care about it at all.) But I did get a kick out of the film in general.
I'm like a superhero, with no powers or motivation...
Evans did it right.
Either you want normalcy and equal treatment by writers or you don't. Looks to me like you want cliches.
In the real world it's not a subordinate's business who the boss sees in his private life. The character matter-of-factly stated his was invitee's identity. He didn't whip out the leather chaps and dance on his desk, he did go on a parade, he didn't wrap himself up in a rainbow flag, he also didn't say, "I'm gay, so I'm taking my partner of eight years."
Toni (and Brad) clearly interpret the choice of same-sex guest as meaning their boss is a gay man. Obviously they didn't expect this but they didn't freak out either and from Evans' point, life for the characters will go on as if nothing's amiss just because the boss might be gay.
Isn't that what folks are striving for in media portrayals, to be treated with a normal sense of dignity? If not, what is? Readers are smart. Not everything needs to be spelled out in detail or pre-determined by the writer. Seems to me Evans has it right.
He did what right? He didn't do anything
A normal sense of dignity does not involve the writer of the comic strip writing his characters so that they can be interpreted one way by a group of people and a completely different way by another group of people -- which is exactly what Evans told me he did, hence the quote . As for the storyline, I wasn't referring to to Brad and Toni's storyline but the one that Evans was potentially introducing with the Captain.
I've no idea where you get the idea I want cliches. I simply wanted the character to be gay or not. The Captain did not matter of factly state the identity of his date. He used a gender neutral name, then wrote it such that the reader would never know for sure the character was gay. Where you come up with my expecting leather chaps and the rainbow flag is beyond me.
As for Evan's not being concerned, did you miss the quote where he said:
I like to think that society has progressed past the point of making a big issue of these things. The truth is, plenty of readers still find this material inappropriate for the comic page.
Which is exactly why he didn't "spell it out" or as I'd put it, treat us like normal people. Finally, you'll be glad to know we've got the requisite quotes about fearing conservatives causing papers to drop him. In fact, this whole incident has spawned a look at how the comics pages are treating gay issues and Evans quotes will appear there.
Interesting
"In fact, this whole incident has spawned a look at how the comics pages are treating gay issues and Evans quotes will appear there."
Ooh! That is enormously interesting to me. Might there be a comparison between paper comics vs. online ones? Or even a second article for the online comics. Yeah, I'll be looking forward to this with anticipation!
Luann
I can see why he'd be scared of controversy, Luann isn't Boondocks, a strip with enough critical praise that it can weather controversy and calls to take it off the funny pages, so such a reaction could mean a loss of income. Still, it sounds like a topic he wants to address, it just isn't something he'll take a big risk with.
So GLADD Honors Stardust and ATWT. . .
. . .hmmm. . .
. . .I wonder if the NAACP ever honored Amos & Andy and Blazing Saddles?
. . . I'll have to look that up!
Been there, done that, bought the soundtrack!
New Love Interest?!!!
Heath was hot, so hopefully
The new love interest for Calvin...
GLAAD isn't interested in quality
They awarded "The Bubble"
Make up your mind!
Wonderful job as usual Michael. I always look forward to Best Gay Week Ever. However, I must say it seemed like two separate people were writing the column today. You defend ATWT for having interesting, well rounded (if not always well written) gay characters even if they are treated like the sexless do gooder gays (save a straight person by marrying them!) we always saw in the 90's; then you attack Stardust for not being worthy of a GLAAD award.
Stardust was a smart and funny children's movie, and the first ever to have a gay (rather than gay coded) character who was allowed to be openly gay, accepted by his crew of pirates, and even got to flirt with another guy at the end of the film without it being seen as something creepy. Considering Disney's homophobic Wild Hogs was one of the most successful family films of last year, I would think you would have been more impressed with what has to be seen as a huge step forward for the portrayal of gay characters in US children's films.
I should have been more clear. My beef wasn't with Stardust's
Dancing Machine
I couldn't find anything that they were and especially
Also the main judge Jason
Also the main judge Jason Coleman is openly gay.

comics, graphics, and novels
I too thought Stardust was a pleasant little movie. Sorry you're so easily bored. Neil Gaiman (in various blogs) was hoping it would be another Princess Bride , but it did only so-so at the BO. Maybe it will grow as a DVD.
I missed the gay ref in Luanne. Every little hint helps, I think. If you want out-and-out GAY, go to The Meaning of Lila, in which a gay boy and his gal pal sit around dishing and bitching. He's as unattached as Will, however. One of the jokes is that neither one can get a date. Or go to 9 Chickweed Lane in which the the main character, Edda, a ballet dancer, lives with Seth, her gay partner. Seth has a boyfriend, but they're too Oscar-and-Felixish to live together. They are a couple, however, and keep a maternal eye on the other characters.
Speaking of buried plots, I finally noticed one in TEX, S. E. Hinton's last Tulsa novel about the Outsiders gang. It's a beautiful book, written in the voice of a none-too-bright 14-year-old boy, who manages to tell the reader more than he himself knows. The characters ring true, and every chapter ends on a zinger. Maybe not a great book, but a perfect one in realizing what it sets out to do. Anyway, I finally noticed that Tex has a family of rich friends whose son, Blackie, left home after arguing with his father, who wanted him to play football while Blackie wanted to study art. Later, after much trouble involving Tex, it's noted that the father has gone to San Francisco to mend fences with Blackie. That's all that is said. But there for young gay readers to pick up on and be encouraged. (The movie with Matt Dillon is good, too, but not so rich as the book. During the filming in and near Tulsa, Hinton was a bit put out with her horse, who played Tex's mount. "Toyota loved that kid," she said; "He'd run over me to get to him."
We've covered 9 Chickweed Lane including an
Talking about So You Think You Can Dance...
Torchwood vs ATWT
So glad you mentioned "Love Songs"
I love Les Chansons D'Amour
This film for me was a lovely little surprise that I discovered when I went to last year's Toronto Film Festival. I had no idea that it was a musical and I knew that Louis Garrel was in the film, but he along with everyone in the cast, including the two female love interests and Gregoire) blew me away with their performances.
I didn't expect the reaction that I and my other 2 friends had while watching the film. We were dancing in our seats and then we were crying, laughing and applauding at the end.
It was a heartwarming, heartbreaking and ultimately joyful little film about how much love can affect you, even when you think that you can control how you react when you receive that love.
The line at the end of the movie is absolutely perfect.
Love me less, but love me a long time.
I disagree with your "carrot
Sometimes the carrot...
Sometimes the carrot needs to be dangled off the end of a really long stick.
If no daytime show had fielded any gay characters this past year would GLAAD have just given the award to the show with the best wardrobe and hairstyles?
I'm in agreement here that just because someone puts gay characters onto a show shouldn't automatically qualify them for an award. For starters, it's not like a GLAAD award is an Emmy or something. No show is going home in shame for not having won one. The idea is to reward really good depictions of GLBT characters on TV, not just their mere presence, regardless of whether it is offensive of not.
Luke and Noah have, as yet, failed to be especially groundbreaking. Their storyline showed promise but then took a nosedive into the gutter around New Year's and has yet to emerge into the light. Giving an award to this kind of cr@p sets the bar for a GLAAD award pretty low and undermines the entire premise.
Forbidden Love..
German Soap - I don't like soaps, but I watch this one ever since Christian and Oliver are an item (well not yet officially..) in "Forbidden Love" I watch it again (I watched in 2000 when there was the story of Tom and Ulli and then Tom and Oliver - no other gay male storyline for 7 years..).
I mentioned in some other thread the other German soap "Marienhof" (which I don't watch either :o) but have seen the episodes with Mischa and Sülo - read ahead for more). It's the soap that follows "Forbidden Love" immediately afterwards (both on the first German channel 'Das Erste' - one at 5:30pm the other one at 6:00pm). So, everyday, you can watch both half hours one after the other, if you wish to. Both soaps have fervent followers, that say they only watch one and never the other *lol*. Whereas "Forbidden Love" relates the stories of the more 'hip and rich' folk, "Marienhof" is more the German "Eastenders".
Anyway, last summer/fall, "Marienhof" had its own coming-out/gay storyline between closeted and to-be-married Sülo (he has a young son from a previous marriage) and out Mischa (teacher). He meets Mischa and starts feeling very strongly about him. Sülo is very very deep in the closet though and very much in denial. Also, he's Moslim and faces even more inner turmoil because of it and his feelings for another man.

GLAAD explains it?
As for GLAAD — are they perfect? No. Could they explain what they do better to the general public? Probably. Are there times they could react more quickly and more muscularly when homophobia rears its head in the media? Undoubtedly. But am I glad GLAAD exists, and do I think we're better off because they do? Undoubtedly.
Explain what they do better? An organization that gives media awards might have a problem explaining things? How can they judge others if they can't explain themselves?
I am happy that an organization exists who will calls the media out. But you act like they are the first to ever do that. They are not. And hopefully not the last.
Our community has limited funds. If we support GLAAD we need them to get it right every time. There are other groups that promote equality and if GLAAD is unable to, they should step aside and stop bleeding the community.
What troubles me is that GLAAD is too invested in promoting their own brand, over promoting fair representation of gays in the media.
ATWT deserved recognition for the work they did before the Christmas show when it became clear that the gay characters were second class citizens in Oakdale. The tide truned well before the first ballet was cast. GLAAD chose to have Van and Jake be their poster kids at the event, that was insulting and tacky. But it shows who GLAAD best thinks represents their community even if it doesn't represent ours.
Who needs NUKE when there's Olli & Christian?
Thanks to soapfan10038 and medusajames for posting the clips and subtitles, respectively. This entire storyline is so compelling. And Christian has a hot older brother as well!
And soapfan10038 even put together this great video with clips set to a song, "One More Try", sung by Jo Weil, the actor who plays Olli.

Olli & Christian
Agreed. It's amazing. Their relationship hasn't even really gotten off the ground yet, and the still already have more chemistry than Nuke! Maybe part of it is that since I can't understand the dialogue without subtitles, I am paying a lot more attention to their facial expressions and body language. The actors are doing a very good job with these roles. I know Van and Jake will tar and feather me for this, but I think that their performances look more than a little wooden.
Major props to our beloved subtitlers. You guys are awesome!
CHROLLI!
Exactly RJ! :o)
On April 15th Christian will attempt to tell his brother Gregor (very hot indeed - check out the picture: Christian on the left and Gregor on the right) about his feelings for another guy but will not be able to.
You can check for episodes here -
www.daserste.de/verboteneliebe/folge_dyn~folge,3126~cm.asp (it is in German though). For each upcoming episodes they have a few pictures to view.
In a previous episode Gregor seemed not uptight at all - a gay guy hit on him and he didn't react/freak out. So it should really be 'easy' for him to accept that his little brother is gay. But we all know, it's always very different when it's someone from your family.. right? Hmm.. Well, the episode when Christian will finally out himself to his brother will surely be quite interesting!
re: Chrolli
Is that the "official squish name" for the couple?!
Hmm.. Well, the episode when Christian will finally out himself to his brother will surely be quite interesting!
I'm so excited to see that Christian decides to tell Gregor about his new relationship with Oliver. It's nice to see that he took to heart what Coco said in her goodbye letter to him, about the one thing that made her fall in love with him was his honesty. In a way, she (along with Oliver) are the ones that are giving him the courage to face the reality of who he wants right now in his life. That's Oliver.
Their relationship makes me smile and it also makes me sad that here in America, we still have this issue about showing love (in all its forms) between two consenting of age adults on tv, especially daytime television. Thanks to the blog Gays of Daytime, I'm aware of all the other nations and countries that currently have or have had gay themed characters and storylines on their shows.
Squish Name
"Is that the "official squish name" for the couple?! "
I don't know, there seem to be many different ones:
1- Chrolli
2- Chrilli
3- Chrisolli
4- Chriolli
5- Ollian
6- Ollichri
Obessed with Forbidden Love
I found a website
Obsessed is a good description...
I think I've joined that club too. In the wee hours of Saturday, into Easter Sunday, I was watching all of the subtitled YouTube clips of "OllaCh" or "ChrOlli". And when those ran out at episode 14, I switched over the the original German non-subbed clips, reading the comment sections for the translations. I even dug around and watched soapfan10038's earlier posted clips of Olli & Christian which have neither subs nor translations, since the comment sections were disabled for some reason. It didn't matter, because much like Psionycx, I'm also watching their facial expressions as a way to interpret how they feel about each other.
Since running out of new clips of Olli & Christian, I've started watching clips of Roman & Deniz. Wow, those German soaps really put the American ones to shame!
Also, is it just me or does Christian look a lot like Nick Lachey?
This is the 21st Century

Psionycx...I love your honesty and agree completely with your summation and comparision of chemistry and good acting skills between the German Soap actors and Jake and Van. The praise given to Jake and Van is so overkill. I've seen Van being called a 'great' actor..i'm sorry, but I don't even think he's very good, mediocre at best. And Jake is even worse...stiff as a plank of wood. I also don't think they have much chemistry on screen together, either.
I just popped over to YouTube and caught a few of the chapters of the German SOAP with Christian and Olli...now that's what I call great chemistry and good acting. On my day off next week, I plan to watch from chapter 1 to present because i'm already intrigued with what i've seen so far. The two actors make you want to tune and see how their relationship progresses. With Luke and Noah, you tune in to see how further this storyline will go in its race to the bottom. I actually haven't watched since the Christmas episode with the pan away from Luke and Van kissing to a bunch of mistletoe.
And to think GLAAD actually awarded ATWT for it's gay storyline. By presenting this award to ATWT, it only gives them this false illusion that they're doing a fine job. This is one award this shoddy storyline did not deserve. Maybe ATWT need to take a look at the far superior gay storylines being produced in many other countries, and it will help bring them into the 21st century.
Christian & Olli versus Luke & Noah
Well, today Christian and Olli progressed to the very cusp of resolution.
Our usual translation angels haven't gotten to subtitling it yet. But just the facial expressions and body language that the actors use (especially Thore, who plays Christian) are so expressive that you can still get the sense of things without understanding the German language. Christian showcases fear, uncertainty, doubt, desire and jealousy all within one YouTube clip. His face says everything that he is thinking and feeling even without words.
In contrast, sitting through a typical bout of Nuke involves watching Jake with a vacant expression on his face and Van with a look of petulant unhappiness. It's like they've realized that the dialogue they've been given is crap, so now they're abandoning any effort to embelish it with pretended emotion.
I say they need to yank that GLAAD award back from ATWT and give it to Verbotene Liebe!
no gay guy could resist this show...
Read the comments to soapfan's videos
actually...
Jo Weil (from Verbotene Liebe) gives an emal interview
I agree
"In contrast, sitting through a typical bout of Nuke involves watching Jake with a vacant expression on his face and Van with a look of petulant unhappiness. It's like they've realized that the dialogue they've been given is crap, so now they're abandoning any effort to embelish it with pretended emotion."
Psionycx...You gave me a good laugh with this because it's so true. After seeing the HollyOaks storyline between John Paul and Craig, and now this really well written and wonderfully acted storyline of Olli and Christian, it only further highlights the dirt poor writing and acting going on with the story regarding Luke and Noah. I watched all the translated episodes on Monday of Olli and Christian and was glued. I'm very greatful for the time and effort from medusajames in translating into english. On the weekend i'm going to do like you and just watch episode 16 onward without the translation, since the acting is so good you get an idea of what's going on in the scene.
"I say they need to yank that GLAAD award back from ATWT and give it to Verbotene Liebe!"
I completely agree...the Luke and Noah storyline didn't even deserve a nomination in the first place much mind walking away with a GLAAD trophy. I think it's quite embarrassing
Christian and Ollie - Guardedly enthusiastic
While I am certainly enjoying these clips, I am reserving judgement to see if they avoid the same tired progression that every other European gay soap couple has had this year, i.e. John Paul/Craig, Roman/Deniz, etc. The tiresome "I'm not gay, I'm just in love with this particular gay guy, and now I'm going to retreat in fear to Vagina Heights."
As bad as the writing is for Luke and Noah, and it currently is really bad, at least the two guys are clearly sure they are gay and in love with each other. Of course, on cowardly ATWT, they never get to the kissing or sex, but I don't see Noah ever going back to the ladies, in spite of the hideous Ameera.
But realistically...
Granted, Europeans do seem to have a greater belief in the notion of bisexuality than Americans, and it certainly shows in everything from Torchwood to their soaps.
Being that these are soaps I don't know if we can expect permanent relationships for the same-sex couples any more than for the opposite-sex ones. On the upside however, for their time onscreen they do pack in more outright passion than Nuke have ever.
Let's face it, Nuke can't continue this way for much longer. They've become so painfully dull and uninteresting that I can barely even be bothered to watch the YouTube clips anymore (and in fact only check out about one in four now and dropping fast). Even if Noah didn't run off with a woman (something not guaranteed to be honest) I don't know if they can last being as boring as they are. Audiences do want to see romance on soap operas and Nuke are more like brothers now.
That said, I did find Roman and Deniz both disappointing and inexplicable. Especially since Deniz's hag/girlfriend is so dull. I strongly suspect she's a pity f*ck.
I certainly can't argue
I certainly can't argue with you about the deadly dullness of Nuke at this point, but the ONE POINT I will give ATWT credit for is that Noah reiterates over and over that he is gay and in love with Luke. The same can't be said for waffling Craig, Deniz, and perhaps Christian (too early to tell).
Of course, since being gay on ATWT means holding hands at best, declarations of love and orientation are moot, at best !
Too early to tell about Noah too
Let's be realistic here. The only proof we have of any homosexuality on Noah's part is two mediocre kisses and his personal assertion that he loves Luke. Beyond that we have no other evidence. We do know that he was able to have sex with Maddie without too much of a problem and he used to make out with her a lot more passionately than he ever did with Luke even before the kissing moratorium. He could easily be as bisexual as Deniz.
Given Jake's uncontracted nature with the show, and P&G's seeming discomfort with this storyline, it wouldn't surprise me if Noah ended up having sex with Ameera and perhaps getting her pregnant (a likely soap opera plotline). They could then use his well-documented sense of duty to justify him staying with Ameera and perhaps writing off his relationship with Luke.
This has to give one way or another. The Nuke relationship sucks too badly to stay the way it is. But I'm not sure they won't choose to just end it instead of heating it up.
