News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (March 7, 2008)

IT'S YOUR WORST NUKEMEERA COME TRUE! WELL, FOR AT LEAST SOME FOLKS ANYWAY!
Ever since Ameera somehow found her way to Oakdale sans green card, Nuke fans have been speculating that Noah would end up marrying her to keep her from being sent back to sunny Iraq.

Well, this week I've been talking with a source close to the show who says, yep, get out your wedding finery because Noah is getting hitched to his Baghdad bride. Let the howls of protest commence!

My source went on to say that even though Nuke and Ameera are getting hitched, there is absolutely nothing romantic about it. In fact, Luke and Noah reportedly discuss the marriage-of-convenience in a way that reflects on what they would like for themselves and Luke is 100% behind the marriage. In other words, Ameera will not be coming between Nuke who will keep nuzzling, holding hands and making moon eyes at each other.

Additionally, my source says that folks can stop fretting that ATWT are going to wash their hands of Nuke entirely as both Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann are sticking around. No word on the kissing though, so if that is your prerequisite for watching then I'm not sure what to tell you. As for me, I'm sticking with it despite yesterday's incredibly lame cutaway.

BTW, a big round of applause to the fan groups that brought world wide attention to Nuke. It was truly amazing to see the story covered by the Associated Press, the BBC and most every news outlet here in the U.S. Alas, some media did better than others and one of the worst was CNN's Showbiz Tonight that brought in rightwing blowhard Ben Ferguson and out publicist Howard Bragman to "debate" the issue.

Here is the clip. Try not to throw anything at the screen while watching.

Gosh, how many journalism awards do you think Showbiz Tonight has won? This "news piece" ticked me off for several reasons. First of all, why bring in the rightwing ninny to debate this issue? Especially when it's clear he knows nothing about the show or the "activist" groups "pushing their agenda". Argghh...

As for Howard, he's a perfectly nice guy, but A) there are not plenty of places where you can see two gay men kiss on television and B) when Brainstem Ben started blabbing on about the show's ratings, it would've been nice had Howard known ATWT's ranking has actually climbed since the Nuke storyline began. Oy! Double oy!

But the blame here really belongs on CNN for not knowing bupkus about what they are covering and brining in two guests that barely knew any more. Gosh, if only there were a website devoted to covering gay and bisexual popular culture and if only there were a magical machine that would let "reporters" do research and ask questions of folks who know something. Well, that's just crazy talk, isn't it?

BTW, one not entirely unexpected result of all the media attention is that now the American Family Association wingnuts are officially attacking As the World Turns over Nuke. Gosh, whomver is in charge of hysterical overreacting to gay issues was sure asleep at the switch to only have clued in to this now. Isn't there a Bible passage saying they should be stoned for missing that?
