Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (March 7, 2008)
BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE! Elton John
Did you know it's been thirteen years since Australia's Ian Roberts came out and he is still the only rugby player to have ever come out? Out scribe Scot Heim has a new novel coming out next month called We Disappear. He's going to be appearing at the Chelsea Barnes and Noble on Tuesday, March 11th. I bet he'd be happy to sign your books! Fallen Angel blogged about the U.K. soap Emmerdale's first civil partnership, but AfterElton.com reader Paul had a few things to add. Paul said the received a huge amount of attention with the day time shows giving it coverage as well as the daily papers and the weekly soap magazines. Okay, all the U.S. readers fantasizing the same sort of thing happening for Luke and Noah raise your hands. Yep, I thought so! Scott Heim, Emmerdale, Ian Roberts
Here is Mathew Bose, one of the actors, talking about the signficance of the episode. AfterElton.com reader wrote in about the most recent episode of House on Fox which featured some gay subtext. The subtext in the episode, titled "Don't Ever Change", is even acknowledged on the Fox website where it says, "House goes to the restaurant where Wilson and Amber are on a date. Amber asks him to join them. She gets the maitre d' to seat them ahead of the other people waiting. House sees many of his own qualities in Amber. He questions whether Wilson is really in love with him instead. House runs out." Hugh Laurie, Robert Sean Leonard
I've had folks write in about something going on between House and Wilson and just maybe the writers are going to go there a little bit. David Hyde Pierce does a nice interview with BroadwayWorld.com where he discusses what being gay has meant to his career and his coming out in the press. Oddly, he doesn't mention us. Hmmm... We mentioned on the blog how some fundies are all tweaked that high school students are studying Pulitzer Prize winning drama Angels in America. Another fellow in Nampa, Idaho is all teed over the fact that the library there carries The Joy of Gay Sex. But he's not necessarily homophobic as he's also upset because they carry The Joy of Sex. The man calls the books pornography because "all the body parts are detailed and that kind of stuff." And here I thought that was called biology. This week's Ask the Monkey column set off quit a discussion in the comments about the subtext in Disney's animated movies. I now present incontrovertible proof that some of the characters are not just coded gay, but are gay. (Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey!) Samesame.com just announced the results of their poll to determine the 50 Gayest Songs of All Time (hey, I thought polls like that were our shtick!) and believe it or not, the winner is not "YMCA". Actually that was the number two song. You can find the winner here. AfterElton.com reader Matt from Georgia also stumbled across the list and found it a little, well, obvious. Matt thinks it would be interesting to come up with a list of less stereotypically gay songs. Says Matt, "I'm thinking of things like 'Big Gay Heart' by the Lemonheads or 'I Thought You Were My Boyfriend' by The Magnetic Fields. Unfortunately, I just seem to happen upon these songs most of the time; I'd love to hear more like them. So, I'd like to suggest that AfterElton maybe try to make a list of, let's say, off-the-beaten-track 'gay' songs, specifically ones that deal with men." So how about I make everyone honorary AfterElton.com Flying Monkeys and you can all fly around digging up songs like Matt suggests. Post them in the comments and next week or the week after, I'll post them! Now I'll shut up so you can have the BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER! Submitted by on Fri, 2008-03-07 10:28. |

Luke and his name?
Yep, that is what I meant!
Jeez
Love your column. But you are seriously coming off as whiny and annoying when it comes to Simon on AI. Grow a thicker skin, and get over it. Jeez. This is also not the first time where you come off as being over sensitive which causes you to over react. Yes, he gay baits Ryan (which usually Ryan starts, btw, for the most part), and it gets cringe worthy and head ache inducing. But besides that, did you not notice that Simon is also the most well spoken, lucid, and have actual constructive criticism as opposed to the two clowns to his right?
If anything, you should be taking offense to Paula's incoherent ramblings that take up precious screen time. So, bottom line, grow a thicker skin, don't take offense to things while there isn't any offense to take, and stop being a cry baby and attacking people when it's not really warranted.
But it's a fine whine, aged in a smoky oak
I'M ALL FOR MORE WHINE!!!
Whine
You got that right. I'm pretty sure Simon is a closet case myself, most homophobes are.
I think our skins are already too thick and we take too much sh*t as it is.
Keep on with it Michael.

gay songs...
1. "Michael" - franz ferdinand
2. "Take Your Mama' - scissor sisters
3. "Everything Possible" - the flirtations
4. "For Today i Am A Boy," 5. "Frankenstein - antony and the johnsons

13. Strange" - the feeling
14. "Origin of Love (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) - john cameron mitchell
incidentaly.. only the group franz ferdinand is straight... all songs mentioned are about gays and are sung by out gay men (except for mika... who's in the glass closet)... and it's nice to see antony and the johnsons singing about pre-op transexuals with their songs "For Today I Am A Boy" and "Frankenstein" and with mika's song "Billy Brown" dealing with bisexuality...... so LGBT is fully represented (i'm sure there are lesbian songs by indigo girls but i did not include it here... maybe afterellen can have their own compilation).... two songs i don't know if they are explicitly about homosexuality- "Strange" by The feeling and "Only One Life' by michael feinstein.
Pansy Division - He Whipped
Pansy Division - He Whipped My Ass In Tennis (Then I F***ed His Ass In Bed)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gew0hERB2LoActually, 'One Man Guy' is about preferring solitude...
...rather than a relationship. It was written by Rufus' dad, Louden Wainwright, and if you take a look at the lyrics you'll see it's not so gay after all:
"Sure it's kind of lonely
Yeah it's sort of sick
Being your own one and only
Is a dirty selfish trick"
and
"I'm a one man guy
I'm a one man guy
And my one man guy is me"
oops! sorry

"10,000 BC" looks like a string of cliches to me. From "You have a great destiny" to the sabre-tooth lion cum Alien heavy-breathing on our hero. As for House and Wilson, I saw it coming from episode 1. At first I thought Wilson was House's Poe-like alter ego, because he never seemed to appear in scenes with other cast members. But I think that love was always waiting in the wings. A number of videos on youtube have been exploring this theme for ages. As for gay songs (who comes up with this stuff?), at least four MIAs: Mabel Mercer's "Ballad of the Sad Young Men," Dusty Springfield's "Closet Man," David Bowie's "All the Young Dudes," and Magnetic Fields' "Papa Was a Rodeo." Of course, I've been writing them myself for years, but don't get me started....I agree. It looks terrible and yet
Terrible
Yes, the preview show a huge Greek or Roman style building, (in 10.000 B.C.?) but the beefcake caught me, I'mm definatally gonna see it.

Kenneth Turan's Review of '10,000 BC' this morning...
...on NPR was pretty close to yours. He says it's so "preposterous that has to be seen to be believed."
The best quote is: "Who knew, for instance, that woolly mammoths were used to build the pyramids?"

Oy f*@#-n' Vey!
Ben Ferguson came across as such an idiot in that interview. Spouting off about how a gay kiss from NUKE "pushes an agenda", as if simply featuring the storyline doesn't push said "agenda". It's a gay storyline. Period. There are gay couples, Ben. Slice of life. It doesn't have to be "pushing" anything, just showing it like it is.
As for "raiden251", you are way off-base about the Simon/Idol thing. Simon has repeatedly shown his negative attitude toward guys who came across as effeminate, even going so far as to tell auditioning guys they should have performed their song "in a dress" + making other snide comments. He's done it w/ contestants like AJ Tabaldo (who sang the hell out of "Feelin' Good" in season 6) and others.
It's possible to be over-sensitive, granted, but it's also possible to let people get away w/ too much.
My PC monitor is still intact
After watching Ben Ferguson, I just felt the sudden urge to just pick up my PC's monitor and throw it across the room or even against a wall or something. He keeps going on and on and on repeating the phrase "The reality is...". What a jerk! I don't think that he even grasps the meaning of the word reality. He's living in a fantasy world. The REALITY is that homosexuality is REAL, VERY REAL, and it's not going to go away any time soon. Actually, IT'S HERE TO STAY, so Ferguson is the one who should grasp/understand what REALITY truly is. F**cking ass!! The only way to shut this a-hole up is to stick a dick in his mouth. Rant over...Peace out.

As far as I'm aware, the
As far as I'm aware, the lead singer of Franz Ferdinand is gay. Apparently he's pretty much known in the music industry as the gay indie from Scotland lol.
So House and Wilson might be in love? I don't watch the show, mainly because I assumed there was nothing gay in it lol. Maybe I shall start watching now ;).
I'm surprised at Simon Cowell though...he doesn't come across at all as homophobic when he's in the UK doing The X Factor.
It is not really gay but a
Matt from Georgia...
make sure...
also make sure to check out all of the songs from these artists.... their songs are soooo moving.... although they don't specifically use pronouns.... i just pretend that they're singing for a guy, cause, well, their gay!.....
1. levi kreis.. specially his album "One Of The Ones" - "I Should Go" is one of the best ballads i've ever heard...
2. michael feinstein - "Only One Life" album... songs by jim webb... a classic! although some of his songs used "she" and "her"... he does need to satisfy his older women fans, i guess...
3. eric himan - (haven't heard all of his albums but i'm sure there's a gay song there somewhere)
4. billy porter - the only old school r&b gay singer i know.... his album "untitled" was butched but he was very open (and very gay) in his live album.
5. rufus wainwright (ofcourse!)
6. john barrowman's "Another Side"
7. brian kennedy (i heard him from the vocals of a secret garden song "you raise me up").. such an angelic voice.
8. girlyman
9. jason & demarco - i wish they have a love song duet... although i don't have all their albums so maybe they do...
10. matt zarley - "say goodbye" is a good song... though no pronouns again..
11. the late michael callen.... love his songs... his album "Legacy" is so moving!!!
12. antony & the johnsons - all of thier albums- very haunting.
i like pansy division and i should include them though their songs are kinda "r-rated".... must be the good 'ole catholic boy in me kicking in.... though i do have 4 of their albums....
sorry if i miss any artist.. but these are the ones in my ipod that stood out (and ofcourse elton john)..... other acts, bob gentry, daniel cartier, lee lessack are aslo worth noting.
Psychadelic Furs
hmmm
I wonder how long noah has to stay married to ameera?
...from watching other soaps before, I hope it is not too long because, er....she could start developing real feelings for him and try and tear them apart. I doubt they'll do that, but at this point, who the hell knows? EH
Gay songs? Pansy Division covers that pretty well
Granted, not exactly multi-platinum, but still some affirming music. The song titles are a bit intense, like the lyrics, so in the interest of decency, I'll list them spelled the way iTunes does:
-
"A Fem in a Black Leather Jacket"
- "Anthem"
- "I'm gonna Be a S**t"
- "Horny in the Morning"
- "Dick of Death"
- "Bad Boyfriend"
- "James Bondage"
- "Vanilla"
- "Alpine Skiing"
- "Groovy Underwear"
- "No protection"
- "Political A*****e"
- "The C********r Club"
- "Homo Christmas"
- "He whipped my a** in Tennis"
Oddly, I'd been listening to "The Essential Pansy Division" for the first time in months yesterday, feeling the need for something more fun that the usual jazz. There may be gayer songs out there in the world, but I'm not sure how...Oh there's Gay in "Paranoid Park" Alight!
Didn't you get that Alex's father is living with another man called "Uncle Tommy" -- and he's played by DP Chris Doyle? That plus the casting of Mike Nivens -- pure, unadulterated eye-candy. PLUS there's Gus regular Seth Green who lures Alex to the railroad yard where the fateful event occurs. IT BE GAY, DUDE!
As for House, gay subtext (or even main text) would be no problem for Hugh Laurie whose best pal and frequent collaborator is the Unspeakably Fabulous Stephen Fry. Not sure House would make such great boyfriend material, however. We've all dumped guys exactly like him.
American Idol? Is there anybody straight on that show? It's a cheap insult any way you look at it. And it's in a race to the bottom with Big Brother for "Most Loathesome Show on Television."
YUCK!
Pushing Daisies better off without Reubens
Great show, but I hate Reubens and his character. Make him go away asap and please don't let him be the gay character. It will ruin my favorite show on television! I'm cringing at the thought of it.
If they bring Reubens back next season I'll have to fast forward through his scenes... and unfortunately once I start fast forwarding through scenes of a show I usually just stop recording it and move on.
And yes, I want them to do more with Olive and Alfredo.
This show is so inventive. I hope it doesn't self destruct.
Franz Ferdinand
I really enjoy this band, and 'Michael' is one of my favorite songs! I just love the fact that it's a male singer, asking 'Michael' to dance with him, etc... I'm going to listen to it right now :)

Some Songs About Gays...
Just off the top of my head:
Cowboys Are Frequently, Secretly (Fond of Each Other) - Willie Nelson
I Like Mike - Jay Spears
Two Guys Kissin' Ruined My Life - Tom Smith
and possibly Deeper Into You by Johnny Hazzard, just because it's sung by a gay porn star.
Another Gay song
Just Some Guy by Anthony Rapp
Of course there are others on the CD, but that one's the sweetest.
Don't trouble yourself Doctor -- I'm a celebrity, I'll write my own prescription.
And yet another gay song...
Perhaps this doesn't absolutely qualify as a "gay song" per se but I'm gonna put it out there anyway. I'm referring to Christina Aguilera's song "Beautiful". Why you ask?
1) The lyrics: "You are beautiful, no matter what they say, words can't bring you down". A perfect description for us gay people and what we face in this often hateful and narrow minded world of ours. Quite simply, it's a postive message that applies not only to gays but to everyone really. That is, anyone who is totally and whole-heartedly accepting of other people regardless of who they are and their situation.
2)The video itself: It features (among others) a man who cross dresses as a woman (a transvestite perhaps? Not sure...but what does it matter anyway). It also prominently features a gay couple being affectionate with each other and kissing and all that good stuff. It's not really a "danceable" song but just imagine nuzzling up to your man on the dance floor and have a very romantic slow dance with him. Ahh...I can see it perfectly in my mind! :)
I'm sure there's many more, but this one came to my mind right away as soon as I finished reading the Top 50. Peace everybody.

When House Serenades Wilson, his composer of choice is...
afhickman
"It takes a village (to make Village People)"
...Tom Robinson. Here are two of my favorites: "Sing If You're Glad to be Gay" and "I Want to be Your Cabin Boy (All Night)." I once wrote a song called "And My Cabin Boy Jumped Overboard Last Night," so I'm partial to this last one. By the way, Hugh Laurie used to team up frequently with Stephen Fry on TV and in films (even after Wooster and Jeeves). Anyone know whether they will be collaborating again soon?
not likely
at least not "soon" - in his first "podgram" fry has just told what he will do this year (apart from his usuals - qi, kingdom, etc - apparently about 1000 documentaries including the one where he visits every single state of america and the douglas adams "last chance to see"-sequel)
and I doubt laurie will have much time either.
But both said in interviews, they would like to work together again
House and Wilson
I've been watching House pretty much from the beginning and there have been lots of gayish remarks made by House toward Wilson. It was always done sort of tongue in cheek but with no punch line, like House referring to eating lunch with Wilson as "a date". Kind of "ha ha" and then "well, maybe". And Wilson has always seemed kind of gay. Like he actually might be in love with House but is too intellectually astute to get mixed up with a head case like House. Just a feeling I've always had.
I say we take the warning labels off everything and let nature take it's course.
Disney Heroes as Pin-Ups
Germane or not
Germane or not, that is one HOT idea! Thanks for the link. But where's Beast? Post-transformation Beast used to get my young heart a-flutter (and it's just one reason I saw the film 13 times in the theatre).
Actually, thinking back on it now, I used to love that kissing scene, and though I couldn't even admit it to myself at the time, would erase Belle out and imagine myself in her place. I would tell myself I was just fascinated with learning the proceedure, but really, I wanted to be kissed by a prince. Does/did that happen to anyone else?
"Grow a thick skin" bullshit
Hmm... right now, I'm with
Hmm... right now, I'm with you about Oscar. (I would think it's Alfredo if he weren't so strung up on Olive, but...) And he's going to be on another episode, says IMDB (as I'm sure you saw), but we've only seen him on... one, right? Yeah, the smelly one.
Anyway. House/Wilson is so canon it's insane. The latest episode just cemented it for me.
Pushing Daisies
I'm pretty sure Raúl Esparza (Alfredo) has been on the show twice now.
And didn't the funeral director die? I know he had a twin, but I thought he died too -- I mean, they both died.
If it wasn't for the "not a regular" part, I would say Swoosie Kurtz's Aunt Lily.
And what about Molly Shannon's character, the daffy taffy lady? I read somewhere that she would be back (maybe even a regular).
Or even Manuel, the hunky night janitor seen in the famous "Hopelessly Devoted to You" number:

Hugh Laurie thinks he's being snubbed in Britain. Here's part of an interview which appears on http://www.bbc.co.uk/ : "The award-winning star told the Radio Times the hours on the show are 'relentless' and he has not been offered any work in his home country. 'The door slammed behind me, and that's it. There's a notion that I've sold out,' said the performer. Laurie added that he would 'love to do anything' with Stephen Fry again, his former Jeeves and Wooster co-star."
