Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (April 4, 2008)AfterElton.com reader Mike asked what I thought of this article about the "gay boyfriend". Says me? Yawn. Not exactly the freshest joke in the world. Even though Battlestar Galactica still doesn't have any gay male characters, I'm TIVOing it this Friday. Then I heard one of the guys was going to be getting naked and I got really interested. Until I learned which guy. The 22nd Annual London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival is underway through April 10th. Can't get enough Tim Gunn? Here is an eight page profile of him. Be warned, it's about business. Welsh presenter Iolo Williams is a gay icon? Okay, I can see it.
Iolo Williams The Washington Post declined to identify this deceased soldier as gay. Their self-justifying gymnastics are more dizzying than watching Cirque du Soleil. Speaking of gay soldiers, the one man play, The Eyes of Babylon, is playing in Salt Lake City. Written by Jeff Key it tells about the 34-year-old gay marine veteran's experience fighting in the Iraq war. You can buy tickets here or learn more about the play (which was turned into the documentary Semper Fi) by visiting the play's website.
Jeff Key SPOILER ALERT: Make Me A Supermodel*** Last night was the finale of Make Me a Supermodel and Holly won. Oh, well, at least it wasn't the obnoxious Perry. Check back later tomorrow for our interview with Bronnie themselves! Tonight I'll just picture these photos as I drift off to sleep. It's just like counting sheep: Ronnie, Ben, Ronnie. Ronnie, Ben, Ronnie. Ronnie Kroell, Ben DeChiara
Now I'll shut up so you can have the BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER! Submitted by on Fri, 2008-04-04 14:05. |

A Pretty Damn Gay Week!
Well, lot's going on here it seems!
BTW: LOVED Luke in Sigourney Weaver battlebot mode from Aliens!
Nuke is a write-off and at this point I wouldn't even care if they all
died in a barn fire. Luke and Noah's relationship is so badly written
(and, flame me if you will, acted) that it's frankly easier to imagine
slash fic relationships between virtually any of the male characters on
CSI than between Luke and Noah. Also, someone needs to clue Noah
in on the fact that proper Iraqi wives are supposed to lock themselves
in a closet when commanded by their husbands.
Battlestar Galactica is just too frustrating to watch because, honestly, all I want is to see Jamie Bamber, completely naked, for the full 40 minutes of each episode. It doesn't even have to be related to the plot in any way. I just think he needs to be naked. Oh yeah, he need to be naked....
Bisexuality on European TV certainly is vexing. On the other hand, I think would should attach some merit to the idea that loving someone is more important than selecting partners solely on gender basis. The assumption that love is equal whether it's heterosexual or homosexual is what has been powering the substantial progress of gay rights (in particular partnership and/or marriage rights) in Western Europe.
Central and Eastern are a whole other problem of course. Russians can be expected to oppose homosexuality though. It gives them someone to harrass who doesn't have main battle tanks to retaliate with like Czar Vladimir. They are still a century or two back socially-speaking remember. One has to keep that in mind and view them with the pity/contempt they deserve. After all, my late grandfather would be scandalized that I hold the hated Germans in much higher esteem than our ancestral Poland. But Germans (except the ones with copies of Mein Kampf hidden in their nightstands) are way more gay-friendly than Poles, most Slavs and Serbs and the Russians.
We have to be indulgent of Torchwood. It is not, contrary to some mistaken belief, meant to be Brothers & Sisters with aliens, gadgets and supernatural circus freaks with severe gingivitas. I'm actually surprised that Janto have come as far as they have given that their relationship in Series 1 existed more on the Internet fan fiction boards than on the actual show. It is still supposed to be a sci-fi show, and Jack is supposed to be a bon vivant. That he's sticking to Ianto as much as he is seems kinda nice. But I still wanna see what the series finale holds. I have little hope that Gwen will die but one can still dream.
Another great recap of the week! Thanks for pulling back some of the venom!
Germans and Poles
I want my two cents worth added in reply to Psionycx's comment on relative homophobia of Germans and Poles, with Poles faring much worse in the homophobia scale. But as a South Asian with brown skin (who also happens to be gay) who has been to both countries, I know only too well which country's population is more friendly and welcoming to dark skinned people like us. Germans simply pretended that none of us actually existed, while Polish people were usually smiled with you and were friendly. That is the germans' racism wasn't overt but we all felt it. I was there with my family and obviously this had nothing to do with me being gay but everything to do with the colour of our skin. The difference in how Germans and Poles behaved in similar situations felt very stark to me.
While the Germans maybe way ahead when it comes to issues like homophobia, I still would go back any day to very really homophobic Poland (and socially backward according to Psionycx) where they are welcoming rather than go back to so called socially supreior Germany. This isn't just my unique expereince as I found out later when I read about others who had similar expriences.
Cultural differences
That may be a whole different state of affairs however. Poles are actually very social compared to Germans, at least in public. Especially in recent decades because tourists are something of a novelty as they did not get many during their time as part of the Communist bloc.
But I rather felt that Poles were kind of like the Japanese that way. Japan is very high-context and very polite as a culture. However, many Japanese have an intense dislike of foreigners. They would never want to be seen as rude however, as this is frowned upon. I have joked with co-workers that they have a unique ability to make it clear that they loathe you, even with a smile on their faces and a cheerful tone of voice.
Poland hasn't seen much inward immigration yet as compared to Germany, so most foreigners and members of other races that they see are tourists. If you actually lived there then you would start to run into racism issues, and possibly religious ones. Poles are some of the most aggressive Catholics in Europe and don't care much for other religions and certainly don't want them becoming prevalent in Poland. But they are very protective of Polish nationality and culture and it remains to be seen how they'll cope with multicultural issues should they begin to become an immigration destination.
The Germans on the other hand have been experiencing the pangs of a lot of immigration and, rather like Americans with Latinos lately, have been in something of a social upheaval. Also, Germans are not very social with strangers relative to many other European cultures, even with other Germans. In Germany the culture favors having few, but very close, friendships rather than lots of casual ones. People on the street and the shops are rarely what we would consider friendly even though they are impersonally polite.
Again, I'm of Polish ancestry and a lot of this behavior was even still present in older members of my family that had come from Poland. They were usually very friendly but were often shockingly hostile to other ethnicities or religions when in all-Polish groups. Seeing Poles in their natural habitat and watching their politics leaves me with the sense that this holds true even in the old country.
So despite my ancestry I prefer Germany. Maybe not as friendly on the surface, but at least a bit more honest.
You maybe right
Bailey Chase is not Hotprechaun
I was momentarily confused when I read the part about Bailey Chase being "Hotprechaun". I'm no ATWT expert but I believe Dylan Chase is Hotprechaun, as Brian calls him. According to IMDB, Bailey played Chris Hughes from 2003-2005 but Dylan is the current Chris Hughes, since the character's return to ATWT last year.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1851313/
I was confused too
I am no ATWT expert either, but I was scratching my head over that picture. While that guy is hot, he doesn't look like the Hotprechaun I have seen on ATWT...at least since I have been watching (last August). Dylan Chase is the Hotprechaun that I know. Is there another? Brian?
This has been a test of the emergency mistake system.
Er...that should be Dylan Bruce...
Russell Tovey is great
aww
Russel Tovey. He was the one reason I liked the Kylie-Doctor Who Christmas Special. I have quite a thing for guys with flappy ears. And the actor opposite him, Rob Brydon, is one of my favorite QI-guest. Nice morning gift.
The unknown woman next to Russel T. Davies seems o be Julie Gardner Executive Producer of Doctor Who.
And, well, you're almost correct when it comes to german - just unscramble the SHC to SCH and it's fine.
I would say Germany is quite liberal when it comes to homosexuality or just indifferent. And we are so thoroughly determined to be a liberal and open-minded country that even those who aren't have to pretend to be (and will turn around first chance they see).
There are some out politicians. The mayor of Berlin who might be a future candidate for Bundeskanzler (He outed himself with the now famous words: I'm gay and it's good the way it is). Hamburg's mayor is inching out of the closet. The liberal party leader came out some years ago. Well, none of them really sympathetic but influential.
On the other hand the number of hate-crimes (not only with gay victims) increases. Mostly commited by neo-nazis and young turks/arabs
"Brazilian" TV Show
It's Spanish
I actually knew that! It's my turn to be sick this week and I'm
You want a live blog?
that would be...
I'd love to do it, but
Hollyoaks, Torchwood and the many roles of John Barrowman
While John Paul and Craig's relationship is over, I was surprised that you didn't go on to mention Kieron, the gay catholic priest, or Kris, his more stereotypically gay athiest friend, at all...?
I love that Craig leaving hasn't meant that John Paul has forgotten him and is struggling to move on. Also, John Paul and Hannah, John Paul's former girlfriend who nearly died, appear to be fostering their non-romantic relationship and she seems to have totally accepted his being homosexual. But you should definitely check out Kieron's angst, I think its pretty well acted.
Glad you're being nicer to Jack- its great how the Janto has developed this series, [and will continue to] and remember you can always get a feel for how Jack has changed by comparing him to the other old Jacks and the jaded Jacks and even with Captain John-- who will be reminding you of James Marsters hotness as the series draws to a close.
Loved Hotel Babylon, it was so camp and so funny. John Barrowman, busy busy man that he is, is also going to be presenting a childrens/family quiz thing soon. He had also been presenting a radio show all this week, and is judging a bunch of Nancys on I'd Do Anything, where he can be seen wearing a striped shirt every single week as they work through a reality show audition for casting Nancy and [three boys for] Oliver in Oliver! And it has Graham Norton presenting, in progressively more metallic suits that I can't stand and love more each week. What more could you want? For Denise van Outen to be crushed by a falling chandelier? I can only dream...
Well...
Ex-Soviet States
What polling has been managed in Russia, Ukraine and other ex-Soviet states, as well as dear old ancestral Poland, generally puts anti-gay attitudes at 70+% of the population. So it's generally not a question of "some" homophobes, but rather of finding some people who are gay-friendly or at least indifferent.
Granted, it's not as bad as most of the Middle East but it's still not especially good to be gay in most of those countries. So you'll have indulge my dislike of those countries.
Germany, and most of Western Europe are generally much better, although as noted Nazis and immigrants from Islamic countries have pushed up the anti-gay violence rates, particularly in the Netherlands of all places. I remember hanging out at a neighborhood bar in Frankfurt with some local co-workers and was quite impressed by the fact that there was a gay couple there kissing and nobody seemed to mind.
It would, however, be immensely gratifying if Klaus Wowereit were someday become Chancellor. Has he ever gotten around to getting a Lebenspartnerschaft with that bf of his? There's also talk that Bertrand Delanoe, the gay mayor of Paris, might be a prospect for the Socialist party presidential candidate in France in a few years.
As for the television in Europe. Well, European media has always been more risque than American, especially during the heyday of the Hayes Code for movies. Now I just think that homo/bisexuality provides another angle for them to liven up their plots with. As gays become more integrated into society our presence on TV includes more "everyday" characters and stories.
Click and Skins
Yeah, I'm surprised you
Yeah, I'm surprised you didn't mention John Paul and Kieron as well, Michael. There was a lovely scene when John Paul was explaining to Hannah that before, he was willing to be with Craig at all costs because he was head over heals in love. But this time, he doesn't love Kieron enough to put everything on the line for him. It was very believable and it shut all the Craig fans up who were constantly bleating on about how John Paul has totally forgotten about Craig and how John Paul is evil blah blah blah. Hopefully this gives more chance of a Sunset Ending now :D.
On the topic of bi-sexuality, I think the problem is that when characters are introduced into soaps they are automatically made to be straight. And then when the writers decide to do a gay storyline they don't really want to introduce too many new characters so they use what they've got. Hence making characters bi. Not to mention it makes it more dramatic when someone has to come to terms with their bi-sexuality because it is more difficult, as I should know. I found that in a lot of people's minds you are either gay or straight and there is nothing inbetween, but then my body was telling me something different and it made it a much more confusing time for me. I am 100% sure that I would have come out much earlier if I was just gay.
But anyway, it's not as if there arn't any gay men around either. Sean and Marcus in Corrie, Christian in Eastenders, Paul and Jonny in Emmerdale, John Paul and Kieron in Hollyoaks. So I think people doth protest too much sometimes.
Thanks muchos for the Russell Tovey clips, they are hilarious and basically sum up my argument completely on why you should not use stereotypes :D.
Well, I try to cover it all, but Brent is already threatening to
Speaking of John Paul & Kieron...
Must agree...
I'm sure we've seen the same spoilers and I don't like where the story is headed either. Niall is truly evil and bent on tormenting the McQueens. No good can come from Fr. Kieron becoming his flatmate.
What I really like about the Kieron story is how JP (McQueen) has at times been more conflicted and reluctant to become involved with the priest than the priest himself. I can't help but think if the story were done on this side of the Atlantic the temptation would've been to make JP a predatory seducer. I found this made JP more believable and gave the character additional depth. Given the spoilers, I can only wonder how the conclusion of the Kieron story will haunt him.
At this point, I'm not a fan of a "sunset ending" for him and Craig. While the feelings my remain, I think he's clearly out grown Craig.
Your loss!
Uh, I should be so lucky
At our house it's all Dirty Jobs (well at least Mike Rowe is eye candy), Modern Marvels, History and Anthony Bourdain. Anything else has to be DVR'd.
Don't trouble yourself Doctor -- I'm a celebrity, I'll write my own prescription.
Y&R....
Prozac, the breakfast of champions!
Thank you, Michael! Excellent job as always! This does seem to be a pretty damn gay week. I'm excited to see the Doctor Who episodes with Captain Jack. That will be fun/interesting to watch. My roommate is going to be so sick of Barrowman. Haha!
I'm still looking forward to the Nuke storyline, though it seems like I'm joined by fewer and fewer people each week. I sincerely wish this Ameera plot-device storyline will wrap up quickly though. I have no idea where TPTB can take it.
And, I wanted to thank you for all the excellent clips you've included throughout the column. I had to actually hold in my laughter when watching John Barrowman on Hotel Babylon. That was possibly the funniest thing I've seen all week! I may have to watch it again, just because...
Get well soon!
I don't care what John Barrowman is in
He is good in everything he does!!!! Saw him in Sunset Boulevard in 1995. Been a fan ever since.....On YouTube search for him on "Never Mind the Buzzcocks" and on "Friday Night Project"....Campy plus on both!!
I agree
In my heart, I'm secretly English, Australian, or Canadian, but
Yay Michael, honorary
Yay Michael, honorary Englishman.
I'm glad you don't hate Torchwood because the finale was a corker. Too much bloody Gwen though and not enough lovely Ianto as usual. I won't spoiler it for you but safe to say it was to die for. I know what you mean about Jack, Ianto must be either blind or the least jealous person in the world, the next series they better listen to what we all want or there will be trouble.
The finale was intense, and
Facehugger Ameera
The woman next to Russell T. Davies is...
.. anything but unidentified. It's fellow Doctor Who producer Julie Gardner. But I'll let that pass for now, since she's a woman and all that ;-)
I love that you're reporting on the German soap Verbotene Liebe... I do like their storylines and how they execute them, but the acting in German soaps is unfortunately pretty poor^^ The Christian/Olli storyline has potential, though ;-)
She was unidentified on Getty Images whence the photo came!
VL: today was a hot episode!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You ain't just whistling dixie! OMG Wow!
German TV
It was like this with Roman and Deniz too. Complain however much one feels like about bisexual story angles, the Germans at least aren't afraid to have their soap opera same-sex couples actually get it on.
I was absolutely slack-jawed (and drooling) watching Christian and Ollie so passionately and tenderly kissing and undressing. And it wasn't just wimpy tentative kissing either. They really managed to look like they were into it. And DAMN they both have beautiful bodies!
This just makes ATWT look all the more pathetic and embarrassing.
Aah! You beat me to it!
Aah! You beat me to it! Thank you for posting. I did watch it on TV and it was just the hottest scene ever! So sweet, so tender, so hot. I love the actor who plays Christian (Thore Schölermann)! I used to watch VL in 2001 when Olli was in love with Tom who was in love with Ulli before that. Great memories! VL has been 6 years though without a male gay couple! It's not as frequent thus, but much much less hesitant or covert like on ATWT!
It's fun for once, to be the ones to be able to watch it first and also understanding it (I'm half German, born in Belgium) :o)! But YouTube is pure magic!
I hope that Christian's brother Gregor (a beautiful man!) will react normal when he finds out (from Christian himself, I hope and not through someone or worse running into Christian and Olli in an inappropriate moment - this has been seen and done before in other series.. no need to do the whole dramatic finding out again). He should though, because up to now Gregor has been more than very relaxed vis-à-vis gay people.
As to Jo Weil, I do not know of course, but my gaydar says yes, he is gay.
Just for info, Belgium has a very prominent gay Socialist Party president - Elio di Rupo.
Thanks for the pics....
Sunset Ending for John Paul and Craig
"There was a lovely scene when John Paul was explaining to Hannah that before, he was willing to be with Craig at all costs because he was head over heals in love. But this time, he doesn't love Kieron enough to put everything on the line for him. It was very believable and it shut all the Craig fans up who were constantly bleating on about how John Paul has totally forgotten about Craig and how John Paul is evil blah blah blah. Hopefully this gives more chance of a Sunset Ending now :D."
Jason...I was one of those fans who went on and on about John Paul not mentioning Craig, so I was elated this week when he opened up to Hannah about what he has been going through. The fact that he has been suffering in silence over his breakup with Craig said it all. And i'm really glad that John Paul told Kieron straight up that he will never take Craig's place, and quite frankly, doesn't love him. I can't stand Father Kieron and find him manipulative and creepy, so i'm happy that he will be making a quick exit in the coming months, never to return.
There is an interview on Digitalspy with Bryan Kirkwood the producer of Hollyoaks accepting the award for the John Paul/Craig as best storyline, and he more or less stated it would be mental for him not to persue getting Guy Burnet back to wrap up the storyline. And James Sutton is 100% up for the reunion. James said he cried like crazy when Guy left. I think the Sunset Ending is going to happen. It was a beautifully written and acted storyline by both Guy and James, well deserving of a more satisfying ending.
I'm now addicted to the Germany Soap storyline about Olli and Christian. Again, a well written and acted story. I don't know why TPTB over at ATWT will not just take a chance and develop the Luke and Noah instead of giving fans nothing but fluff and cotton candy. I think they are missing out on a goldmine the Luke and Noah storyline could really bring for ATWT.
Have you got what it takes to be a Johnette?

"It takes a village (to make Village People)"
There's a lovely interview with John Barrowman on youtube from the Paul O'Grady show. You can find it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbAAE6rWNhI.
It seems John is a very busy man these days, even taking on a children's show (it couldn't happen here!). He also announces the formation of a fan club (or is it an army?) called the Johnettes. No scatalogical humor, but John is in rare form.
Warning: this interview is in two parts. Don't miss the last two minutes!
