Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (May 2, 2008)
JULY — IT'S ABBA VS BATMAN
Sam Carmichael, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Amanda Seyfried The uber-cheery Mamma Mia opens the same day as Heath Ledger's final movie, The Dark Knight. No doubt a lot of gay men will turn out to see the Brokeback Mountain star's final performance as The Joker.
For those looking for something entirely different, there is a remake of Brideshead Revisited based on the book by Evelyn Waugh. Brideshead is the tale of Charles and Sebastian, two young men — one upper crust, one not — who meet at Oxford and become life long friends, including some sexual encounters between the two. Those old enough to recall, might remember that in the original version Jeremy Irons played Charles while Anthony Andrews played Sebastian. In the remake, Matthew Goode plays Charles and Ben Whishaw is Sebastian.
Ben Whishaw, Matthew Goode, Jeremy Irons, Andrew Andrews It's been twenty-seven years since the original, and I'll be very interested in seeing how the gay aspects are handled this time around. Brideshead Revisited opens July 25th. Mamma Mia and The Dark Knight both open July 18th. Finally, if you're looking for something foreign and don't think remakes of English novels already turned into movies count, then cast your eyes eastward for Korea's No Regret about two men who fall in love despite their class differences. Wait, that sounds a little bit like Brideshead, no?
