Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (May 2, 2008)

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!
Logo's (AfterElton.com's parent company) NewNowNext launched their first annual NewNowNext Awards which aren't your typical kind of awards. Amongst the categories to be honored are the OMFG Internet Award, the Cause Your Hot Award, and the Most Guiltiest Pleasure Award.

Of course, we can't let NewNowNext have all the fun, so we're going to be helping them by awarding the "Best Same-Sex Kiss Award", something right up our alley of expertise. Check back next week for the nominees and to cast your vote! And Logo will show the awards on June 7th.

After you finish voting over at NewNowNext, be sure to vote to support Nuke on As the World Turns (even if you don't love it, or I'll send a flying monkey after you!). All you have to do is call 1-800-331-3774. You'll press 2 to then to be asked whether you support Luke and Noah's storyline. If you do, then you can press 1. If you don't, open the gas valve on the stove, count to twenty and light a match. What? I'm just trying to be helpful!

We already mentioned that Van Hansis snagged himself an Emmy nod, but so did the out Judge David Young for his show. Here is a fun little clip of David finding out about the nomination.

Leave it to John Barrowman to say something about giving it "a good squirt of cream" and talk about "moist bottoms". John, John, John. Oh, and he flirts with James Sutton, too. (Thanks to dkellergrl2001 for the link!)

And since I haven't mentioned Shelter in a while, here is a nice little musical interlude from our favorite surfer movie! BTW, you might want to study this closely because I suspect one of our nominees for "Best Same-Sex Kiss" just might come from this.

Finally, yesterday we launched our annual AfterElton.com Hot 100 list that let's you — our gay and bisexual male readers — declare who you think are the hottest 100 men on the planet.

Last year you chose Jake Gyllenhaal as your favorite man. Will he repeat or will you choose someone else? And might that be a gay man this time around? I don't know, but I'm really curious to find out so be sure to go vote! The polls are open until May 16th!

One final note: I want everyone who takes the time to comment on the column — positively or negatively — that I read and appreciate all of your feedback. And I do try, time permitting, to respond when asked a question or for a clarification.

One question raised last week was why, whenever we mention Logo, we always add in parentheses that Logo is AfterElton.com's parent company. While we believe we are fair and objective in our treatment of all the content we cover, whether it be by here!, ABC or Logo, and are completely editorially independent from Logo and they don't influence our content, we think you deserve all the facts, including the fact that sometimes we are reviewing content provided by the folks who own us. We appreciate the trust and goodwill you place in us, and want to be as forthright with you in turn as possible.

Now I'll shut up so you can have the BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER!

No Regret?

I've seen No Regret a couple times already. It was on Youtube about six or seven months ago and I saw it on a website about two months ago. (It's been pulled now.) I thought it was just one of those great foreign films that never comes to the US. I even tried to find a place to buy it. I am glad its coming and I highly recommend it. Its such a great movie. Great acting, great writing, great cinematography. Just great.

-------

I am saddened by the absence of Andrew Van DeCamp on DH. I really liked his storylines before he became the good son. I liked the rebellion. He really got on Bree's nerve. When he moved out so that Bree could start a new life with Orson I was like WTF. What happened to the hell raiser? If he gets more airtime I hope the writers give him justice or at least a boyfriend.

Brideshead Revisited

While the original adaptation of Brideshead Revisited was very, very homoerotic in terms of longing glances into each other's eyes, there were no actual sexual encounters shown between Charles and Sebastian - not even a kiss. And the book never specifies that they have a sexual relationship (though you can read between the lines).

What I've heard about the new film is that the screenwriter wanted to focus on the relationship between Charles and Julia (Sebastian's sister), so there will be much less Charles/Sebastian screentime than in the original. Which sucks - but at the same time I suppose there is the possibility they will at least be more upfront in dealing with the Charles/Sebastian friendship while it's going on. I don't know, though.

Re Criminal Minds:

"The killer turns out to be a young man whose father is so homophobic that the poor fellow developed a variation of a split personality disorder where, since he hates himself so much for being gay, he takes on the personalities of men he kills in order to feel better about himself."

Um, wasn't that made in the 80s and called 'Cruising'? Starring Alpa Chino, no less. Way to be really original, Criminal Minds.

I must be confusing my

English films because I could've sworn that CHarles and Sebastian snuck off on to the roof for trysts with each other. Am I thinking of a different movie?
dkellergrl2001's picture

You might be thinking of "Another Country"

Michael - You might be thinking of another English film, "Another Country", starring Colin Firth, Rupert Everett and Cary Elwes.

Brideshead Revisited

Hey Michael - Like dkellergrl says, you might be thinking of Another Country, where Rupert Everett and Cary Elwes sneak off for trysts in a boat - or, you might in fact be thinking of a scene in Brideshead where Sebastian and Charles sunbathe nude together on the roof. It is crazy homoerotic, but nothing actually happens... at least not on screen. ;)
Michael Jensen's picture

That's what it is! I guess to my younger

mind, seeing two grown men sunbathe nude together was tantamount to sex. So glad I"m not crazy! Well, crazier than I already thought.

Milk Cartons and Gay Serial Killers

Love the milk cartons with the MIA gay characters on them! Criminal Minds wasn't too bad of an episode. My biggest beef is that the victims of gay serial killers in storylines are always other gay people. Writers should be more creative. Why wouldn't gay serial killers target homophobic politicians? or anti-gay clergy? or "family values" leaders who make money violating gay people's human rights? That would at least be more original.

Criminal Minds REALLY offended me

The gay murder victim with the cowboy had the worst "Texas" accent I have ever heard. As if gays in Texas don't have enough to worry about! I watch Criminal Minds every week...the show is sadistic and weird, but they have mostly good actors and interesting characters, and they also have a wide variety of hot men (from the twink with the long hair to the always gorgeous Shemar Moore to the ageless Thomas Gibson...and Joe Mantagna isn't bad either). The episode did not impress me, but my expectations were so low, I wasn't offended. I'd rather see Andrew missing on DH than to see more of their embarrassing attempts to write for him. Since Marc Cherry is unable and unwilling to write anything for gays, can't he just stop? This will give him even more time to fawn over the dreariness that is Orson, or to have Eva Longoria fighting a dog. John Barrowman and James Sutton together...I'm glad James is getting some spark, Hollyoaks barely uses him now. Too bad, he's wonderful.

Almost forgot about

Nicholas Brendan, who represents the nerdy geek hotness. I find him much sexier now than I did when he was on Buffy.

You Don't Mess With the Zohan

I`ve seen some promo clip a while back,it`s just....the way Adam Sandler talks, his accent REALLY bugs me,get on my nerves.I just don`t think I can sit through the whole thing with him speaking like that. The only reason I might wanna check it out is all because of my girl Mariah Carey which plays herself in it for maybe a few minutes.Guess I`ll wait for other people`s opinion on it.

btw,I`m really looking forward to Mamma Mia The Movie.Although not a big fan of ABBA,love love love Ms. Meryl Streep!!!And Colin Firth playing gay role?Big Plus!

Here's a clip of the vamping: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ltxO1j4ZeZQ Now tell me why we have no gay vampire shows.

Saw "Savage Grace" last night and it's teriffic

But it's not likely to win any GLAAD awards, beig so depressing and all, with an unhappy ending and no "uplift" or "learning moment" on the "journey." There -- I've exhausted every Oprah-cliche I trust. I thought the Criminal Minds episode (which I turned in to quite by chance) was fairly interesting. And WAY better than Cruising.

Gay Birmingham?

Don't expect the Birmingham Police Department to get back to you. You asked the wrong people the wrong question. Don't know the local political structure of Birmingham, but try asking the mayor and city council members why Birmingham is unsafe for law abiding gay tourists who can be expected to be arrested when they aren't doing anything wrong.

I would be interested to know what gay activists in Birmingham had to say. Sites exist for Gay Bham and Central Alabama Pride, but there doesn't seem to be a local publication.

I know you meant well, but giving an up-arrow to Little Miss Iraqi Sham Wife?! I don't believe for one second that she "graciously" gave up her bed to Luke. She manipulated the situation, playing on Luke's basically good-nature. She figured he'd feel guilty and awkward about the situation and bolt, and throwing him in with Noah would only make him bolt sooner. How could she have guessed her plan would work so well?! She wasted no time at all in moving her stuff back into the bedroom and giving us her patented "look of triumph" as she eyed the bed. I don't know if she's delusional and really in love with Noah, or just working for his Psycho Dad, or both. I really don't care but, hopefully, we will find out soon and she will be out of Nuke's orbit and off my TV screen--like yesterday! I've never believed one bit of her sob story.

Appealing vampires

I've been wondering if many people here were watching "Moonlight"---I've rather been enjoying the show. Of course, it doesn't hurt that lead actor Alex O'Loughlin makes a very hot vampire. And I did find that same-sex bite last week oddly and weirdly appealing---ha!

Oh, David Blue (the gay photographer on "Ugly Betty") plays another vampire on the show, incidentally...

I'm like a superhero, with no powers or motivation...

Wrong name

Concerning Brideshead Revisited, you mean Anthony Andrews, not Andrew Andrews.

Tropic Thunder

Umm, Michael I'm kinda surprised no-one has yet pointed out that the 'Afican-American' character Brandon T.Jackson in this movie is played by Robert Downey Jr. There was quite a bit of coverage of this a month or two back.
Michael Jensen's picture

Actually, Brandon T. Jackson is the name

of the actor, not the character I was referring to. The movie has two black characters. Well, one real black character (played by Jackson) and then Downey pretending to be black. The character I'm talking about who apparently turns out to be gay is Jackson's Alpa Chino.

Vampires

Yes I saw the scene on Moonlight, thought it was completely haaawt. They didnt shy away from anything, so that was good.

I was commenting that this show is increasing the hunk factor. Of course the dreamy Alex O'Loughlin and Jason Dohring, but now Eric Winters seems to have been added to the cast and now gay fav David Blue is a blood sucker too.

Alex O'Loughlin was voted sexiest man in Sci Fi recently, he certainly made my Top 10.

Thanks for the info on the HBO show, Ill keep on top of that. Im a sucker for this type of content, no pun intended.

Too bad about Brideshead, the original was kept quite true to the novel, all the right nuances where there to make the logical conclusion. But that was easier because it was a series and not a movie.

Brideshead Revisited

Saw the trailer for it on Apple.com/trailers. Must say looks like good fun.

Don't trouble yourself Doctor -- I'm a celebrity, I'll write my own prescription.
