News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (May 30, 2008)

For leaving a funky taste in her mouth, Samantha (Kim Cattrall) dumped Bobby Cannavale, with whom we gays fell in love as Will Truman’s final-season boyfriend on Will & Grace. Given it was Bobby Cannavale, I think I would have found a way to just suck it up and stick with him.

Daniel Sunjata, who played gay and, even better, totally naked in the Tony-winning drama Take Me Out, appeared as a sailor who Carrie picked up during Fleet Week. Hmmm. Maybe there is something to that theory she’s actually meant to be a gay man. And, by-the-by, why isn’t Sunjata a huge star by now?

While I can take or leave the long-term boyfriends/husbands the SATC women eventually settled down with (personally, I never got what the big deal was about Big, who just struck me as the kind of jerk I’d hate to see any of my female friends date), I found Smith’s (Jason Lewis) sensitivity and eagerness to please Samantha utterly adorable. Lewis went on to win over more gay fans when he appeared as Kevin Walker’s boyfriend on Brothers & Sisters, and he can now be seen repeating his role as Samantha’s squeeze in the SATC movie.

In addition to Smith, I’m hoping some of these other former hotties make a surprise reappearance in the movie. Frankly, I’d rather see Carrie ultimately carried away by a Sunjata or a Cannavale over a Big any day. How about you?

A KISS IS NOT JUST A KISS WHEN A GUY IS WITH A GUY
A few weeks ago, when Michael wrote about 20/20’s Candid Camera-like “Gotcha!” exposé about how the (presumably straight) public reacts to gay PDAs, I had to agree with him about how the segment ridiculously overhyped the extent of gay kissing on TV today.

But that was before May TV sweeps, and the canoodling gay soldiers on Grey’s Anatomy, the Kevin/Scotty SWAK nuptials on Brothers & Sisters, the schoolboy swap-spitting on Gossip Girl, not one but two NUKE nookie sessions on ATWT, and capped off by this week’s fraternal Greek kiss between Calvin (Paul James) and Michael (Max Greenfield) — a first for the ABC Family channel.
