Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (June 13, 2008)My second TV viewing marathon was Reaper. This supernatural comedy was a particular favorite of Brian Juergens this year, so I thought I'd check it out.
The premise: Sam Oliver turns 21 and discovers that his parents sold his soul to the devil before he was born. So now Sam has to pay off the debt by working for Satan as a "Reaper" — someone who collects evil escaped souls.
Bret Harrison plays "Sam" on Reaper The series kicked off with a great pilot but then quickly became repetitive for epsiodes 2-10. Each installment was the same: Sam gets assignment from devil, then at great peril to himself and his homeboy sidekicks he collects the evil soul and sends it back to hell. The good news is, in the second half of the season the show began to depart from its episodic formula and launched far more interesting multi-episode storylines. One of the biggest of these involves a group of demons plotting to overthrow the devil.
Two of the demons are a gay couple living in the apartment next to the Sam, and they are really quite funny, both in how they relate to one another and how they take Sam and his slacker friends under their wing. The demons are played by Michael Ian Black and Ken Marino. I won't spoil anything by telling you what happens to them, but they make their first appearance in episode 12. I highly recommend this series (though you can probably skip episodes 2 through 10). You can watch Reaper online for free at CW.com.
