News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (June 13, 2008)

FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE:

OUT ON DVD

The most exciting thing out on DVD next week is a film Matthew Rhys made with Brittany Murphy back in 2003.

Brittany Murphy & Matthew Rhys in Love & Other Disasters

In Love & Other Disasters Rhys plays "Peter," the gay best friend and roommate to Murphy's character. This film played at a bunch of film festivals but never got a U.S. theatrical release. Kind of surprising since, in addition to Rhys and Murphy, the film has cameos by Gwyneth Paltrow and Orlando Bloom. The few reviews of the film that are out there are mixed, but apparently Rhys is a standout. According to Variety:

The cast works overtime at being oh-so-droll, and the effort shows. Only Rhys seems entirely comfortable with the material, his relaxed, unforced manner making Peter the most likable figure onscreen.

Here's the trailer....

THEATRICAL RELEASES

There's not much of obvious gay interest at the multiplex this weekend. (Unless you count that really cute guy who sells you your popcorn.) But two big budget films are vying for your attention nonetheless.

First up we have The Incredible Hulk. Which I could swear I've already seen like a few years ago. (Just kidding). Marvel decided a do over was in order after Ang Lee's sensitive touch in the 2003 film made the Hulk, well, not so incredible. This new version stars Edward Norton (who is always fun to watch) and promises a great deal more action than the Ang Lee version. In fact, the filmmakers are touting a 26-minute long fight sequence. 26 minutes? Geez that sounds sorta tedious and a reason to not see the movie. But that's just me.

One thing I really hope they answer in this new film — something that's bugged me in the comics, the TV version, and the first movie: When he transforms and sprouts mountainous thigh muscles, how does the Hulk manage to keep Bruce Banner's tiny trousers from bursting at the seams? Curious minds want to know.
