Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (June 20, 2008)
THIS IS AFTERELTON TRAINEE BRENT HARTINGER, AND I’LL BE WRITING BGWE THIS WEEK
For the last two years, AfterElton.com editor Michael Jensen has been writing this weekly column. Michael also happens to be my partner, so for the last two years, I’ve totally dreaded each Thursday, which has landed like a stink-bomb in the middle of our week. “How hard can it be to bang out another screed on the length of the latest ‘Nuke’ kiss and put together another drooling photo-tribute to Cheyenne Jackson?” I’ve said time and again while Michael works late, and dinner goes uneaten on our table, the latest episode of Ugly Betty going unwatched on our Tivo.
Cheyenne Jackson (Getty Images/Bryan Bedder), Luke and Noah from As the World Turns But now that I’m in the hot-seat myself, I’m suddenly reassessing my opinion of this column’s degree of difficulty. I’m instantly reminded of that scene in Will & Grace, where Grace is supposed to have her blood taken, but finds out the nurse is a trainee:
Anyway, I’m trying hard to quickly bang out this column and suddenly, like Will & Grace’s Nurse Pittman, I’m all, “This is hard!” So, Michael, I apologize for two years of snarky comments and exasperated sighs. And I’ll be working late tonight, so you’ll be cooking dinner. [EDITOR's NOTE: Apology accepted.] IN GAY POLITICAL NEWS, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING OF NOTE HAPPENED THIS WEEKOh, wait, there was that little thing in California where, you know, EVERY GAY PERSON IN THE UNITED STATES CAN NOW GET LEGALLY MARRIED!!!! That’s right, folks, because the state of California, unlike Massachusetts, will marry out-of-state residents, gay marriage is now legal. Now whether you can get your home-state to honor these marriages, well, that’s your problem, but New York has already said it will. In other words, this is the biggest development in gay history since Liza downed her first whiskey sour and took to the stage (sadly, she was six-years-old at the time). Here are a few of pics from the the happy and historic day:
And you can see even more photos of happy couples over at Bilerico.com. I could say more, but then I’d have to actually write something, so I prefer just to link to Michael’s and my latest Two Gay Guys vlog on the topic. Bonus: we parody the new Sex and the City movie at the same time we make our frighteningly trenchant point. For the record, Michael and I are definitely getting married when we go to California in July. We’ll take the camcorder along with us, and yes, we totally expect gifts.
