News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (August 29, 2008)

Hello possums! Welcome to another edition of BGWE. Bear with me, before we cover the bigger ticket items (Matthew Mitcham's gold medal win, the Democratic National Convention, etc.) I want to talk about...

KEVIN SMITH'S DIRTY NEW MOVIE
You gotta love a straight guy who's willing to pose for the cover of A Bear's Life, the gay men's mag for bears and the men who appreciate them. Kevin Smith, the director/actor/comic book writer did just that back in 2007.

And though he certainly has his hirsute and roly poly charms, you really don't have to be into bears to appreciate Kevin Smith. The man deserves props for executive producing the documentary Small Town Gay Bar, and also his deft handling of gay issues in his film comedies, Chasing Amy being a good example.

That's why I'm looking forward to Smith's upcoming film: Zack and Miri Make a Porno, which stars Seth Rogen (who I find inexplicably attractive) and Elizabeth Banks (a.k.a. "the blond Parker Posey").

The plot of the film is pretty simple: Zack (Rogen) & Miri (Banks) are best friends and slacker roommates. Broke and desperate, they get the idea to make a porn movie to raise some fast cash. They get this idea from a gay porn star they know played by Justin Long (the "Mac guy" and sometime Drew Barrymore boyfriend).

But wait, there's more! Playing Long's boyfriend in the film is none other than Superman himself: Brandon Routh. Cue the....

...completely gratuitous shot (from unidentified film) of Routh in his underwear

Both Long and Routh's parts in Zack & Miri are uncredited. (Who knows why. Maybe it's easier to play gay that way?) In fact, word only recently got out that Routh was in the film when a preview clip featuring him and Long was shown at last month's Comic-Con convention.

The film is scheduled for an October 31st general release date but will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival which runs September 4-13. If anyone happens to catch it in Toronto please write in and give us your take.
