News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (September 5, 2008)

The official magazine for Torchwood published their reader's poll and — surprise, surprise! — Jack's various snogs were voted some of the fan's favorite moments. The favorite Jack moment was his snogging Captain John (James Marsters) while my favorite moment — Barrowman's mackng with me Jack's incredibly romantic kiss with the real Captain Jack — finished third. Meanwhile, the favorite Ianto moment was his kissing Jack.

BTW, in case you can't make what it says under the SECRET AGENT! headline, it reads "I'm just a big gay nerd at heart — and proud of it!"

I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that the majority of this magazine's readers are probably straight twenty-something fellows so how cool is it that the magazine has no problem with that headline and that the readers are so down with same-sex smooching? Meanwhile, here in the States, we're lucky enough to have scifi shows that use aliens, monsters, and intolerance as metaphors for gay characters. Me, bitter?

And thanks to AfterElton.com reader and frequent tipper Wayman for telling us about that issue!

Speaking of hot man-on-man action, here is a clip I've been holding on to for a while: Ben Browder smooching Stargate co-star Michael Shanks at Comic Con.

In the "it couldn't happen to a better guy" category, Paris Barclay this week was promoted to executive producer for HBO's In Treatment. Too bad Blair Underwood's sexually conflicted character is already dead.

You can check out the hotties up for Mr. Gay Brazil here. The winner is crowned Saturday night! We'd vote for Paulo Szot, but he's already got a Tony Award.

It won't be televised until September 20th, but on Saturday night Neil Patrick Harris and Sarah Chalke host the Creative Emmy Awards in Los Angeles. On Thursday, Neil and I chatted about that and much more including his nude scene. What nude scene? You'll have to check back next week for our interview with Neil to find out.

Neil Patrick Harris, Sarah Chalke

The presidential election isn't the only big vote happening in November. Voters in California also get to weigh in on Proposition 8, the attempt by some not so nice folks to take the right to get married away from gay and lesbian Californians. Not content to stand by and let that happen, a whole slew of celebs including Wilson Cruz, Christine Lahti, and Tyne Daly are speaking out against the initiative in a series of PSAs. Here is number one!

If you haven't already contributed to the fight, why not do so now?

Finally, I'll be jetting around the country next week first to New York and then off to Los Angeles where I'll be doing a set visit to Brothers & Sisters as well as General Hospital Night Shift where I'll be chatting with Chad Allen about his guest stint on that show. We're working on some other interviews as well, but I don't want to jinx those!

Now I'll shut up so you can have the BEST.GAY.WEEK.EVER!

Disagree with you on Palmer

Michael, a great column as usual. I do have to disagree with you on Jim Palmer. I thought he was one of the main reasons I knew I was gay early on when I saw those Jockey underwear ads. I know a lot of guys like Beckham, and he is hot I don't deny that, but if I had to choose between Palmer at his physical peak or David Beckham, no contest. It would be the Oriole for me!

Jim Palmer!!!

I so agree on Jim Palmer. He set my pre-pubescent heart aflutter.

Actually, what I like about the old Playgirls is the body types back then--they seemed like men I actually might see. I think the last decade or more of Playgirl the models were all porn stars.

"And trust me, Jim is no David Beckham"

Damn straight.  Jim was WAY hotter.

Torchwood Magazine's readers...

I don't have any access to any statistics, but I do suspect that Torchwood Magazine has  very strong female readership.

Overall I'm under the impression that both Torchwood and the new Doctor Who have very strong female fanbases.

Best Gay Week For Me!

yay! Finally some material that I found made it on Afterelton!!I`m so happy ^_^ Although the Comic Con kiss is not directly on the lips, it`s still quite steamy.I admit I had watch it several times.

Anwar & Maxxie's episode is going to get an upper arrow.I`m positive.Keep watching Skins, everybody! It`s a good show.

And I can`t wait for those Big.Gay.Interview!Keep them coming!

btw, dear Michael,I`m pretty sure you got pi wrong,it is supposed to be 3.14159265 ;)

Michael Jensen's picture

No way is that wrong! Just like John McCain

got his pic of Walter Reed off of the Google, I checked my figure on the Google. Or could that be the problem!

Are we even using the same google service?Just google it myself,it`s still 3.14159265,not 3.141256.XD

http://www.google.com/search?q=pi

There`s a chinese tongue twister to help us chinese folks to recite pi all the way to the 22nd decimal place.I learned it several years ago.

Your McCain joke was lost in translation

Some of your international readers apparently didn't pick up on the McCain/Walter Reed reference.

I think that's the problem, because Whitetee is right!

π (pi) is certainly equal to 3.141592653[…]

And by the way Europe isn’t the only place where a comma is used instead of a period when denoting decimal points, we do that in Latin America too ;)

Hey what about "After Dark"?

When it comes to mainstream gay erotica of the past Playgirl had its moments (not quite as many in my view as you declare) but the all-time champ was After Dark -- or as my friends referred to it, After Dork. Love to see a 21 Gun AfterElton salute to the home of Viola Hegi Swisher and Norma McLain Stoop.

Skins

I think the best way to describe Skins is real life on steroids (although it gets a bit ridiculous in season 2). Each episode may be based around a storyline so over the top that its like a soap, but at its heart are original, complex characters who reasonably accurately in my view reflect a certain segment of British teenagers.

As Whitetee has said, the Maxxie & Anwar is excellent. It shows Maxxie at his best - occasionally a bit of a stereotype but someone who has a an actual personality and issues beyond the usual coming out storyline.

The PSA is missing something...

What I'm wondering is why there weren't any male gay couples in that PSA. Hell, there was only ONE guy in the whole thing. Are they separating lesbian and gay couples into different PSAs? If so, why? Just a thought.

Uh... Wilson Cruz?

Wilson Cruz is in the ad and appears alone. He's an out male actor.

The estrogen in the ad is suspcisious in its excess, however. I hope this is not a cynical attempt to keep gay male couples hidden away because they're seen as "too threatening" for a PSA campaign.

I'll be voting NO on 8 but this PSA leaves me cold.  I wonder if Manheim, or some other famous faces they may use, might be too polarizing to be helpful.

Michael Jensen's picture

This is just the first PSA. Let's

wait and see who is in the others!

playboy's comics penises

I remember finding my dad's playboy's and flipping through those pages on the off-chance that they had a guy half-naked in them. I rarely came by such a picture. But when I did... They did show a lot of cartoon penises on ugly hairy fifty year olds though. I felt so starved for a sexual experience in my teens that when I finally did become an adult (at 18?) and went to college...Can you say man-whore? Redundant?

Awaiting release..

Oh yes, I was wondering about the "50 Greatest Gay Movies" poll too! Will have to wait until Monday then I guess.

I had heard of "It's All Relative" but was never able to watch it until now! All episodes have been/are being shown twice in a row on a Flemish channel (VT4). I quite like it! I think all main characters are likeable in a way and you can see that the actors are having fun together.

I said it before, I think Hebrew is sexy! And can't wait to see more of "Until the Wedding" (by the way Michael, it's Ohad Knoller, with a 'K')!

In line (sort of) with "Patrik 1,5" France has released a movie called "Comme les Autres" were a gay couple get's into relationship trouble, as one wants to adopt a child, the other doesn't. I haven't seen it and don't know much more (it's only being released in Belgium on the 10th of September), but there are pictures and a trailer clip here: www.marsdistribution.com/film/comme_les_autres

Also, "Sa Raison d'Être" is available on DVD (www.amazon.fr) and "Autopsy" will be released on 24th of September (www.amazon.fr) - both I mentioned on the "50 Greatest Gay Movies" thread.

It's All Relative

I`ve only seen about 2 or 3 episodes a while back, and I loved it!Hope the whole season would make it to DVD someday,I`ll definitely buy it.
j U d E's picture

I would too!

I would buy it too.

There's one episode on every evening on that Flemish channel, but since I'm not taping it (no more room on my harddisc..), so far I have missed a couple.. I hope I'll be able to catch the final one (wedding?) when it's on.

I don't remember them ever kissing?  Does anyone else?

The Israeli Clip- Translated

Here's my translation of the Israeli show... Not such great dialogue:

White T-Shirt: Very pretty....So you live here?

Dark Shirt: Yeah.

White Shirt: Cool.

Dark: You?

White: I don't live here yet. I have a place with a roommate. I just moved out of my parents' place three months ago.

Dark: Where are you from?

White: Petach Tikvah (a suburb of Tel Aviv) You?

Dark: Tel Aviv

White:Before there?

Dark: Tel Aviv

White: Oh. So you're from Tel Aviv. Nice.

Dark: Before there from Ashdod. (laughs)

White: Do I look pretty?

Dark: Say, is your sister supposed to come by?

White: Actually, I haven't spoken with her yet.... OK, so I'll talk with her and we'll make an appointment.

Dark: OK. So.... bye.(Awkward hand shake)

White: Are you cold? You're trembling.... Maybe you have a fever?

Dark: I don't think so. Do you think so?

White: It's possible you're a bit warm.

[kiss kiss kiss]

Hope that helps!

Michael Jensen's picture

Thanks for the translation! You're right. Not exactly

scintillating dialogue.
j U d E's picture

Got some right..

Thank you rjm1378! I did get some of the words (about Tel Aviv and 'do I look pretty') but I did not get the bit about why they were touching each other's forehead.

Here's a trailer for "Comme des Autres"

starring the lovely and recently (FINALLY!) "out" Lambert Wilson

Really ?

Lambert Wilson is out ? I had no idea, I mean I kinda suspected he was gay but like most of French actors he is very quiet on his private life, I didn't know he came out.

I also recently heard about 2 or 3 other French people (show presentators or actor or singers) who were out and I didn't know about it, Damn I know more about people in america than in my country ^^

Novinous, I did not know about Lambert Wilson either (about one or two presentators I do know)! David, really? Funny, Europe has "Verbotene Liebe", "Hollyoaks", "Les Bleus" and all the rest, but I must say I couldn't list one out gay European actor.. ehm.. *think*.. nope. A couple of singers (George Michael..), and John Barrowman of course, ah and Alan Cumming (he's out, right?). Oh ok more than one, 'cause there is also John Partridge on "Eastenders" and probably a few more I'm forgetting now. But not many more..

Anyway, David, about Jean-Marc Barr (love the actor! - he has played gay or in gay-related films repeatedly - "Les Infidèles", "Crustacés & Coquillages" etc.), I kind of suspected all along, but I can't remember him coming out. But if he has told you .. *lol*

I think he means that the actor finally plays a gay character, not really about his own sexual orientation. That why he put quotation marks in.

so I "have it on good authority."

Okay but then does it means he's not out ? 'cause if he isn't you probably shouldn't say anything, it might not be respectful.

Great Article - As per Usual

This article - much like all of those featured on AfterElton - was very entertaining and informative. Being from the younger gen. I couldn't imagine having a world without one-click access to gay culture. Even though I am privileged in that respect, I still appreciate AfterElton and similar websites for giving me access to positive representations of gay men. Thank you.
