Singling out the grand and gay in this year's Emmy nominations
The noms for the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards were announced this morning and there were plenty of gay faves given the nod, including a battle royale between two women who both gave magnificent performances this year. The category I was most looking forward to was Outstanding Lead Actress in a Television Movie or Mini-series, because the two greatest performances on TV this year were Sigourney Weaver in Prayers For Bobby and Drew Barrymore in Grey Gardens. Sure enough, both actresses were nominated, as were both films. Oh dear ... how to choose? The usual suspects got nominations: Neil Patrick Harris (who will also be hosting the show this year) for How I Met Your Mother, Vanessa Williams for Ugly Betty (but not lead America Ferrara), Sally Field in Brothers & Sisters (the lone acting nominee from that show), and Kathy Griffin's My Life on the D-List was nominated again (and the diva will be hosting the "Schmemmys" this year). I was thrilled to see Toni Collette get a nom for United States of Tara, but another debuting series was shockingly snubbed. No love for bloodsuckers? What the hell? The most buzzed-about new series last year, HBO's True Blood was completely shut out in all the major categories, as was the final season of Battlestar Galactica (meanwhile, the tired House and Lost did get the Drama Series Nominations). For a complete list of this year's nominees, visit the official Emmy site, and you can watch them pass out this year's awards on Sunday, September 20th at 8 PM ET on CBS. Emmy Nods
Lesser categories
Well, there's some fun in the lesser categories - Spongebob Squarepants competing against Phineas & Ferb (love them) in "Outstanding Special Class" whatever that is.
And at least BSG got nominated in some of the F/X categories, though the acting really deserved it.
Aussiello seems pumped about NPH's nomination this year, without Jeremy Piven being nominated.
Jim Parsons
Jim Parsons, as Sheldon Cooper for Outstanding Lead in a Comedy Series.
I know folks love NPH (and he is a wonder) but I am all about Jim this year.
Seriously. He is brilliant!
His performance is so nuanced that he somehow manages to make Sheldon so much more than just a smartypants, annoying, neurotic know it all.
Somehow, he creates this moments of warmth, depth, real vulnerability and charm in a character that really should just make you want to smack the shine off him all the time.
His comic timing is OFF THE CHAIN!
If he's not gay, could someone here at AfterElton take it upon themselves to woo him over?
Ed? Snicks? Anyone?
You can do it, I believe in you!

Agreement about Jim Parsons
Was very happy to see his name on the nomination list this year!! There are a lot of categories in which I'm torn, but not this one. GO JIM!!!!

Sheldon is asexual
First, let me agree with you - Big Bang Theory is the best comedy on television, and it's all about Jim Parsons as Sheldon. And I'm so over the TV critics complaining that BBT is outdated because it's a traditional three camera comedy instead of being filmed like The Office or 30 Rock. And I'm terribly amused since BBT was conceived as a vehicle for Kaley Cuoco and Palecki, and it turns out that Parsons is the breakout star.
But as much as I'm in love with Parsons, who in interviews seems disturbingly like Sheldon, our intepid editor tried getting the BBT people to cop to making Sheldon gay last year, since he really pings the ol' 'dar, but they were pretty adamant that making Sheldon gay would break the character - and I kind of agree. I just can't imagine Sheldon having sex. Maybe to create an offspring, but not for fun.
That said, given the chance, I'd try and turn Parsons in a heartbeat, if it weren't for the restraining order.
Sheldon creating offspring
Even creating offspring, I think Sheldon would do a more scientific way than actually having sex with someone...

Oh no. I didn't mean Sheldon, I was referring to JIM!!
I'm happy to have "Sheldon" be his lovely asexual self.
I was talking about Jim Parsons, the actor.
Who's working on recuriting his cuteness for the cause?
In interviews he just seems like he could go either way or both sooo why not the way of the mo?

Jim Parsons
I agree the Big Bang Theory is the only comedy on TV at the moment that I care to watch. It's great and Parsons as Sheldon is perfect. As much as I like NPH, my vote would go to Parsons... He is so underated.
And I find it hard to believe that Holly Hunter got nominated, that show is just awful, I couldn't watch more than 10 minutes of it... I usually give a show a chance but that show stinks.
NPH and Jim Parsons
They are in two different categories. NPH in supporting actor, and Jim Parsons in lead actor. Both of them winning would be great!

I find Jim Parsons incredibly HOT
There, I said it.
Jim Parsons
This show is IT! And anyone
Neil's year to win?
They had BETTER give him an Emmy!
House & Lost
It´ll be the time
Kathy better win or
Kathy
It's just that it'd be a
It's just that it'd be a first not only for a Emmy host to receive a nomination but also to win. And if Kathy wins both her nominations, it'll be a record that's pretty hard to beat (as very few people ever get nominated for two Emmys in the same year)!
Also, could you imagine the stunts she'd pull if it were to happen? The comedy gold she could mine? She could play the part of hostand winner at the same time, arguing with herself.
