Spencer Tracy Outed in New Katherine Hepburn Biography

katespencermed.jpgFilm historian William J. Mann has written a new biography of Katherine Hepburn. In it, he drops what seems like a major bombshell about Spencer Tracy.

According to Mann, the famed Hepburn/Tracy love affair was essentially manufactured by Hepburn and writer Garson Kanin after Tracy's death. The way Hepburn spun it, she and Spencer Tracy could never legally wed because he was a committed Catholic who would never divorce his wife, Louise Treadwell. The truth was, Tracy was more interested in men.

To support his allegation that Tracy was, at the least, bisexual, Mann's book includes an interview with a notorious Hollywood hustler identified as "Scotty". Scotty reveals that, back in the 1950's when Spencer Tracy was living in a bungalow on the estate of gay director George Cukor, the actor would often invite him over. katemed.jpg

"Tracy would always be drinking when I arrived. He`d get so loaded. He`d sit there at the table drinking from five o`clock in the afternoon until two in the morning, when he`d fall onto the bed and ask me to join him. ... And in the morning he`d act like nothing happened."

Frankly, I'm really surprised that Mann's reinterpretation of the Hepburn/Tracy relationship has received so little attention in the mainstream press. I mean, we always knew that androgynous Hepburn might have swung both ways, but Spencer Tracy?
