Is someone in this picture gay?

tampabay.jpg This picture is of the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning celebrating after their win of the Stanley Cup in 2004. I mention it because a reader tipped me off to a comment earlier this month by Lightning coach John Tortorella talking to TBO.com about his current team's upcoming road trip. Said Tortorella: "I think it's good we are getting out on the road for an extended period of time with the Xs and Os and all the teaching we have done and the time we have spent trying to teach our team concept. I think when you go on the road and are together with no wives, no babies, no girlfriends, no boyfriends or whatever it may be, you end up being together, and that's where your chemistry starts coming together in the locker room." Isn't that interesting? I've mulled over that statement several times trying to look at it different ways to see if the use of the word "boyfriend" could refer to someone other than one of the players. But I don't really think there is. You could surmise that Tortorella is referring to someone in the organization outside the players, but the way he refers to the chemistry in the locker room, it's hard to give that much credence. cavanaugh1.jpgIt's also possible he referred to one of the assistant coaches who could be a woman with a boyfriend. But a quick check of the Tampa Bay roster shows no female coaches. It's all guys. In fact, the only woman I could find listed on the hockey staff was Liz Sylvia, the team's Hockey Operations Executive Assistant. Sylvia's duties include maintaining player and coaches contracts as well as working with trades. Hmm, doesn't really sound much like she'd be part of that locker room chemistry now, does it? Perhaps Tortorella is simply a really progressive guy who always uses progressive language. Or perhaps Tampa Bay might be home to a real life Breakfast with Scot, the upcoming Tom Cavanugh movie about a gay hockey player. I'm going to get in touch with the team to see if they have any comment. Suddenly hockey just got a lot more interesting! (BTW, no doubt the team roster has changed since 2004 so not everyone in the photo is still with the team and new players have also joined. Try as I might, I couldn't find a current team photo!)
