Terry McMillan on James McGreevey

smadvocover.jpgSomething about The Advocate's October 11, 2006 cover made me queasy. On it, disgraced former NJ Governor Jim McGreevey is seen smiling, with his arm draped around his new boyfriend. Underneath, the caption reads, "Happy at Last." J

ust some advice for his new boyfriend-- keep Jimmy-boy away from those highway rest stops. McGreevey, in my mind, is a lousy choice to make the cover of the Advocate. There's something a bit creepy about the guy, and one has to wonder if the phrase "Happy at Last" would apply equally to his children and former wife.

Apparently, I'm not the only person who found this cover objectionable. Bestselling author Terry McMillan (Waiting to Exhale) wrote a scathing letter to The Advocate blasting McGreevey and the magazine for choosing to put him on its cover.

You may recall, McMillan was recently involved in a messy divorce-- she was devastated when it turned out her younger husband (in fact, her inspiration for How Stella Got Her Groove Back) was secretly on the "DL." You can find the full text of her letter here, but money quote:terry_mcmillan200.jpg

And now McGreevey has written a book describing his despicable behavior as if he had no other choice. It's total bullshit and seeing it on the cover of your magazine and for 10 minutes on Oprah made me want to throw up. He is promoting a book that will not help anyone who has and still lies to their girlfriends and wives. And to justify their behavior while committing adultery simply because they are using being gay as some sort of tax-shelter is hypocritical. He, like my ex-husband, have both pimped the gay community to applaud his bravery and to sympathize with them. But the truth is they are both liars who cheated on their wives while having promiscuous sex with men.

Amen to that, Terry.
