Shawn Pyfrom: Not So Comfortable with All the Gay Attention.

PyfromShawn.jpgThe straight actor who plays our favorite bisexual teenage sociopath, Andrew on Desperate Housewives is not altogether comfortable with his legions of gay fans.

According to TMZ.com, Sean Pyfrom recently made an appearance at the The Trevor Project's Cracked Xmas event, which benefits gay and questioning teens. When the 20-year old actor went onstage to introduce a musical performance by Lucy Lawless he became visibly uncomfortable with all the catcalls and cheers he got.

First off, who knew Xena could sing!? Maybe Pyfrom was just visibly uncomfortable with the vocal performance which was to ensue. If it wasn't Xena-phobia at work -- if Pyfrom was in fact uncomfortable with an appreciative gay audience-- well that's sort of a bummer, isn't it?

I wouldn't say his character on Desperate Housewives qualifies as a gay teen role model (Andrew's a bit of a heartless monster after all), but the role is nevertheless important since it breaks with stereotype. Andrew is a lot of things: scheming, calculating, cruel, but one thing he has never been is a victim. That's a refreshing take on a gay teen and we have Marc Cherry's writing and Shawn Pyfrom's performance to thank for it.

Desperate Housewives might be on a creative upswing this year, but one thing I really miss from last season was all the screen time given to Andrew. For me, the highlight of season 2 was when Andrew got revenge on Bree by seducing her hunky boyfriend. This season it's like the boy has been declawed, which is a real shame.

Note to Marc Cherry: Please, give us more of Andrew and far far less of boring Julie and Edie's nephew. Note to Shawn Pyfrom: Relax buddy, just because gay audiences like you doesn't mean anyone out there is making assumptions about your sexual orientation. You're straight. We get it.
