Alexis Arquette blasts Harris and Knight

alexis.jpgAlexis Arquette, the transgender member of the famous Arquette family which includes Patricia, star of Medium, and David, has spoken out against Neil Patrick Harris and T.R. Knight after the recent Cracked Xmas charity event for gay teens. Yes, this is the same event Dennis posted about yesterday where Shawn Pyfrom felt uncomfortable about being catcalled by a room full of gay men. Apparently, it was a busy night. Arquette is angry that Harris and Knight refused to talk about their personal lives. Both newly out stars appeared on stage and made brief comments, but neither addressed anything personal. Harris and Knight also refused to be photographed or interviewed by media covering the event. Harris reportedly even went so far as to immediately separate from his boyfriend David Burtka after arriving in the same vehicle. Burtka supposedly sneaked inside to avoid cameras. Why all the secrecy? It would almost seem as if they were going back in the closet. Harris, currently costarring in CBS's hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother, recently toldburtka_harris_1.jpg USA Today that his "highly paid public relations firm" had advised him to "lay low for awhile." What does that mean exactly, and did T.R. Knight get the same advice? And if so, why? The gay community has been extremely welcoming to both Harris and Knight, and there hasn't seemed to be much, if any, backlash from the mainstream, so why bother hiding something you've already been honest about? Maybe they're worried too much too soon could turn people off... kind of the Rosie O'Donnell syndrome. Perhaps this is in their best interest career-wise, but I have to agree with Alexis (and I never thought I'd be saying that). It does seem a little disingenuous to suddenly pretend you didn't just come out of the closet. Arquette, who has been extremely open and public about her transition from male to female, said, "People like that are weak. It's pathetic." By the way, Alexis' sister Patricia was a little more understanding. "It's never easy to come out. It's a very brave thing. I was terrified for Alexis, with all the cruelty in the world, that he would be taunted, teased or beaten."
