AfterElton's Man of the Year: CNN reporter Thomas Roberts Well, it's that time of year to acknowledge the best and worst of 2006 and we've done just that with the AfterElton Visibility Awards. Our choice for Man of the Year was an easy one: Thomas Roberts, the CNN reporter who came out earlier this year. Yes, there were bigger names who came out--Lance Bass, Neil Patrick Harris, and T. R. Knight. But it was Roberts who came out completely of his own free will and not because bloggers were harassing him or he was inadvertently outed by a co-worker. (Which isn't to take away from the others having come out; we also applaud them for their actions.)
Roberts came out because he believed it the right thing to do and because he wanted to be the one thing he never had as a young gay reporter--a role model. Roberts also had the courage to speak out against the priest who molested him as a child and then again this year when that priest received an unconscionably light sentence. For all of this we chose Roberts as our Man of the Year.

Thomas is so gorgeous and kind and talented, and probably because he came out, CNN demoted him and he will be off their network soon. Meanwhile, that drab closet case Cooper is still all over CNN.

Thomas Roberts has been on public record stating that the shuffling of his time period etc on CNN was not because he was gay but just a corporate decision and that in his business one can always expect it.
I found this on wikipedia:
On 15 September 2006, Christie Keith, a reporter with the website afterelton.org, published an interview with Roberts, who stated that he actually came out to coworkers in 1999, when he was living in Norfolk, Virginia. "I was happy, I was in a relationship, and I was very proud. I had the support of family, and of my friends. It was …¦ about not wasting any more time. I'd wasted enough time." He further commented, on the subject of coming out, "Hopefully, everyone, gay or straight, journalists or doctors or otherwise, can overcome that obstacle, because it stands in the way of you being the best you can be, with your job, with your family, with everything, and not have to be afraid anymore."[5]
Roberts also told Keith that he had been approached in 2005 by People magazine to be one of the publication's 50 Sexiest Bachelors, but he declined. "I'm not a bachelor. I thought it would be false advertising... [And] I didn't think it was the right venue to talk about it."[5]
Roberts has been in a relationship with his unnamed partner since at least 1999, according to the afterelton.com interview and celebrated their anniversary on 30 September.[5]
I don't see why Anderson Cooper doesn't come out as well. Everyone knows

I love Dave and Mary from Amazing Race, they were a real surprise for me since they came from the south and seemed SO traditional. Rosie had them on The View shortly after they were disqualified from the race and showed them a lot of love including getting them a house (they lived in a trailer — I believe). They were too stunned to speak! So sweet. Great Pick
Best Bisexual Character on Television: John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness.
Hell, yeah. Let's show him a little love!
The Best Use of Soapbox Award: Rosie O'Donnell
Interesting choice. She and Joy Behar are a great tag team match bringing gay issues to the table (literally during The View's Hot Topic segments). Almost daily they manage to make our issues real to middle America and consequently making gays more human after years of the fundamentalist declaring us inhuman freaks of nature.
Gay Life & Culture: A World History, edited by Robert Aldrich
Excellent choice and besides Jafe Fiennes is a doll, so what's not to love?
Joseph Fiennes brother actor Ralph Fiennes pronounces his first name as "Rafe" so in my house we affectionately refer to Joe as Jafe. Silly, I know.
Worst In Print: The Confession, by Jim McGreevey
Yeah, he's kinda McCreepy.
Favorite Gay Artist: Rufus Wainwright
Good artist deserves more love from "the gays' and recreating THE live performance of Judy Garland no less! Now that takes a man with guts.
And Finally, the Just Desserts Award goes to Ted Haggard, and the We Wish They Were Straight Award is a tie: Mark Foley and Jim McGreevey.

Daniel, you should read the AfterElton interview. It reveals his strong character in overcoming obstacles and living his life to the fullest. He also is a regular guy that happens to be gay. That's a rarity to see from an openly gay man.
