David Sedaris Reads the SantaLand Diaries

sedaris.jpgIf you have a friend who's been living under a rock for the past decade and thus is not already familiar with David Sedaris' work as a humorist, to my mind the audio book version of Holidays on Ice makes an excellent introduction to the author and a fantastic Christmas present. Sure, you can get the print version, but to truly appreciate Sedaris' particular brand of humor you have to hear his voice. With Sedaris, audiobooks are just always the way to go. As a sort of Christmas present to AfterElton readers, I wanted to find free audio clips out on the web of Sedaris reading his work. Alas, there's not as much out there as I'd hoped. One thing I did find was the original audio of his reading "SantaLand Diaries" for NPR's This American Life. You've probably already heard it a dozen times -- In it, Sedaris recounts his experiences as a Macys elf. Still, it is always a pleasure, and I wanted to share. Another piece found was "Six to Eight Black Men" where Sedaris canvases depictions of Santa Claus in other cultures. Hilarious. Finally, while not specifically on a Christmas theme, Sedaris made an appearance on The David Letterman Show recently and read a piece about a male catheter device called the "Stadium Pal." Check it out in the YouTube clip below.
