News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

300: Reservations Recommended

300 Poster Gerard Butler Ah ... they must be going to the Hawaiian Tropic Zone. Seriously, how ridiculous is this? Ridiculous enough for me to post it with only the tiniest bit of enjoyment (and thanks to UK mag Empire for posting this and several other stunning posters for the film). Although 300 (the much-anticipated film adaptation of Frank Miller's bloody graphic novel) has reportedly erased the Spartans' homo-friendly tendencies (whether erotic or no) from its script, it doesn't look like they've shied away from the male body worship in the least. It's interesting, though. A lot of Web chatter has been sparked by people who think that the film looks "gay" simply because it depicts muscular, shirtless men in every scene. The men aren't romantically involved or even touching, but the very fact of their barechestedness seems to set off gay alarms. Is it because the act of watching is still perceived as "masculine", and the act of simply watching a strapped hottie in a loincloth therefore a gay experience? Or is it something else? As one observant commenter on an IMDB thread put it:
It's not about the bare chests! Naked muscular guys in gyms or on beaches are not homoerotic at all. It's the cloak and shorts combination. It's like wearing a dinner jacket and bikini shorts without a shirt and pants.
And there you have it. Running into battle shirtless = masculine. Being able to pull off a fashion coup in the process = gay. (PS - that's Gerard Butler on the poster, better known as the Half-Masked-One in the atrocious film version of The Phantom of the Opera)

Frank Miller's graphic novel unfortunately has some less than gay-friendly
aspects. It will be "interesting" to see if those have been kept in the
film.

LOVE Gerry Butler!

He is a good actor.

If you are a fan like me check him out in the film "Dear Frankie" and the mini-series " The Jury"

More pics of GB please.

:)

Look on the bright side - at least good-looking muscular men get associated with gay men. Lesbians are considered so unattractive to be sexually of no interest to men. How do you spot a possible gay character on TV/film - he is good looking and well dressed; how do you spot a lesbian one, she is dowdy and opinionated (but not in a good, articulate way). Enjoy the body worshipping boys.

You need a new education...Spartans were NOT gay. It was unlawful and the fate of any who were caught practicing homosexuality was not pleasant. The Spartans were uncompromising about their laws.

And it is also more than annoying for me as a female to read posters say anything looks 'gay' just because there are men with their shirts off. That's just stupid.

I didn't say that the Spartans were gay -- I said that they had "homo-friendly tendencies", in that they encouraged close (not necessarily erotic, but emotionally close) relationships between male soldiers. There is some debate about whether erotic contact was actually punishable, but it's safe to say that it wasn't actively encouraged. And we can agree on the other point, at least!

This Wikipedia entry begs to differ. It only mentions Sparta, but does include them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality_in_ancient_Greece. BTW, no one is arguing they were gay as we know it. That concept is relatively new, but same-sex activity and relationships are as old as the rest of humanity.

There were gay Spartans. Unfortunately, straight historians ignore them or brush over that fact because they didn't act flamboyant. They equate flamboyancy with homosexuality and since gay Spartans weren't flamboyant they don't consider them gay. That's the box people have created for gays. That needs to be addressed in a serious manner. It's something that has been used against gay people in order to oppress them.

Homosexuality in ancient Greece was deleted on Wikipedia. Looks like Gina wasn't happy with that entry.

You need to use the link without the period at the end:

Anyway, more about 300 (the graphic novel) and its un-gay-friendliness
coming soon to a certain website near you, if everything goes to plan.

Gosh, Francois, what website might that be? LOL.

I'm trying to sell it to Fox News, but they're not biting.
I'll have to find something else.
