BBC America debuts gay-friendly series tonight

***WARNING: SOME SPOILERS*** Last year we did an article about Hollyoaks in the City, a nighttime soap opera making a big splash in the UK. Lucky for us, Hollyoaks lands on BBC America tonight, but under the shorter name In the City. Hmm, is it just me or does that sound an awfully lot like an old HBO show? For American audiences used to one or maybe two gay or bisexual characters on a program, Hollyoaks is a breath of fresh air. The soap features a bisexual man, an out, proud gay teen, another character just coming out, and a straight guy willing to do whatever it takes to get ahead. (Remember, we're talking a soap opera here.) Our article pointed out that not all of the characters are positive. Burton Philips (Lee Warburton) plays a smarmy bisexual which is another unfortunate addition to the pantheon of bisexual villains. But Hollyoaks has such a large number of gay characters it seems a little unfair to gripe too much. Adam (Philip Olivier) plays a schoolteacher (he's the one just coming out) who later on in the series begins a relationship with Josh (Oliver Lee), one of his students. Okay, that sounds a bit dodgy, but not having seen the show, I can't really comment. BTW, here is a clip of what I believe is the second time Josh and Adam kiss. Here are some pics of the actors. This is Oliver Lee who is actually four years older than the character he plays. ollie.jpg This is Philip Olivier who plays Adam holloaks3.jpg Clearly Philip is an actor who solely relies on his thespian talents. Actually, both of these pics are from his calendar which Philip proudly says we're mostly sold to gay men. Really? There's a shocker! Apparently all of the actors are straight, but very gay friendly. Here is one more of Philip. hollyoaks11.jpg And finally this is Adam-Jon Fiorentino who plays the straight model Troy. adam_jon_fiorentino.jpg In the City airs tonight at 10 PM on BBC America.
