Gideon Glick's Spring Awakening

gideonglick_lg.gifHere's a nice story: Broadway actor Gideon Glick (great name, right?), who stars in the recently-opened (and critically adored) musical Spring Awakening, came out recently in an interview with Oasis Magazine. Yeah, I know -- "since when is a musical theater actor's being gay a big deal?", right? But despite the possible perception that Broadway is the Gayest Place on Earth, there's still a heck of a lot of ducking and covering going on when it comes to gay actors going public with their sexuality. Yes, it's always a personal choice -- but the more "out" actors, the merrier. Hats off to Glick for his brave move, especially given that he made it right when his Broadway dreams are coming true. And the guy's just 18! That takes serious balls. Glick does share an on-stage kiss with another boy in the show (played by openly straight Jonathan B. Wright) -- 18, on Broadway, and getting paid to kiss cute guys? I think I picked the wrong career. Spring Awakening tells the story of the sexual coming-of-age of a group of students in the late 1800's. Based on the 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, Awakening's songs were written by pop musician Duncan Sheik. The music is fresh, gorgeous, and bursting with youthful energy -- perfect for a show about raging hormones and new experiences. You can check out a scene of the boys in the show singing the number "The Bitch of Living" over here. 1
