Black News Weekly: "Hardaway's anti-gay comments is how most Blacks feel about Faggots"

I hope it goes without saying that I believe Sinclere Lee is not speaking for most in the African-American community when he wrote this article about the Tim Hardaway controversy. Nonetheless, this issue does keep coming up. I wasn't even going to blog about this, but the article is showing up highly on Google, meaning a lot of folks are reading it. Here are few low highlights from the Lee piece.

Another thing that has turn Blacks against the gay community is that when you gays try to compare your perverted lifestyle with the social struggle of Blacks, it makes most socially conscious Black sick. You gays have chosen to be the way you are...¦ you were not born gay; no one is born gay. We were born Black in a racist country and we didn't make the choice in that matter.

So the Black community supports Tim Haraway and Isaiah Washington for keeping it real! And, their anti-gay remarks are just a reflection of how Blacks feel about the gays.

...¦the Black community is standing strong against gays and their lifestyle. It's freaky and nasty and the gays are the ones who brought AIDS to the world. Don't forget that!

It makes doubly thankful to Charles Barkley for speaking up so eloquently on the issue. What's really sad is how badly this sort of homophobia ends up hurting the African-American community by keeping gay men closeted and helping HIV to spread. The latest statistics show that even though African-Americans make up 13% of the population, they make up 49% of AIDS/HIV cases in America. Since the gay community doesn't seem able to reach Lee, here's hoping Barkley and others like him can.
